Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting is usually understood as an activity that bestows permanence, unity, and meaning on otherwise scattered and ephemeral objects. In The Redemption of Things, Samuel Frederick emphasizes that to collect things, however, always entails displacing, immobilizing, and potentially disfiguring them, too. He argues that the dispersal of objects, seemingly antithetical to the collector's task, is essential to the logic of gathering and preservation. Through analyses of collecting as a dialectical process of preservation and loss, The Redemption of Things illustrates this paradox by focusing on objects that challenge notions of collectability: ephemera, detritus, and trivialities such as moss, junk, paper scraps, dust, scent, and the transitory moment. In meticulous close readings of works by Gotthelf, Stifter, Keller, Rilke, Glauser, and Frisch, and by examining an experimental film by Oskar Fischinger, Frederick reveals how the difficulties posed by these fleeting, fragile, and forsaken objects help to reconceptualize collecting as a poetic activity that makes the world of scattered things uniquely palpable and knowable.

Book excerpt: The Things We Carry is an autobiographical account of a man's journey in a lifelong struggle against PTSD. Aside from trying to offer everyone a glimpse of what it is like to live with PTSD, the book is an attempt to suggest that despite the accepted disparities, there really are some shared commonalities among those who suffer this horrifying disorder--that sad sense of alienation from society. All of us, at some points in our lives, witness life-threatening experiences that may or may not leave considerable stress or trauma. Some of us are fortunate enough to have the ability to withstand even the worst experience life may bring, while some just don't have the innate capacity to do so. Readers will be invited to glimpse into the life of a war veteran, who, because of the power of his enduring faith in God and the ardent love and support of his family, was able to triumph over PTSD. At eighteen, the author is a corrections officer. Traumatized by the highly stressful employment by being subjected to mostly deplorable realities of prisons, he resigned, and one thing led to another until he decided to enlist with the US Air Force. He completed various tours in Southwest Asia and finally deploys to Iraq where he witnessed the most significant "triggers" to his PTSD. In essence, the author elaborates that The Things We Carry is an invitation to bear witness to the spiritual truth that all of humankind are born and destined to engage in a "spiritual combat" on a daily basis since we have consecrated our existence to follow and serve Christ. Further, this book aims to engage everyone to take his or her part, no matter how trivial or gargantuan, in helping every victim of extreme traumatic stress heal by making them feel that they belong, by making the feel that they are loved.

Book excerpt: This “luminescent” (Kirkus Reviews) story of anger and art, loss and redemption will appeal to fans of Lisa Graff’s Lost in the Sun and Vince Vawter’s Paperboy. NOMINATED FOR 16 STATE AWARDS! AN ALA NOTABLE BOOK AN ILA TEACHERS CHOICE A KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR Arthur T. Owens grabbed a brick and hurled it at the trash picker. Arthur had his reasons, and the brick hit the Junk Man in the arm, not the head. But none of that matters to the judge—he is ready to send Arthur to juvie forever. Amazingly, it’s the Junk Man himself who offers an alternative: 120 hours of community service . . . working for him. Arthur is given a rickety shopping cart and a list of the Seven Most Important Things: glass bottles, foil, cardboard, pieces of wood, lightbulbs, coffee cans, and mirrors. He can’t believe it—is he really supposed to rummage through people’s trash? But it isn’t long before Arthur realizes there’s more to the Junk Man than meets the eye, and the “trash” he’s collecting is being transformed into something more precious than anyone could imagine. . . . Inspired by the work of folk artist James Hampton, Shelley Pearsall has crafted an affecting and redemptive novel about discovering what shines within us all, even when life seems full of darkness. “A moving exploration of how there is often so much more than meets the eye.” —Booklist, starred review “There are so many things to love about this book. Remarkable.” —The Christian Science Monitor

Granted a healthy clone body by the Trisolarans, Yun has spent his very long life in exile as a traitor to the human race. Nearing the end of his existence at last, he suddenly receives another reprieve—and another regeneration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah 6:9 is a prophecy to Israel that they will "hear but not understand"; that they will "see but not perceive" this word from God to the nation was evident even when Jesus, the Messiah, came to Israel. They heard Him and saw Him but did not understand Him or perceive who He was. As a result, a "spirit of slumber" is upon the people to this day (Isaiah 29:10, Romans 11:7-8). Nationally, Israel has not yet awakened to belief in Jesus. But there is good news! The Jews are still God's chosen people, and God promises their joyous redemption to come (Romans 11:25-27). Angella Thomas delivers a two-pronged message of hope and challenge: Jewish readers will be given hope when they see the remedy for this historical blindness, and Christians will be challenged to join God in fulfilling the redemption of His people. "But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation...." Isaiah 45:17.

Book excerpt: “Christian psychology is not a knowledge of man, but a knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Oswald Chambers begins The Psychology of Redemption with these bold words, challenging us to take the perfect life of Jesus Christ as our model for holy character development. Jesus restored humanity to a right relationship with God, and He demonstrated the holy mind-set of a life set apart to the mission of God’s love. By drawing parallels between the life of Christ and the Christian’s life of faith, Chambers teaches us how to “have the mind of Christ.”

Book excerpt: In The Last Things Donald G. Bloesch takes up difficult and sometimes controversial themes such as the coming of the kingdom of God, the return of Jesus Christ, the life hereafter, the millennial hope, the final judgment, hell, heaven, purgatory and paradise. Wrestling with biblical texts that often take metaphorical form, Bloesch avoids rationalistic reductionism as well as timid agnosticism. While he acknowledges mystery and even paradox, Bloesch finds biblical revelation much more than sufficient to illuminate the central truths of a Christian hope articulated throughout the history of the church. The Last Things is not just a review of past Christian eschatology but a fresh articulation of the grace and glory of God yet to be consummated. The triumph of the grace of Jesus Christ and the dawning of hope beckon us to reach out in the power of the Spirit to receive that blessed future and the promise to renew the life of the church universal today.

Book excerpt: If you live for people's acceptance, you'll die from their rejection. Two-time Grammy winning rap artist, Lecrae, learned this lesson through more than his share of adversity—childhood abuse, drugs and alcoholism, a stint in rehab, an abortion, and an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Along the way, Lecrae attained an unwavering faith in Jesus and began looking to God for affirmation. Now as a chart-topping industry anomaly, he has learned to ignore the haters and make peace with his craft. The rap artist holds nothing back as he divulges the most sensitive details of his life, answers his critics, shares intimate handwritten journal entries, and powerfully models how to be a Christian in a secular age. This is the story of one man's journey to faith and freedom. *Cover/Interior design by Alex Medina, photography by Mary Caroline Mann

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simone Weil's supernaturalist interpretations of tragedy challenge not only the philosophical skepticism but also the religious rationalism characteristic of the modern age. This book boldly points out a supernaturalist alternative to contemporary, post-structuralist literary theory. This study of classical tragic drama offers a sacralizing impetus to secular discussions of literature. The book's Platonic premises and its grounding in the transcendental outlook of the religious traditions furnish a sacred illumination. Religious mystery and the cross of Christ both overshadow and deepen philosophical approaches to literary criticism, including theories of tragedy. Simone Weil's conception of tragic art, rooted in a mystical Christian metaphysics, offers original insight into the nature of tragedy. In contradiction of the prevailing secular outlook, Weil regards classical tragedy as a sacred art form. Tragic masterpieces evoke not the chaotic or irrational, as modernist interpreters hold, but rather a good which is absolute
