Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of the Civil Government to Christian Missions: The Ramsden Sermon for 1902 Preached Before the University of Cambridge on Whit Sunday May 18, 1902 No building in China is so hated as the great fort like cathedral at Canton. An intelligent Chinese said: We Chinese say that cathedral must come down even if it need be One hundred years hence. On the other hand the British Government has issued a circular to English missionaries pointing out that Chinese prejudice and superstition must be more carefully considered in the forms and heights of the buildings erected. In the face of such a policy the question of the relation of the English Government to English missionaries in China is full of difficulty. Book Synopsis Anarchy and Christianity by : Jacques Ellul
Download or read book Anarchy and Christianity written by Jacques Ellul and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacque Ellul blends politics, theology, history, and exposition in this analysis of the relationship between political anarchy and biblical faith. While he clarifies the views of each and how they can be related, his aim is not to proselytize either anarchists into Christianity or Christians into anarchy. On the one hand, suggests Ellul, anarchists need to understand that much of their criticism of Christianity applies only to the form of religion that developed, not to biblical faith. Christians, on the other hand, need to look at the biblical texts and not reject anarchy as a political option, for it seems closest to biblical thinking. After charting the background of his own interest in the subject, Ellul defines what he means by anarchy: the nonviolent repudiation of authority. He goes on to look at the Bible as the source of anarchy (in the sense of nondomination, not disorder), working through Old Testament history, Jesus' ministry, and finally the early church's view of power as reflected in the New Testament writings.
Book Synopsis Christians and Civil Government by : J. Peter Hill
Download or read book Christians and Civil Government written by J. Peter Hill and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil government is what we often call the state, which shares characteristics with other institutions. But unlike any other institution, the state can encourage or compel people to do certain things. It sometimes has the legitimate authority to deprive us of life, liberty, and property. The Bible tells us that it and our human governors are ordained by God. The key question this book asks is, “What has God taught us about the state?” The author also explores other questions, such as: Have we uncritically accepted ideas about civil government from our culture? Is our political identity adequately characterized as “conservative” or “progressive”—or should there be something more? What does the Old Testament teach us about civil government? What can we learn from Jesus’s relationship with the political powers of his day? This book also highlights the apostles’ interaction with local and Roman authorities and how the doctrinal statements of thoughtful Christians of the past should inform our views of civil government. Challenge political assumptions and ground your thinking in ways to honor God with the wisdom in Christians and Civil Government.
