Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fisheries of the North Sea Reader understand the ramifications of a business which is not easily understood by the interested spectator for conditions are constantly changing, and there is no resemblance between our modern methods of fishing and those in vogue thirty years ago. In this account there is necessarily much that will not be new to those who are engaged in the industry but SO great are the possibilities and opportunities for future development, and so pressing is the need for taking full advantage Of our magnificent heritage of the sea, that the public ought to be better informed, or many grave mistakes will be made. Already several pronounced politicians have inaugurated a body called the Empire Resources Development Committee. These men would like to see the State control the industry, with a view to making it a Government monopoly and diverting the profits into the Treasury. Anyone who understands the industry knows this to be both impracticable and unjust. The seas do not belong to the British Empire any more than they do to Germany or Norway. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea Fisheries: Salmon Fisheries Of particular trades and manufactures, all Of which are of essential consequence to a maritime people like our own; and that they are a regular means Of training a large number of men and boys to the endurance of hardships and dangers, which are unavoidable elements in a seafaring life. And when we consider the extent of our coast line, and that at even every little village on it, some of the population, and frequently many of them, are fishermen, we can hardly doubt but that the self-reliance and forethought induced in them by the necessities of their vocation, must have some influence for good on the national character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea Fisheries: Their Treasures and Toilers The English press has given my book a very flattering welcome, and I am glad to seize an opportunity of expressing my gratitude; especially would I thank Mr. Stephen Reynolds, who stated, in the Daily News, his encouraging opinion that an English translation was called for. Finally I have to thank Mr. Fisher Unwin, who has taken the initiative in offering this translation to the English public. It is true that I wrote for my compatriots; wishing to advise them as to the development of ocean fisheries, to put them on guard against their mistakes, and to do my best to prepare a better future for them. But the model which I have held before their eyes, the country I advise them to imitate, is Great Britain. I will even say that it is enough to understand the history and the economy of the English fisheries in order to formulate the general rules of the industry. Such is the truth I have tried to establish contained in a few lines; and in this light I would put before our friends across the Channel a book which was in fact written for them as well as for my countrymen. The English have always had the faculty of uniting tradition and progress; with them the things of yesterday and the things of to-day are not in perpetual conflict. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Sea and River: Research at the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, Biological Laboratory, Seattle, Washington, 1966-68 As the 1960's draw to a close, man is focusing his attention on the resources of the sea. Although production of marine minerals is increasing, the world's fisheries still give the greatest economic yield from the sea. Our country has less than 7 percent of the world pop alation; we capture only 4 percent and consume about 12 percent of the world catch of fish. We are the world's largest market, but our vessels supply only 30 percent of the u.s. Demand for fishery products. Demographers predict that the population of the United States Will grow to 350 million by the year 2000. More food will have to come from the ocean. But increased harvests will be possible only if our fishing industry is strengthened and the resources, partie ularly underutilized stocks of fish, are developed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Condition of the Sea Fisheries of the South Coast of New England in 1871 and 1872 The importance to the United States of the fisheries on its coasts can scarcely be exaggerated, whether we consider the amount Of wholesome food which they yield, the pecuniary value of their products, the num ber of men and boys for whom they furnish profitable occupation, the stimulus to ship and boat building which they supply, and, not the least of all, their service as a school for seamen, from which the mer chant-marine, as well as the Navy Of the country, derive their most important recruits. A few years ago, in view of the enormous abundance of fish originally existing in the sea, the suggestion of a possible failure would have been considered idle; and the fisheries themselves have been managed with out reference to the possibility of a future exhaustion. The country has, however, been growing very rapidly the construction of railroads and the use or ice for packing have furnished facilities for sending fish in good condition all over the country, and the demand for them has increased in proportion. The Object of those engaged in the fisheries has been to Obtain the largest supply in the shortest possible time, and this has involved more or less of waste, and, in some cases, reckless destruction of the fish. Fish form the fourth class of vertebrate animals, and, 'as a general rule, live in water; although in Ceylon and India species are found which live in the earth, or, at any rate, that exist in mud, not to speak of others said to occupy the trees of those countries! The classification of fishes given by Cuvier is usually adopted. He has divided these animals into those with true bones, and those having a cartilaginous structure the former, again, being divided into acanthopterous and malcopterous fish. Other naturalists have adopted more elaborate classifications; but Cuvier's being the simplest has a strong claim to be considered the best, and is the one generally used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unutilized Fishes and Their Relation to the Fishing Industries The method Of investigation was to secure as many as possible of the valueless fishes in question from various localities in the vicinity of Woods Hole, and immediately after capture to preserve the entire contents of the stomach or the whole digestive tube of each. A sepa rate dish received this content from each fish, and over it was poured a formalin solution of about 2 per cent strength. Further action of the digestive juices was thus prevented, and the material was pre served for study at convenience.
