Book excerpt: David Rigsbees poems focus on the relationship between memory and place, self and other, and history and story. The poems record not only the fact that events and experiences bring us to loss, to the Adamic vastnesses, but that their transformation into memory can also uncover occasions for redemptive hope. Rigsbees poemsintensely felt, formally rigorousare grounded in the South and in generations of family. They move through suicide, disease, survival and dementia to the spreading loam of racism, spiritual erosion, and permanently deferred dreams; from the hardscrabble seasons and their too-brief flowerings, to empathy suspended elegiacally over loss, shaping the climate of felt life.

Dr Watson has been invited to Crain Manor, where his old friend James Crain is to hold a spiritualist gathering. During a séance a ghostly figure is seen, supposedly the spirit of Sybille, the first Lady Crain, who murdered her husband in the tower room, and whose appearance is said to be a sign of disaster. In an attempt to debunk the seance, James's sister Esther declares that she will sleep in the tower room - but at midnight there is a bloodcurdling scream and Esther is found dead, a look of horror on her face, and the room locked from the inside. Watson sends for Sherlock Holmes to investigate the tragic death. But it will be anything but straightforward, as there are those who do not want him to succeed...

Book excerpt: The poet had found a room to write, situated above Red Tower Street, in the city of music and coffee houses. His creativity flowed and poetry came to him instantly, recalling immediate past happenings. A change in the environment will induce that with a fruitful multitude of reflections and thoughts about love and death, as depicted in part one of this edition. In the second part, the poet muses about the love between a bard and his muse and the sweetness of love at an ongoing advanced age. In part three, he ponders about the events that offer him reincarnation and render him an awareness of the powers of eroticism. Part four are songs of a poet in love while commuting from the distant periphery of a world city to its historic core, where his refuge - the gift of a tryst - is awaiting him. The texts are enhanced with drawings by the poet, from the time of writing the poems, depicting the artistic tension between the lyrics and their visual interpretations.

Research carried out during the last quarter of the 20th century has permitted us to re-think the way in which some ancient civilizations went about their beer production. There have also been some highly innovative technical developments, many of which have led to the sophistication and efficiency of 21st century brewing methodology. A History of Beer and Brewing covers a time-span of around eight thousand years and in doing so:·Stimulates the reader to consider how, and why, the first fermented beverages might have originated·Establishes some of the parameters that encompass the diverse range of alcoholic beverages assigned the generic name 'beer'·Considers the possible means of dissemination of early brewing technologies from their Near Eastern originsThe book is aimed at a wide readership particularly beer enthusiasts. However the use of original quotations and references associated with them should enable the serious scholar to delve into this subject in even greater depth.

Book excerpt: "One of the most exciting recent developments in the study of Chinese literature has been the rediscovery of an extremely rich and diverse tradition of women’s writing of the imperial period (221 B.C.E.–1911 C.E.). Many of these writings are of considerable literary quality. Others provide us with moving insights into the lives and feelings of a surprisingly diverse group of women living in Confucian China, a society that perhaps more than any other is known for its patriarchal tradition.Because of the burgeoning interest in the study of both premodern and modern women in China, several scholarly books, articles, and even anthologies of women’s poetry have been published in the last two decades. This anthology differs from previous works by offering a glimpse of women’s writings not only in poetry but in other genres as well, including essays and letters, drama, religious writing, and narrative fiction. The authors have presented the selections within their respective biographical and historical contexts. This comprehensive approach helps to clarify traditional Chinese ideas on the nature and function of literature as well as on the role of the woman writer."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychopath Factory: How Capitalism Organizes Empathy examines how the requirements, stimuli, affects and environments of work condition our empathy. In some cases, work calls for no empathy – characters who don’t blink or flinch in the face of danger nor crack under pressure. In other cases, capitalism requires empathy in spades –charming, friendly, sensitive and listening managers, customer service agents and careers. When workers are required to either ignore their empathy to-do a job, or dial it up to increase productivity, they are entering a psychopathic modality. The affective blitz of work, flickering screens, emotive content, vibrating alerts and sounding alarms erode our sensitivities whilst we are modulated with attention stimulants, social lubricants and so called anti-anxiety drugs. This is amidst a virulent and exacerbating climate of competition and frenzied quantification. Capitalism pressures us to feign empathy and leverage social relationships on one hand, whilst being cold and pragmatic on the other. We are passionate and enthusiastic whilst keeping a professional distance. Sympathy, care, compassion and altruism are important; The Psychopath Factory: How Capitalism Organizes Empathy argues that itis a mistake to presuppose that empathy can achieve these. Rather than being subject to the late capitalist organization of our empathy, psychopathy could be a means of escape.

Book excerpt: A literary phenomenon in Italy, this European best-seller was voted the best Italian novel of the decade in a public survey. Its success has gone way beyond Italy, having been translated into Spanish, French, Japanese and 3 other languages. This epic historical novel about World War II and after, written from the author's own personal experiences as an Italian Freedom Fighter, is a profoundly moving account of the war, those who fought in it on both sides, and the effects the war had on families in the author's hometown in northern Italy. On a wider scale, it is a faithful witness to the actual events of the war-including the historic personages who appear, the Russian campaign, the Nazi barbarism, the Communist gulag, the North Italian resistance, and beyond to the political life in the two decades after the war. This world, filled with powerful personalities, drama and clashing armies, bathes in the complex light of the truth. A truly great historical novel with its epic scope, what makes this a masterpiece is the underlying spiritual dimensions of the protagonist, his family and friends, which illuminates the ongoing tragedy of the war and its aftermath. In the end, it is a story of faith and hope in a world reduced to barbarism and cruelty. Born in 1921 in Lombardy, Eugenio Corti joined the Italian Freedom Fighters. From his experiences of the tragic retreat from Russia, Corti wrote a fascinating chronicle, Most Did Not Return, and a book about the Italian Freedom Fighters, The Last Soldiers of the King.

Book excerpt: The Crusaders' settlement of Palestine in the 12th and 13th centuries has been seen in terms of the domination of a native peasantry by an alien military elite and as Europe's first experiment in overseas colonization. This monograph attempts to shed light on the effects that the crusader conquest of AD 1099 would have on the pattern of settlement in the country by considering one particular part of it, the central Sharon Plain. In 1983 excavations conducted by the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem at the Red Tower, a small Crusader castle situated in the centre of the plain, were combined with a programme of archaeological field survey in the surrounding region. There are chapters on history and architecture, as well as a full descriptive gazetteer of sites in the central Sharon plain occupied between 1099 and 1516, giving an invaluable picture of the impact the Crusaders had on the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These studies examine the physical remains of Frankish settlement in Palestine in the 12th and 13th centuries. In recent years the view that Frankish settlement was largely confined to the fortified urban centres and castles, with few westerners venturing into the open countryside, has come to be challenged in the light of new archaeological evidence and re-examination of the sources. The present studies contribute to an understanding of the nature of Frankish settlement by illustrating aspects of the relationship between fortification and settlement: in particular, the role of castles and towers in promoting settlement and providing both security and domestic accommodation; the relationship between castles, towers and other semi-fortified rural structures; the physical planning of the new towns established by the canons of the Holy Sepulchre; the measures undertaken to defend urban settlements; and the contribution that town walls and castles made to the security of the kingdom.
