Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to provide insight into the relationship of Advanced Placement (AP) participation on closing the achievement gap between African American students and other ethnic/racial groups (White, Hispanic, and Asian) in a large urban school district in a southern state. Two major issues were considered: (a) the impact of high school student Advanced Placement participation on SAT Reasoning Test scores and (b) the correlation between increased high school student Advanced Placement participation and closing the academic achievement gap between African American and other ethnic/racial groups. A significant difference was found to exist in the mean SAT Reasoning Test scores among different ethnic/racial groups during the 2010-2011 school year. African American student mean scores were significantly lower on the SAT Reasoning Test when compared to all ethnic/racial groups identified in this study, regardless of the independent variable (no AP participation, one AP course, two or more AP courses). However, the results did indicate that African American participation in AP courses was significantly lower than all other ethnic/racial groups in this school district. Additionally, information was provided for school leaders regarding the development of a systematic approach to creating equity and access for African American students to fully engage in a college going culture through participation in Advanced Placement courses.

Book excerpt: This report shows college enrollment and graduation trends among African American SATʼ takers who finished high school in 2004 and 2010 by various student characteristics, including aspirations, self-perceived ability, and academic achievements. In every case, students in the top categories were the most likely to enroll in four-year colleges within one year after graduating from high school in 2004 and in 2010. Students in these top categories among the 2004 cohort were also more likely to graduate from a four-year college six years later. Also, African American females and students whose parents went to college tended to be more likely to enroll and graduate from college, although we did see increases in the proportion of males participating in the SAT as well as increases in examinees whose parents had a college degree. Additionally, we found an increase in SAT participation, Advanced Placement Programʼ (APʼ) participation, two-year college enrollment, and an increase in SAT takers with high aspirations and self-perceived ability. These positive trends, combined with the finding that relationships between student characteristics and college enrollment in 2010 were often quite similar to the relationships seen in 2004, suggest that an increased number of African American students may graduate with college degrees in the coming years.

In most subjects, the majority of twelfth-grade Black students do not have even a "partial mastery" of the skills and knowledge that the authoritative National Assessment of Educational Progress calls "fundamental for proficient work" at their grade. No Excuses marshals facts to examine the depth of the problem, the inadequacy of conventional explanations, and the limited impact of Title I, Head Start, and other familiar reforms. Its message, however, is one of hope: Scattered across the country are excellent schools getting terrific results with high-needs kids. Data analysis indicated that the majority of students viewed teacher, principal, and guidance counselor support as key factors in their success in AP classes. The four areas perceived by the most participants as having had significantly affected enrollment and subsequent success in AP courses included: (1) adults making students feel welcome, (2) positive relationships with adults in the building, (3) tutoring, and (4) holding African American AP students as an example to other African American students.

The achievement gap between African-American and Caucasian students appears in not only scores, but also in other academic areas, such as attendance rates, graduation rates, special and gifted education placements, percentages of students in college preparatory or advanced placement classes, numbers of students in extracurricular activities, honor roll nominations, and grade-point-averages (Kober, 2001; Ogbu, 2002). The purpose of this study is to examine the difference in academic emphasis between high performing and low performing African-Americans in predominately white suburban schools by examining the relationship between academic emphasis and the achievement of African-American students. More specifically, examine the relationship between academic emphasis and the achievement of African-American children in predominately white suburban schools by observing the opinions of parents. The study is designed to indicate the importance of School, Family, Children, and Student Peer Academic Emphasis for African-American children in predominately white suburban schools based on parents' perceptions. Participants in this study were black parents of 221 African-American students attending predominately white suburban schools. Parents' opinions were collected during the third quarter of the academic school year 2007- 08 using a self-constructed questionnaire. Results reflected that after controlling for significant demographic variables, School Academic Emphasis was not related to grade point average; however, Family, Children, and Student Peer Academic Emphasis, as well as, characteristics of academic emphasis remained to have significant relationships to student achievement.

AP has expanded dramatically in recent years, and with noted program benefits accruing to successful participants, the issue of equity has become a concern. When identified early, students who have potential to be successful in AP courses could obtain the preparation necessary to excel academically in courses that have an impact on college admissions and outcomes. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if a relationship exists between 6th grade CogAT composite, verbal, and quantitative battery scores and 12th grade AP English Literature and 12th grade AP Calculus exam pass-fail scores. The setting for the study was a rural northeast Georgia school district. Utilizing archived data, a special kind of Pearson correlation, a point biserial correlation, and a logistics regression analysis were conducted. All null hypotheses were rejected indicating that a statistically significant positive relationship exists between 6th grade CogAT composite, verbal, and quantitative battery scores and 12th grade AP English Literature and 12th grade AP Calculus exam scores. Moreover, the relationship is a predictive one. Based on study results, more informed curriculum decisions could be made for students beginning in the middle school years. Recommendations for further study include consideration of additional variables that might influence AP exam success such as gender, socioeconomic factors, giftedness, and motivation.
