Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Job satisfaction is important to consider when developing strategies for recruitment and retention. The Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) conducted in 2014 was the first nationally representative assessment of the state public health workforce. Prior to this assessment, the job satisfaction of state agency public health workers and preceptor capacity had not been measured. This study fills the current research gaps by studying the job satisfaction among the applied epidemiology workforce, identifying factors influencing job satisfaction, and the describing the preceptorship capacity among epidemiologists. This research is based on the 2014 PH WINS data. The analysis was limited to those who identified epidemiologist as their role within the agency (n=681), and for this sub-sample, new statistical weights were developed and used, to generate national estimates for the applied epidemiology workforce. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and logistic regression were performed. Comments about job satisfaction were thematically analyzed. The study findings indicate state epidemiologists have a high level of job satisfaction. Sources of job satisfaction include commitment to public health, meaningfulness of work, and task diversity. Other factors significantly associated with higher job satisfaction scores include: supervisory level, intention to depart the workforce, being a preceptor, training support, organizational support, supervisor support, overall organization satisfaction, and overall pay satisfaction (p=

Book excerpt: The reason for conducting this research project was the increasing rate of nurse turnover and job dissatisfaction at the staff nurse level. Today's professional nurse is overworked and over burdened with exceptionally difficult patient caseloads. Self esteem and self worth become low when job dissatisfaction is high. The goal of nursing administrators and nurse educators should be focused on retaining staff nurses and providing for high worker satisfaction. The purpose of this research study was to determine if participating in a student nurse preceptorship program increased the level of job satisfaction- experienced by the staff nurse. The Employee Assessment Tool is a thirty-five item quality of work analysis tool used to determine the importance of work factors and their relationship to job satisfaction. The tool was distributed to thirty nurses who were presently preceptors for student nurses, and thirty nurses who were not preceptors for students, and one hundred percent of the nurses responded and returned the questionnaire to this researcher. The hypothesis stated that nurses who work as student nurse preceptors have an enhanced sense of job satisfaction over nurses wh6 do not work as student nurses preceptors. This hypothesis was not found to be supported from the research data collected. A T-test was used to statistically analyze the data. Limitations of the study such as controlling for the number of times a nurse had worked as a preceptor, and that only one college program and hospital were used, may have lead to the unsupported results obtained. Recommendations for future research include using a larger sample population with greater control over how many times the nurse was a preceptor. More intensive research is needed in order to improve staff nurse retention and to increase the quality of the job satisfaction felt by the staff nurse.

Book excerpt: Dr. Poncelet and Dr. Hirsh eagerly developed an encyclopedic chapter for the 4th edition of the Guidebook for Clerkship Directors, and it seemed logical and proper to grow that chapter, which had been truncated for the Guidebook, into this book. They have assembled the leading international experts in the field of the medical school longitudinal integrated curriculum, who in turn have generated what we are sure will be considered the ultimate resource for these experiences. This book fills a significant void in the medical education literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changes in healthcare reform coupled with the rapidly growing aging population have increased the need for patients to transition from acute care to long-term care (LTC) are escalating. The ability of healthcare systems and organizations to retain nurses has become more and more difficult for a number of reasons. For the nurse practicing in LTC, the factors associated with decreased retention and increased turnover range from hours, salary, staffing challenges/shortages, providing care to patients with a higher level of acuity, insufficient onboarding, and poor job satisfaction. The purpose of this project is to develop and implement an evidence-based nurse preceptor program within a LTC facility to increase job satisfaction of all nurses and to increase retention of newly hired nurses who were onboarded by a preceptor. The components of the nurse preceptor program included establishing criteria for selecting nurse preceptors, created a preceptor leadership training, and requiring that newly hired nurses receive a minimum of five days of job specific orientation with a nurse preceptor. The training consisted of developing leadership qualities, communication principles, and onboarding techniques. Six nurses were selected to attend the preceptor leadership training. The study found an increase in nurse job satisfaction and retention following implementation of a nurse preceptor program within a LTC facility. The project results will add to the limited research on the effectiveness and benefits of a nurse preceptor program implemented within LTC. (Author Summary)
