Teens throughout the US are more likely to experience a major depressive disorder when compared to adults (10.4% vs. 9.4%)(Kessler et al., 2010). Latinos may me at higher risk of mental health problems due to additional stressors such as low socioeconomic status (SES), limited access to services, and cultural stigma towards mental health services (Rossello, & Bernal, 1999). Latinos who have a high rate of acculturation are at greater risk of developing depressive symptoms. This may be due to highly acculturated families having less of an emphasis on familismo which is a cultural value focusing on respecting and helping others in the family (Padilla et al., 2011). American born Latino teens may have a higher rate of acculturation than their parents which has been shown to be related to increased family conflict and lower family support (Chun, & Akutsu, 2003). This dynamic puts Latino teens at an increased risk of developing depressive symptoms (Chun, & Akutsu, 2003; Santisteban, & Mitrani, 2003). This study examined data from 43 Latina teens in 11th and 12th grade to determine the relationship between level of acculturation and diagnosis of a major depressive episode, minor depression, and current symptoms of depression. There were no significant relationships found between acculturation, depressive symptoms, and current and past depression diagnoses. Over half of the sample (58.2%) reported a depression diagnosis at baseline and almost one third (27.9%) reported a depression diagnosis at follow-up indicating that a high number of Latina teens were experiencing depression at the clinical level. Thus, suggesting that participants in the sample would benefit from culturally competent services to address their mental health needs. The limited significant findings in this study may be due to the small sample size and the low acculturation level of the participants. Future research needs to be done with a large and more diverse sample in terms of acculturation levels in order for findings to be generalizable to other Latina teens.

Book excerpt: "Family conflict, particularly acculturation conflict, has been identified as a significant risk factor for immigrant youth, increasing the likelihood of depression, lower self-esteem, conduct problems, and poor academic performance in Latino and Asian American adolescents and young adults (e.g., Bahrassa, Syed, Su, & Lee, 2011; Dennis, Basañez, & Farahmand, 2010; Formoso, Gonzales, & Aiken, 2000; Gonzales, Deardorff, Formoso, Barr, & Barrera, 2006; Juang, Syed, & Takagi, 2007). Despite this, there is limited empirical work that addresses the mechanisms by which acculturation conflict impacts psychological well-being in Latino youth. The goal of this dissertation was to examine the mechanisms that underlie the negative effects of acculturation conflict with parents, on an adolescent's depressive symptoms and self-esteem. In this current study, participants included 140 Latino adolescents (Mage = 12.88; SD = .70; 51% girls). The majority of youth were from Mexican-origin families (81%). Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), results indicated that parent-adolescent acculturation conflict predicted greater depressive symptoms, lower self-esteem, lower relationship satisfaction with mothers and fathers, and a lower ethnic private regard. Additionally, ethnic private regard served as a partial mediating mechanism linking acculturation conflict to self-esteem, such that, acculturation conflict predicted a lower ethnic private regard, which in turn, predicted lower self-esteem. Book excerpt: Given the equivocal results on the role that acculturation plays in the depressive symptoms among children and adolescents, and the limited research on Mexican American youth in general, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of parent's acculturation and their children's depressive symptoms among Mexican-American of low socio-economic status. This study followed Rodriguez's (2007) methodological recommendations to use a strong methodological design, and use an orthogonal acculturation measurement. The study selected a stratified random sample of 198 students, selecting equal numbers of males and females, and equal subjects from grades 3rd through 5th. Subjects were selected from three elementary schools located in a low socio-economic school district in the Southwestern United States. Parents of the selected students were asked to complete a demographic form, the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (Cuellar, Arnold, and Maldonado, 1995), and the Internalizing subscales of the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18 (CBCL/6-18; Achenbach and Rescorla, 2001). The study found no significant relationship between parent's acculturation and children's depressive symptoms. The study was limited by high attrition among the sample, a frequent characteristic of low socio-economic populations.

Current research suggests that psychosocial factors such as health locus of control (HLOC) or Acculturation are related to physical health prevention and health promotion behaviors. However, no studies to date have examined whether these factors play a role in youth' and parents' participation (that is, Engagement) in youth mental health services. The current proposal aims to elucidate the relationships between HLOC, Acculturation, and Engagement in youth mental health treatment for a Latino parent (n = 80) and a Latino youth (n = 77) sample, taken from the NIMH-funded TWIST study. Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to examine associations between Acculturation and HLOC, and regression analyses were conducted to examine whether Acculturation and HLOC predict Engagement in youth mental health treatment. Consistent with existing theories, results show a significantly positive correlation between youth American Cultural Affinity (ACA) and Internal HLOC, and a significantly negative correlation between parental ACA and Internal HLOC. Contrary to our hypotheses, Acculturation and HLOC did not predict Engagement in either adult or youth sample. Given the limited sample size, this study should be viewed as utilizing a pilot sample of the larger TWIST investigation. As such, projections of sample sizes needed to detect effects are considered and discussed. The current study marks the initiation of a program of research with the long-term objective of examining the relationship between Acculturation, HLOC, Engagement, and outcomes for African American, Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, and non-Hispanic White youth.

Book excerpt: The number of children experiencing behavior problems within the schools is increasing at alarming rates. Although research has contributed significantly to further understanding the development of conduct or behavioral problems, it has been somewhat limited in its investigation of culture related factors pertaining to Latino students. It has been suggested that the processes of acculturation may contribute to the development of behavior problems among Latino youth. This link is most often attributed to discrepancies in parent-child acculturation levels that result when children acculturate at a faster rate than their parents, leading to increased family conflict, parent-child alienation, and youth maladjustment. The purpose of the current study was to extend this research by examining the link between both acculturation and enculturation to problem behavior and testing specific family processes as mediators in a sample of 199 Latino youth and their families. The results supported a mediational model and indicated that family supervision, but not family conflict, played a significant mediational role in children's problem behavior. In addition, while acculturation was not related to any of the cultural or behavioral variables, findings support the potential protective function of child enculturation on the development of problem behavior. The implications of these findings are discussed, as well as limitations of the study and directions for future research.
