Book excerpt: The Quirky Clan – A Biography of an Eccentric Family’s Unconventional Lives is the story of the extraordinary life of Anna Rains and her very eccentric family. Spanning five generations, it was written to tell her grandchildren and those coming after about the lives of their predecessors so that these wonderful stories would not be lost forever. At the centre of the story is Anna herself, and her unusual and colourful childhood. Often touching, always funny and upbeat, it begins with her travels round the country with her parents and siblings in a converted bus. A funfair and circus were part of these journeys. A remote cottage with no water, electricity, or sanitation, and Romany gypsy neighbours also played significant roles in the fascinating early life of the author. Her later life has been equally engrossing. She describes the one-way ticket to Hong Kong when she was eighteen and her experiences in the early seventies in California with hippie neighbours, (she grew up fast, she says!) Thumbnail sketches of her many jobs are amusingly combined with accounts of flying lessons, sailing, her forty-six moves to new homes, and stories about her aunt, eccentric mother and grandmother, and unusual friends. At the age of 81 she says she is still living life to the full. Never bored and, metaphorically, still finding ‘new mountains to climb’. One grandfather was a toy salesman, the other a colonel who was awarded the CMG for bravery in the First World War. Among the historical memories are details about this grandfather’s time in the trenches while serving in the Royal Scots, (The Royal Regiment). Accounts of his and her uncle’s military careers are included in the book. Beautifully written, and with a wonderful sense of fun and self-mockery, The Quirky Clan is an account of a life lived to the full by the indomitable Anna, and her zestful enjoyment of whatever fate has offered.

Jade Falcon Galaxy Commander Malvina Hazen and her warriors are encamped on the planet Skye in their Occupation Zone, overseeing the consolidation of power on the worlds they've wrested from The Republic. Book excerpt: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first love relives their six-year journey during his explosive first years in America. While she watches Arnold surpass his dreams, Barbara learns to transform hers -- from desiring what cannot be to cherishing what is so. As a woman who spends her adult life trying to get out from under Arnold’s shadow, Barbara Baker learns about the shifting direction of life's journey. She hopes for normalcy during and after living with her stratospherically successful Austrian Oak bodybuilder. Barbara finds life anything but normal, however. Within Arnold and Me, she strips down this conjoined twosome as they launch their adult lives into polar opposite journeys. After their breakup, Arnold transcends the role of Hercules to become the Governator. He marries once and produces four children; to the contrary, the English Professor says “I do” four times, yet bears no offspring. Along with vintage photos and firsthand dialogue, the book’s resolution forces their singular lives to merge at a satisfying junction. Despite their divergent paths, both Arnold and Barbara demonstrate that achieving one’s dream demands a relentlessly flexible spirit. Barbara has skillfully rounded Arnold’s corners by offering heartfelt nuances about this man who marked her for life. The author’s enlightened voice also resonates with those who face relationship challenges over personal identity and fulfillment. She not only lifts herself into higher consciousness, but also the willing reader. Her journey has allowed her to find life’s richness through accepting not only Arnold’s daunting shadow, but also her own. This woman sings with energy, incrementally illuminating the rich lives of two ex-lovers within a beautifully developed, fast-paced story. Her readers continue to travel in their minds, breathing in the life of Arnold and Barbara long after the last word has been read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chilling true story of how the son of the most violent mobster in Chicago helped bring down the last great American crime syndicate: the one-hundred-year-old Chicago Outfit. In Operation Family Secrets, Frank Calabrese, Jr. reveals for the first time the outfit’s “made” ceremony and describes being put to work alongside his father and uncle in loan sharking, gambling, labor racketeering, and extortion. As members of the outfit, they plotted the slaying of a fellow gangster, committed the bombing murder of a trucking executive, the gangland execution of two mobsters—whose burial in an Indiana cornfield was reenacted in Martin Scorsese’s blockbuster film Casino—and numerous other hits. The Calabrese Crew’s colossal earnings and extreme ruthlessness made them both a dreaded criminal gang and the object of an intense FBi inquiry. When Frank Jr., his father, and Uncle Nick are convicted on racketeering violations, “Junior” and “Senior” are sent to the same federal penitentiary in Michigan. It's there that Frank Jr. makes the life-changing decision to go straight. But he needs to keep his father behind bars in order to regain control of his life and save his family. So Frank Jr. makes a secret deal with prosecutors, and for six months—unmonitored and unprotected—he wears a wire as his father recounts decades of hideous crimes. Frank Jr.’s cooperation with the FBI for virtually no monetary gain or special privileges helped create the government’s “Operation Family Secrets” campaign against the Chicago outfit, which reopened eighteen unsolved murders, implicated twelve La Cosa Nostra soldiers and two outfit bosses, and became one of the largest organized crime cases in U.S. history. Operation Family Secrets intimately portrays how organized crime rots a family from the inside out while detailing Frank Jr.’s deadly prison-yard mission, the FBI’s landmark investigation, and the U.S. attorney’s office’s daring prosecution of America’s most dangerous criminal organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most interesting ethnographies of experience are concerned to highlight the indeterminate nature of life. Questioning Misfortune is very much within this tradition. Based on a long-term study of adversity and its social causes in Bunyole, eastern Uganda, it considers the way in which people deal with uncertainties of life, such as sickness, suffering, marital problems, failure, and death. Divination may identify causes of misfortune, ranging from ancestors and spirits to sorcerers. Sufferers and their families will then try out a variety of remedial measures, including pharmaceuticals, sorcery antidotes, and sacrifices. But remedies often fail, and doubt and uncertainty persist. Even the commercialisation of biomedicine, and the peril of AIDS can be understood in terms of a pragmatics of uncertainty.

Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza’s way of healing, most come to accept her. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of 2-structures provides a convenient framework for decomposition and transformation of mathematical systems where one or several different binary relationships hold between the objects of the system. In particular, it forms a useful framework for decomposition and transformation of graphs. The decomposition methods presented in this book correspond closely to the top-down design methods studied in computer science. The transformation methods considered here have a natural interpretation in the dynamic evolution of certain kinds of communication networks. From the mathematical point of view, the clan decomposition method presented here, also known as modular decomposition or substitution decomposition, is closely related to the decomposition by quotients in algebra. The transformation method presented here is based on labelled 2-structures over groups, the theory of which generalizes the well-studied theory of switching classes of graphs. This book is both a text and a monograph. As a monograph, the results concerning the decomposition and transformation of 2-structures are presented in a unified way. In addition, detailed notes on references are provided at the end of each chapter. These notes allow the reader to trace the origin of many notions and results, and to browse through the literature in order to extend the material presented in the book. To facilitate its use as a textbook, there are numerous examples and exercises which provide an opportunity for the reader to check his or her understanding of the discussed material. Furthermore, the text begins with preliminaries on partial orders, semigroups, groups and graphs to the extent needed for the book. Request Inspection Copy

Book excerpt: The Vampire the Masquerade Clan Novel Saga is a thirteen-volume masterpiece, presenting the war between the established Camarilla leadership and the growing power of the brutal Sabbat on the East Coast of the United States. Each novel is told from the perspective of one of the thirteen clans, intertwining with the others, and filling in missing pieces artfully as we follow battle after battle, intrigue after intrigue—and the appearance of a strange artifact that falls into the hands of a solitary Toreador sculptor. Clan Novel Toreador is the first in this series. Among the thirteen clans of the Kindred—vampires who secretly manipulate human events—the Toreador are dismissed as hedonists. They accept this as the price of preserving that which is beautiful...particularly themselves. Yet not all Toreador are so easily ignored. the cunning Victoria Ash makes Atlanta's most famous art museum her venue for plots that could win her control of the city. And though the sculptor Leopold desires only solitude to perfect his art, he is forced to enter the dangerous world of his kin to discover the truth of his past—with consequences that will change Kindred society forever.
