Book excerpt: Cattell (1965) and Spielberger (1966) proposed that there are two types of anxiety: state (fluctuating, temporary anxiety) and trait (stable, personality characteristic). The Yerkes-Dodson Law (1908) states that an individual’s performance can either be enhanced or impaired depending on the individual’s level of anxiety/arousal. Nideffer’s (1989) theory of Attentional and Interpersonal Style offers an explanation for the relationship between anxiety/arousal and performance, stating that the levels of anxiety/arousal effect an athlete’s willingness/ability to concentrate on task-relevant cues that aid performance. The purpose of this study was to determine if trait anxiety affects state anxiety and free throw performance of female collegiate basketball players. The revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) was used to measure the participants’ trait anxiety and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to measure the participants’ state anxiety in a pre-post design during two conditions (no pressure vs pressure). An ANOVA was used to test each hypothesis at the .05 level. Results demonstrated that trait anxiety had a significant effect on state anxiety with the level of state anxiety increasing as the level of trait anxiety increases. However, trait anxiety did not have a significant effect on performance. State anxiety had a significant effect on performance with performance decreasing as state anxiety increases. Condition also had a significant effect on performance with performance increasing in the second condition (pressure). These results indicate that individuals perform worse when they experience increasing levels of arousal and that pressure causes performance to increase.

These high-level academic and sport-related demands can create perfectionistic tendencies. Prior literature shows that perfectionistic concerns are positively related to athlete burnout while perfectionistic strivings are negatively related. For the prevention of athlete burnout, physical and psychological rest has been recommended. However, there is no previous study that explored the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest. Therefore, the present study aims to contribute to the existing literature in two ways. First, the relationship between perfectionism and athlete burnout in D-I collegiate athletes was explored. Second, the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest was explored in these athletes. A sample of 295 D-I, female, team sport athletes participated. Athletes completed online questionnaires comprised of the Competitive Orientations Scale (Sport MPS-2), The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ), and the Wakeful Resting Experiences Questionnaire. Four subsamples were identified from the scores on these measures: a pure evaluative concerns perfectionism group (n = 11), a mixed perfectionism group (n = 28), a non-perfectionism group (n = 23), and a pure personal standards perfectionism group (n = 18). Hypothesis 1 stated that burnout scores would be highest in the pure evaluative concerns perfectionism (ECP) group, second highest in the mixed perfectionism group, third highest in the non-perfectionism group, and lowest in the pure personal standards perfectionism (PSP) group. Hypothesis 2 stated that psychological resting experience scores would be highest in the pure PSP group, second highest in the non-perfectionism group, third highest in the mixed perfectionism group, and lowest in the pure ECP group. Two separate One-Way ANOVA tests were performed to test the hypotheses. Hypotheses were partially supported. The results showed that athletes with pure ECP and mixed perfectionism had significantly higher levels of athlete burnout compared to athletes with non-perfectionism and pure PSP. Moreover, athletes with non-perfectionism reported significantly greater recent engagement in psychological resting experiences compared to athletes with mixed perfectionism. This study contributes to the literature by furthering the research on perfectionism and burnout and being a pioneer in research on the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest. Keywords: division I, perfectionistic concerns, perfectionistic strivings, recovery, wakeful rest

Book excerpt: Five NAIA intercollegiate men's basketball teams and 53 players served as subjects to determine the role pre-game anxiety played in basketball game performance. The study involved four games in which Western Oregon State College competed against other small colleges in Oregon during the 19 -81 season. Performance in basketball was ascertained by field goal percentage, free throw percentage, turnovers per minute played and personal fouls per minute played. Twelve hypotheses were established to determine the effect played on basketball perfOrmance, the impact of playing time, and the effect of being a game starter or non-starter. A review of literature revealed little factual data to indicate that high levels of anxiety lead to poor performance in athletic competition. Spielberger (112) developed the State-Trait Anxiety inventory which assessed both state and trait anxietyRainer Martens' (65-72) work served as the guiding and directing source of information. Two inventories measuring trait and state anxiety were administered to the players one -half hour prior to the intercollegiate games. The relationship between the anxiety level of NAIA basketball players and their performance in games indicated no significant levels. Players who possessed high levels of pre-game anxiety were apparently able to dissipate it once the game began, not reflecting the anxiety in their performance. Turnovers per minute was the basketball performance indicator most consistently affected by anxiety, reaching significant levels in the following situations: 1. Players who participated over 20 minutes. 2. In the relationship between the length of time played, number of personal fouls and turnovers. 3. Game starters with anxiety represented by one test item and non-starters by seven test items. 4. All players with anxiety represented by five different test items. It was suggested that further study of anxiety involve NCAA programs, other sports, other physical environments, other age groups, women's programs, the effect of the anxiety level of coaches, and determining what level of anxiety is optimal for player success in intercollegiate basketball.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to determine the affect trait anxiety and attentional focus in basketball performance. Particular interest was centered on differences in trait anxiety and attentional focus between starting and non-starting Division Ibasketball players. Men's and women's basketball players from Eastern Washington University and Gonzaga University were selected for use in this study. Data collection for analysis involved only one test setting given approximately 6 weeks after the basketball season had begun. Martens (1977) sport competitive anxiety test (SCAT) was administered to assess trait anxiety. Bergandi, Shryock, & Titus (1990) basketball concentration survey (BCS) was used to measure attentional focus in the sampling population. Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, sub-scale inter- correlations, and a 2 X 8 Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). Significance (p .05) from the MANOVA determined that there were group differences in Trait Anxiety as measured by the Sport Competitive Anxiety Test (p= .038), and the attentional sub-scales RED (p= .028) and OIT (p= .04). The inter-correlation run between attentional focus and trait anxiety displayed many sub-scale relationships. Many direct and inverse relationships seem to indicate that the Basketball Concentration Survey is a valid assessment tool"--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the world’s leading perfectionism researchers and theorists to present their latest findings and ideas on how and why perfectionism may confer risks or benefits for health and well-being, as well as the contexts which may shape these relationships. In addition to providing an overview of the latest research in this field, this volume explores new conceptual models that may help further our understanding of when, how, and why perfectionism may be implicated in health and well-being. After presenting an overview of the conceptual and measurement issues surrounding the concepts of perfectionism, health, and well-being, three sections address the implications of perfectionism for health and well-being. The first of these sections provides an overview of research and theory on the role of perfectionism in health and illness, health behaviors, and chronic illness. The next section of the book focuses on the cognitive and affective underpinnings of perfectionism as they relate to psychopathology, distress, and well-being, including how it applies to eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. The final section of the book explores specific contexts and how they may contour the associations of perfectionism with health and well-being, such as in the domains of interpersonal relationships, academic pursuits, and work-related settings. Perfectionism and wellbeing is a topic not just for researchers and scholars, but clinicians and practitioners as well. For this reason, chapters also include a discussion of prevention and treatment issues surrounding perfectionism where relevant. By doing so, this volume is an important resource for not only researchers, but also for those who may wish to use it in applied and clinical settings. By presenting the latest theory and research on perfectionism, health, and well-being with a translational focus, Perfectionism, Health, and Well-Being makes a unique and significant contribution to perfectionism as well as general wellness literature, and highlights the need to address the burden of perfectionism for health and well-being. .

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to assess the anxiety levels of women at Springfield College who were participating in intercollegiate basketball. The problem was concerned with anxiety as measured by the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and its influence on performance. (45) The first sub-problem was to ascertain whether there were any changes in pre-game and post-game state anxiety levels. The second sub-problem was to determine whether there were any differences in the state anxiety scores obtained from the three games designated "highly anxious" as compared to the three games that are "low anxious” in nature. The third sub-problem was concerned with whether there were any changes from the initial trait anxiety level, obtained on the X-2 form of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), prior to the season, to those trait anxiety scores obtained on the STAI at the season's end. The following stressful or anxiety producing situations involving basketball performance are listed below in the order of the intensity of the performance: 1. The Regional Championship Tournament, with testing pre- and post-performance for state anxiety levels. 2. All regularly scheduled games, with testing of state anxiety prior to and after competitive performance.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The investigation was designed to determine if a relationship exists between competitive state anxiety and performance of high school basketball players. Participants from three independent high schools in New England (N = 42) were assessed during two time periods: immediately prior to competition and immediately following competition. The participants were administered the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2; Martens, Vealy, C Burton, 1990). Performance was measured using game versus season shooting percentages. No significant (p> .05) linear relationships were found between precompetitive state anxiety and athletic performance using a Pearson Product Moment-Correlation Coefficient; however, a significant (p
