Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the reciprocal relationship between text literacy and music literacy through an experimental design. Music teachers and English Language Arts (ELA) teachers often address similar components of literacy, including fluency, comprehension, and symbolic interpretation. The theory of cognitive structuralism maintains that through derivative and correlative subsumption, material that is learned in one context is strengthened when applied in a disparate context. Therefore, ELA and music teachers who work in isolation are missing an opportunity to teach parallel literacy concepts for the common advantage of teachers and students. This study seeks to explain how students enrolled in conventional and literacy-enriched band environments perform better than non-band students on text literacy tests. It also asks if conventional band students differ from literacy-enriched band students on text and musical literacy tests. Fourth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group (n = 11), a conventionally taught beginning band group (n = 11), and a literacy-enriched beginning band group (n = 10). The experimental treatment included 14 small group band lessons and 14 full band rehearsals. Groups were then compared for textual literacy growth using the NWEA Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) and musical growth using the Watkins Farnum Performance Scale (WFPS). ANCOVA planned contrasts showed that literacy-enriched students significantly outperformed conventional band students and control students on the MAP literature reading subtest. The research design allowed for the defense of literacy-enriched band instruction as a generalizable cause of higher literacy scores. Additional comparisons between the control group and the two experimental groups revealed no statistically significant differences between the group means on the overall reading scores or the remaining reading subtest scores. The lack of significance suggested that the statistical model was a poor fit for the data. Furthermore, a small sample size and large unexplained variance contributed to a lack of statistical power. Therefore, the application of the cognitive structuralist theory on the remaining MAP reading tests remained inconclusive. The conventional and literacy-enriched band groups were also compared against each other on text and music literacy growth. There were no statistically significant differences between the conventional group and literacy-enriched group on the MAP or on the WFPS. This suggested that literacy-enriched instruction in band could benefit a student's textual literacy skills without compromising musical performance goals. It also suggested that more study is needed to determine the extent to which the explicit instruction of ELA reading skills in band may benefit musical ability. The overall findings implied that literacy-enriched band instruction caused higher textual literacy scores, and the results may be generalized to similar circumstances. Suggestions for practice included increased collaboration among teachers, enhanced teacher pre-service and in-service opportunities, additional use of student-centered progressive instructional strategies, and the careful reconsideration of eliminating or reducing the availability of band to students. Future research would benefit from the quantitative and qualitative models proposed herein.

So begins the relationship between music and literacy, but the precise role of music in literacy instruction and development has not been clearly determined. This research study addresses this problem of precision by asking the question, what does research show about the role of music in literacy instruction? The most appropriate way to answer this question is with a review and synthesis of the literature, which has determined five findings. First is that direct uses of music for positive results in literacy instruction include singing, playing instruments, listening, processing rhythm, and reading lyrics. Second is that direct use of music in literacy instruction is effective with diverse students such as struggling readers, EFL students, and students from low socio-economic diverse students such as struggling readers, EFL students, and students from low socio-economic status. The third finding is that direct use of music in literacy instruction is also as effective as traditional teaching methods for improving literacy skills. The fourth finding is that the primary indirect use of music in literacy instruction is as background music, with a positive effect on literacy performance coming from music that is characteristically soft, slow, and instrumental: for example, Baroque and Classical music. The fifth finding is that the types of background music that do not have a positive effect on literacy performance are characteristically complex,fast, and vocal: for example, hip hop and popular music with lyrics. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Singing exaggerates the language of reading. The students find their voices in the rhythm and bounce of language by using music as an alternative text. A concurrent mixed methods study was conducted to investigate the use of an interactive sing-to-read program Tune Into Reading (Electronic Learning Products, 2006) as an alternative text, embedded within a heterogeneous music classroom. Measured by the Qualitative Reading Inventory-4 (QRI-4) (Leslie & Caldwell, 2006), the fluency, word recognition, comprehension, and instructional reading level of the treatment students were compared to their counterparts who sang as part of the regular music program. Concurrently, this investigation also provided a description of the peers' interactions during the literacy task assigned by the music teacher. The intent of this study was to address the following three research questions. First, what is the difference in reading outcomes for students who used the singing software verses the students who sang as part of their regular music curriculum? Second, are the reading outcomes different when the students were grouped by FCAT reading levels? Third, how do the peers interact during the literacy task of singing to read? The first two questions addressed the quantitative phase of this study to assess the collective differences on the dependent variables overtime and by group. The qualitative phase in this study used an interpretive case study approach to describe peer interactions during the assigned literacy task. The study findings suggest that rereading through singing, using the interactive singing program, Tune Into Reading, was more effective regardless of the reading levels for treatment students compared to control students. In addition, prosody appeared to have a direct connection to reading comprehension. Furthermore, the use of the interactive program provided opportunities for differentiated reading level achievement. Finally, group dynamics highly influenced the early adolescent's motivation, engagement, participation, and successful outcomes in reading fluency.

Through these activities I have attempted to better equip my students with music literacy strategies to address what I have perceived as a deficiency in my pedagogy and to set up the students to have more efficacy and independence in their own musical learning. In the first lesson and video, I aim to equip the students with a structured sight-reading system to enable them to decode musical passages and composer intent in hopes of a stronger initial performance. Highlighted in the second video, I have the students put this sight-reading system to practice in small ensembles, while under a time limit and before a classroom performance and review. Lastly, in the third lesson and video, I introduce the first iteration of a daily "literacy ritual," inspired by Robert Sheldon. I endeavor to strengthen the music literacy of the entire ensemble through new approaches via the above activities. My time working on my Master's degree at Kansas State University has inspired me to critically consider my instructional methods and the needs of the students entrusted to me. Am I teaching the way I do because it worked for me as a student, that is how I have seen others do it, or am I truly considering the needs of the students in front of me and adjusting my practice to meet them where they are? As a result of deep self-reflection throughout my studies, I uncovered a habit of not reviewing key concepts, instead teaching by rote to the detriment of a number of students. Similarly, I was inspired to consider my daily activities, such as warmups. Are the warmups I assign connecting to the content I deliver or are they just another stale and time-consuming routine while I complete the attendance roll for the main office? By thoughtfully crafting and customizing daily warmup activities, I discovered how I can still check the box of basic skill development while also setting students up for greater success with the ensemble literature to follow. In these ways and more, I have become better equipped as an educator to serve my students.
