Book excerpt: Career decision-making is examined as it relates to anxiety, worry, and personality correlates in an undergraduate population. Participants included 139 males and 199 females enrolled in a public university in a semirural Midwestern community. The majority of participants were Caucasian (73%), with an average age of 21 years. The students voluntarily completed survey packets containing questions about career decidedness, level of anxiety, level of worry, personality, major certainty, and vocational identity. The survey packet consisted of the Career Decision Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Penn State Worry Questionnaire, Big Five Personality Inventory, and a demographic questionnaire. Contrary to suggestions made by theoretical models that a curvilinear relationship exists between career indecision and level of anxiety, results of this study suggest that career indecision is positively related to level of anxiety. A significant positive relation was also found between career indecision and worry. Additionally, significant negative relations were found between career indecision and agreeableness and career indecision and conscientiousness. Gender differences were found on several of the variables with females reporting more certainty, more worry, more agreeableness, higher neuroticism, and higher career satisfaction than males. Moreover, seniors were found to be more certain in their careers and more conscientious than freshman students. In summary, the findings appear to contradict theoretical models of career decision-making and level of anxiety but also corroborate previous empirical research in career decision-making. These results suggest that many factors should be considered when assessing individuals seeking assistance with career decision-making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Career indecision is a stage most individuals pass through during their lifetime, but it is often accompanied by anxiety. While anxiety can have a positive influence on decision making by focusing attention and cognitive resources, excess anxiety can disrupt the career decision-making process. Existing literature links anxiety to cognitive flexibility, an individual's ability to efficiently switch between thoughts and ideas and adapt to evolving situations, with young adults higher in cognitive flexibility typically experiencing less anxiety than their less flexible peers. However, no studies to date have examined cognitive flexibility as it relates to career indecision or career-indecision-related anxiety. This study examines the relationships between cognitive flexibility, career indecision, and anxiety in undergraduate students. 156 undergraduate students (72% female, 91% Caucasian, 63% juniors and seniors) completed an online Qualtrics survey assessing career indecision, career anxiety, cognitive flexibility, and general demographic information including academic trajectory, career confidence, and personal characteristics. The previously documented relationship between career indecision and anxiety was supported, but the discovery that both career indecision and anxiety share significant relationships with cognitive flexibility augments prior research by examining cognitive flexibility in the context of career decision-making. While cognitive flexibility did relate to both career-indecision-related anxiety and career indecision, it did not directly mediate the relationship between these two variables, and once its relationship with career indecision was partialled, it no longer significantly correlated with career-indecision-related anxiety. This suggests cognitive flexibility could serve as a mechanism to promote career decision-making, thereby reducing career-indecision-related anxiety"--Leaf 2.

The many discussions and exercises enable readers to explore their own career issues in order to learn practical approaches to career planning. The authors cover basic career concepts and decision making; social conditions affecting career development such as the global economy and organizational culture; and practical information on implementing a strategic career plan. Many books in this area provide an extensive survey of various theoretical approaches to career planning/development. However, this text constitutes a systematically designed course based on the cognitive information processing model of career problem solving and decision making. This model provides a practical and realistic vehicle to inform students about career planning and management interventions and to accommodate students at different levels of decidedness about their career aspirations.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics, and career thought processes among college students with disabilities based on Antonovsky's conceptual framework of sense of coherence. Participants were college students with disabilities collected through the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (rcpd) at Michigan State University and other universities and colleges via a listserv of the Michigan Association on Higher Education and Disabilities (mi-ahead). Pearson Correlation Coefficient and forward stepwise regression analyses were carried out in order to find out the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics (E.G., gender, race, and socioeconomic status), and career thought processes. Results supported that college students with disabilities who showed higher sense of coherence indicated less overall dysfunctional career thoughts, career decision-making confusion, or career-related anxiety. In addition, the relationships between sense of coherence, career thoughts, and the demographic characteristics have been found. Implications for career development professionals as well as clinical considerations of caring for college students with disabilities experiencing career-related difficulties were discussed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of college freshmen experience career indecision (Orndorff & Herr, 1996), which is related to anxiety (Campagna & Curtis, 2007). Little recent research has been conducted assessing the effect of computer-assisted career guidance systems (CACGS) on career decision-making and related state anxiety. This study assessed the effect of DISCOVER, a well-used CACGS on college campuses, on the career decision-making and anxiety of 66 university students. Half of the participants were randomized to the DISCOVER program, and the remaining half did not receive any intervention. The effect of DISCOVER was measured comparing wait-list controls' and experimental groups' pretest and posttest scores on the Career Decision Scale (CDS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Analyses of covariance were conducted to examine the impact of the intervention on posttest CDS and STAI scores for the two groups. Small effects were detected in some of the analyses suggesting efficacy of the DISCOVER program.
