Book excerpt: Being successful in math is considered to be important for future employability, and music may be an important venue for students to improve their math skills. Rather than being unrelated, strong musical education programs have been linked to higher performance in math and academics in general. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine whether a statistically significant relationship exists between students’ attitudes toward math and their attitudes toward music with regard to gender. A convenience sample of 107 eighth grade students from a metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia school district participated in two surveys: Tapia’s Attitude Toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) and Shaw and Tomcala’s Music Attitudes Inventory (MAI). Pearson correlations were utilized to test three null hypotheses to describe students’ attitudes toward math and music with regard to gender. No statistically significant relationship was found between students’ attitudes towards math and music. It was concluded that further research is needed to expand the sample to include sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students instead of just eighth grade students.

Book excerpt: This revision of an important and path-breaking work holds to its central argument that troubled young people can develop self-worth, significance, dignity, and responsibility only through commitment to the positive values of helping and caring for others. An enlarged and revised edition of the authors' pioneering work on building positive youth culture, Positive Peer Culture retains the practical orientation that made the original attractive to teachers and youth workers, while adding new material on positive peer culture (PPC) in schools and community settings, research on PPC, and guidelines for maintaining program effectiveness and quality. Concepts of positive peer culture have been applied in a wide variety of educational and treatment settings including public and alternative schools, group homes, and residential centers. Vorrath and Brendtro describe specific procedures for getting youth "hooked on helping" through peer counseling groups, and for generalizing caring behavior beyond the school or treatment environment through community-based service learning projects. The authors contend that the young people who populate our nation's schools are in desperate need of an antidote to the narcissism, malaise and antisocial life-styles that have become so prevalent, and that this book seeks to provide a way of meeting their increasing cry to be used in some demanding cause. On publication of the first edition, Richard P. Barth, Frank A. Daniels Professor for Human Services Information Policy, School of Social Work, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill called Positive Peer Culture "a significant contribution to the field."

Book excerpt: During its first 14 years of existence, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) was located at the Education Commission of the States (ECS). This annotated bibliography of 575 references lists all major publications by or about NAEP published between 1969 and 1983. References are in a classified arrangement, by specific or special assessment. Documents not dealing with a specific assessment are grouped by: Methodological Publications; Special Analyses; and General and Miscellaneous. Materials by NAEP are separated from materials about NAEP done by external organizations. Subject, Personal Author, and Preparing Institution indexes are provided. The compilation is based on materials (documents and journal articles) archived in the database of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), and therefore most documents cited can be obtained through the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS). Book excerpt: Educators across the United States have searched for avenues to improve students' mathematics achievement since the publication of A Nation at Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983) which reported that American students were behind students in other countries academically. Recent legislation, No Child Left Behind (2001), continues to address the need for improvement in mathematics among K-12 students. A possible intervention in middle school is to incorporate parental involvement. Numerous researchers (Colombo, 2006; Desimone, 1999; Epstein, 2008; Flynn, 2006; Henderson & Berla, 1994; Sheldon & Epstein, 2005; Wherry, 2006) have demonstrated the positive outcomes of parental involvement on children's education. This construct was investigated by analyzing the effects of math workshops for parents of eighth grade students on student math achievement and anxiety levels. Two theories form the foundation for the study: (a) Epstein's (1987) Theory of Overlapping Spheres which describes the behavioral practices of parental involvement and (b) Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler's (1995, 1997) Model of Parental Involvement, which is based on psychosocial constructs that affect the relationship between parental involvement and students' successes. A Nonequivalent Control-Group design and a Static-Group Comparison Design were used in the study with a sample of 105 eighth grade math students and their parents. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted for hypothesis one and a Two-Sample t-test was employed for hypothesis two. These statistical measures revealed no significant difference between eighth grade students' math achievement and math anxiety levels for students whose parents attended math workshops, and those students whose parents did not attend math workshops.
