Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word prosetry does not exist. But the author of this book of prosetry uses it to describe the presentation of prose in a manner that attempts to depict the aims and objectives of poetry. The Rain Drop and Other Shades of Prosetry is written in five sections. The first is The Rain Drop and tells of an author who has just achieved great success. He reflects back on an embarrassing incident that happened when he was six, and which comes to mind whenever it rains. The second story, The Priest, is about a man who became a priest by accident, but grows to love his chosen profession. Then he is presented a great temptation when he meets a woman who resembles a girl he loved as a teenager. The Cricketer shows the game through the eyes of an experienced player, one about to go through a very unusual experience during a cricket match. In The Driver, the anxieties of an aging Formula One racecar driver show what happens during what could be the last year of his racing career. In the fifth and final story, The Admirer, the anguish of a young man who has fallen madly in love with a girl he has never spoken with is told in prosetry.

Book excerpt: A provocative, challenging masterpiece by John Ashbery that set a new standard for the modern prose poem “The pathos and liveliness of ordinary human communication is poetry to me,” John Ashbery has said of this controversial work, a collection of three long prose poems originally published in 1972, adding, “Three Poems tries to stay close to the way we talk and think without expecting what we say to be recorded or remembered.” The effect of these prose poems is at once deeply familiar and startlingly new, something like encountering a collage made of lines clipped from every page of a beloved book—or, as Ashbery has also said of this work, like flipping through television channels and hearing an unwritten, unscriptable story told through unexpected combinations of voices, settings, and scenes. In Three Poems, Ashbery reframes prose poetry as an experience that invites the reader in through an infinite multitude of doorways, and reveals a common language made uncommonly real.

Book excerpt: This fascinating book explores Beat Generation writing from a transnational perspective, using the concept of worlding to place Beat literature in conversation with a far-reaching network of cultural and political formations. Countering the charge that the Beats abroad were at best na•ve tourists seeking exoticism for exoticism's sake, World Beats finds that these writers propelled a highly politicized agenda that sought to use the tools of the earlier avant-garde to undermine Cold War and postcolonial ideologies and offer a new vision of engaged literature. With fresh interpretations of central Beat authors Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs - as well as usually marginalized writers like Philip Lamantia, Ted Joans, and Brion Gysin - World Beats moves beyond national, continental, or hemispheric frames to show that embedded within Beat writing is an essential universality that brought America to the world and the world to American literature. This book presents an original treatment that will attract a broad spectrum of scholars.

Book excerpt: 2nd finalist for the 2011 Asian American Literary Award for Poetry Shortlisted for the 2011 PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry Nominated for the McLaughlin-Esstman-Stearns First Novel Prize "There is no more perfect place to be than in Molly Gaudry s tender, dirt-floored novella, "We Take Me Apart." Oh cabbage leaves, oh roses, oh orange-slice childhood grins: this book broke my heart. Its sad memory-tropes come from fairy tales & childhood books. With language, Gaudry is as loving & careful as one is with a matchbook . . . when wishing to set the whole word on fire. --Kate Bernheimer, author of "The Complete Tales of Merry Gold" "Molly Gaudry's debut evokes the spirit of iconic fairy tales that have transported readers for centuries. Her variations on these themes delineate the psychological journey from girlhood to womanhood. But "We Take Me Apart" is more than a retelling. In it, Gaudry reconstitutes the essence of what makes fairy tales compelling, and she does so imaginatively and with great attention to language, the earmarks of poetry."--Christopher Kennedy, author of "Encouragement for a Man Falling to His Death" "Molly Gaudry's "We Take Me Apart" works "thread into lace" . . . especially vivid in this book-length work is the mother's entrance and exit, where the ragged lines swell and turn sonnet-like with love."--Terese Svoboda, author of "Weapons Grade" "Molly Gaudry's "We Take Me Apart" is a dazzleflage of a book. The stuttering disrupted language of this cubist concoction disappears before your ears, sinks into your eyes. This aggressive dress camouflage reweaves Gertrude Stein's rewoven grammar of worsted silk-screened gabardine into a fully ripped patois-ed pattern of stunning wonder."--Michael Martone, author of "Michael Martone"

The feud that erupted as a result has continued for over a century. Lyndall Gordon, an award-winning biographer, tells the riveting story of the Dickinsons, and reveals Emily as a very different woman from the pale, lovelorn recluse that exists in the popular imagination. Thanks to unprecedented use of letters, diaries, and legal documents, Gordon digs deep into the life and work of Emily Dickinson, to reveal the secret behind the poet's insistent seclusion, and presents a woman beyond her time who found love, spiritual sustenance, and immortality all on her own terms. An enthralling story of creative genius, filled with illicit passion and betrayal, Lives Like Loaded Guns is sure to cause a stir among Dickinson's many devoted readers and scholars.

Book excerpt: These two timeless epics by the ancient Greek poet—each translated by a world-renowned author—have captured the Western imagination for millennia. The Iliad: Alexander Pope “works miracles” in this beautiful verse translation of Homer’s epic poem set near the end of the Trojan War. It centers on a quarrel between the invading Greek king Agamemnon and his greatest asset in battle, the warrior Achilles. From this conflict, Homer weaves a tale of warring nations, vengeful gods, and the terrible consequences of prideful rage (The New York Times). The Odyssey: The Trojan War is over and Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, embarks to return home. But he is cursed by the god Poseidon to wander the perilous earth for ten years before reaching his destination. Homer’s epic adventure of survival by wit and battling mythical creatures is presented here in a stirring prose translation by Samuel Butler.
