Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ready Guide to British Birds AS the result Of long experience the author has cc me to the conclusion that there is a need for a guide to British Birds at once more Simple and more ready than any yet published. After various experiments the plan adopted in this book was decided upon, viz. First to arrange the descriptions SO that in the case Of each bird the same characteristics (colour, flight, haunts, &c.) always follow one another in the same order and then to divide the descriptions into vertical columns, SO that the Observer can, by looking down any one column, run through the different descriptions Of any particular feature until he comes to one which corresponds to what he has observed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Handbook of British Birds Although the urgent need for compression has prohibited the author from presenting this work as a complete natural history of British Birds, yet he believes that as a handy textbook for reference it has had as yet no rivals. It has been brought up to date as far as possible, every species on the British list having been included, and nearly all described, while the records Of the rarer species have been carefully collected, and in the case Of the common species a tolerably complete life-history has been given. The numbering Of the genera and species will also probably prove Of service. The length Of a bird is (unless otherwise stated) measured from the base Of bill to tip Of tail, all measure ments being in inches and hundredth-parts. The description first given is (unless expressly mentioned) that Of a bird in breeding plumage, 'but the seasonal changes, if appreciable, are added. The habitat may be taken as meaning the region inhabited during the breeding season, but the winter range Of migratory species has usually been added. If brackets enclose a describer's name they indicate that the generic name adopted is not that used by the describer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Birds: Key List Measurements of length are given, but only as an attempt to show the proportionate size of a species. In the writer's Opinion measurements are not of much service, especially as hardly any two persons measure a bird in the same manner. Unless otherwise stated, the sexes are alike in plumage, and the remarks refer to adults in summer plumage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated Manual of British Birds The plan of a work in which exactly two pages are devoted to each species, may justly be called Procrustean; and, unfortunately for the author, the limited space at his disposal has often been em croached upon owing to the length of an engraving, whereas exten sion of the text has rarely been called for. Little idea, for instance, can be formed of the labour involved in an article like that on the Cross bill, wherein the necessary consideration of the distinctive features of several local races increased the difficulty of sketching briefly the history of a remarkable bird. In this and similar cases, when four lines in excess meant as many hours of hard work in condensing, the writer has sometimes been tempted - in the interest of his readers as well as in his own - to deviate from the original scheme; yet any such concession must necessarily have led to an increase in the bulk and the expense of the work. Even now, the low price is due to the fact that the publishers own the blocks from which the illustrations were struck for the four editions of Yarrell's 'british Birds'; though to these have been added wood-cuts of many recent wanderers to Great Britain, such as the Isabelline, Blackr throated and Desert W heatears, the Barred Warbler, wall-creeper. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sportsman's British Bird Book The illustrations, which speak for themselves, are absolutely true to nature, having, in the great majority of instances, been photographed under the personal superintendence of Mr. Rowland Ward from specimens mounted at his studios in Piccadilly for this particular purpose. A considerable number of these specimens have been pre sented by Mr. Ward to the Natural History Museum, where they are exhibited in the British Saloon at the end of the Bird Gallery. A novel feature is the omission of the names of authorities and Observers of the facts recorded in this volume, many of whom are unknown to the general public. This is justified by the circum stance that when a statement has once been published it becomes public property. In certain books on the same subject it has been attempted to draw a distinction between birds which can properly be regarded as British and those which cannot lay a claim to such a privilege. Any such distinction is, however, manifestly an impossibility, and all the species are accordingly treated in serial order, although such as are mere stragglers are not accorded insets of their own in the text. The introduction of a certain number of technical terms relating to the plumage, such as wing-coverts, primary and secondary quills, etc., is unavoidable. The meaning of these - as well as of other terms used in scientific ornithology - will, however, be made apparent at a glance by the diagrammatic sketch of the topography of a bird's plumage on page xviii. In future editions, should such be called for, it will be the special aim of both the publisher and author to keep the work up to date. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Birds: Descriptions of All the Commoner Species, Their Nests and Eggs The object of this book is to make as easy as limits of space permit the recognition of all the British species, their nests and eggs, except the rarest. The descriptions have been written with an eye to the requirements of the non-specialist observer, and, if the instructions on p. Viii are followed, they should prove adequate for practical purposes. Descriptions of the female bird and of the young are given only when these differ markedly from the adult male. Like wise seasonal changes of plumage are ignored unless marked enough to make a description necessary for identification. The descriptions and measurements of eggs follow for the most part those of the Rev. F. C. R Jourdain in the British Bird Book. Complete descriptions of nests have yet to be written, the range of material used by particular species being much greater than the standard works would lead one to suppose. The descriptions here given will, however, suffice for purposes of identification. The short notes on migration and distribution, and other information as to time of laying, &c., are introduced solely to aid identification by showing when and where the species and their eggs are to be found. Limitations of space make it obviously impossible to give anything but the strict minimum of information necessary for this purpose.
