This title, which it has acquired for itself the world over, implies that it is unique as compared with all other books. It is the book in a preeminent sense. The first construction that might be put upon this title is, that it is the book containing the record of a religion, the Christian re ligion. AS the Vedas contain the religion of the East, or the Koran the religion of Mohammad, so the Bible is the authority for the religion of Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1891, Vol. 38 To say that we opened the book with many misgivings, is to say but little. We had conceived a decided prejudice against the writer. We had gotten the impression that he was a cold and heartless rationalist. A chilly fear stole over os lest we might be doing worse than wasting the time devoted to him. There was reason for this, for as he tells us himself, hints had been thrown out that he was bordering on atheism. One critic had gone so far as to ask him, what would be the title of the book in which he would advocate the doing away with Christ ianity? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1887, Vol. 34 IT has been thought proper to insert the following addresses in this review, because Dr. Nevin was its first editor. The review was called into existence in the early days of the history of our institutions at Mercersburg. The founding of the first college and seminary was an event of great significance for the Reformed Church. It naturally called forth a great deal of interest throughout the church. These institutions were to be come both the centre and exponent of her life and spirit. It soon began to appear that the church had a life as well as a history of its own which could not be a mere copy of any other church. It was necessary not only to develop a theology that should fitly represent the historical life and faith of the church in whose interest especially these institutions were founded, but also a system of thought or philosophy that would mould the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1890, Vol. 37 IN entering upon the science of Ethics, which we may define in most general terms the science of the Good, we pro pose as an Introduction a consideration of humanity, viewed as general and individual. As man is the subject concerned in this science, particularly in reference to his ethical nature, it is highly important, as throwing light upon the whole theme, to have a right conception of what he is in his relation both to the world of nature below him and to the spiritual world above him, to both which he is organically joined, both in his generic and individual life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1884, Vol. 31 After referring to the marked reticence of the New Testament in reference to little children, and quoting an important passage bearing upon the question of their salvation (mark 10 13 the article proceeds to give a succinct historical review of the doctrine held by Augustine and the Roman Church, by the Reformers, but especially by the Calvinistic theologians of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Augustine connected salvation mechanically with the sacrament of baptism, and drew the inference that unbaptized infants were lost, though their punishment was of the mildest sort, -the loss of heaven rather than the torment of hell. The doctrine of Augustine became the doctrine of the Roman Catholic church, and has reigned in that communion, without essential modification, to the present time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Presbyterian and Reformed Review, 1892, Vol. 3 HE rapid growth Of the Ritschl school Of theology in Ger many during the last twenty years is a phenomenon which, whatever may be one's estimate Of the theology itself, is deserving Of careful attention. Though it may not yet have produced any marked impression in our own country, past experience shows that it cannot in the long run fail to find zealous representatives and advocates among us. It is well, therefore, to inquire what its merits and defects are. If our judgment is on the whole unfavor. Able, it will have to be in spite Of the most extravagant claims of the adherents Of the Go'ttingen theologian. They have inherited from him, as we may say, an arrogant assumption, a 'claim to little short Of infallibility for themselves, accompanied by an almost contemptuous condemnation Of all Opinions dissonant from theirs. While such a tone naturally provokes Opponents to vigor, or even bitterness, in their Opposition, we shall seek to exercise a dispassion ate judgment in the examination which we now undertake. Sees ask Christ whether it is lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause, He answers them: Have ye not read that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said for this cause shall a man leave father and mother and shall cleave to his wife, and they twain shall be one flesh (matt. Xix. 4, Again As the days of Noe were so shall the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days of Noe that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not till the flood came and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be (matt. Xxiv. Again: And thou Capernaum which art exalted unto heaven shalt be brought down unto hell; for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for thee (matt. Xi. These utterances, every one feels, lose their weight and solemnity if there was no flood such as is described in Genesis, and if the destruction of wicked Sodom may be only a myth. Illustrations and parallels may, for certain purposes, be adduced from fictitious literature, but when the Lord would awaken the conscience of men and alarm their fears, by reference to the. Certainty of divine judgment, He will not confirm His teaching by instances of punishment which are only fabulous. His argument that the Holy and Just God will do as He has done - will make bare His arm as in the days of old is robbed, in this case, of all its validity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Quarterly Review, 1877, Vol. 59 We also welcome this work as an intrinsically valuable one. Being professedly in the form of outlines, and compassing in one octavo volume a rather broad'treatment of the topics of theology, most of the discussions are necessarily brief. Yet the need of elaboration'is largely superseded by thoroughness of analysis, exactness of method and definitive statement, terseness, and clearnes's of style. We do not propose a general review of the work before 11s, tubing wholly impracticable indeed within the necessary limits of this paper. After a brief notice of the more prominent points, we may consider more fully the discussion of some of the cardinal doctrines of christian theology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Quarterly Review, 1881, Vol. 63 The Christian Church is growing richer in biography from age to age. It is a principle Of the divine economy that the righteous shall be held in everlasting remembrance. While this is primarily true of the remembrance which God cherishes of his own, however little they may be thought of by an nu sympathetic world, yet it also has its application to the Church, which delights to preserve the memory Of her holy men and women. The Methodist Episcopal Church has always manifested a commendable interest in properly written memoirs of her de ceased Bishops. But, unfortunately, in several instances there has been either a lack of data attainable for the production of such memoirs, or a lack of interest or industry on the part of surviving friends in preparing them. I appreciate and honor, especially the great ideas Of Augustine, which, as reproduced and matured by John Calvin, mark a mighty epoch of progress in evangelical theology and practical religion.
