Especially if you know something you were never supposed to.I'm Q : video-gamer, cookie-addict, professional couch-potato. And I just stumbled onto a secret that will probably kill me. Okay that last part was a lie. It's definitely going to kill me. Look, it's not like I did it on purpose. I really didn't mean to find that hidden lab underneath my house, and I certainly didn't mean to open that forbidden vault of secrets either. But I did both those things anyway, and now I have to pay the price. I was an average teenager two days ago; I skipped classes, ate cookies and played Super Mario. Now I'm a sword-wielding, spell-casting space sorcerer who has no clue what the heck is going on. People say teenagers are experts at adapting to new worlds. And I'll be damned if I don't prove them right. I'm Q : Space Warrior, Cookie-Addict, Part-Time Sorcerer, and I'm probably going to die tonight.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the world of The Quest Saga, a magickal, faery-tale inspired fantasy epic combining traditional Dungeons & Dragons fantasy with mythical elements of Chinese fantasy in a thrilling, action-packed adventure. For Sir Kain Viccon, 113th Grand General of the Kingdom of Arcainia, life has become about as calm as can be for a military man. Peace has been established with Arcainia and the other four kingdoms of the realm of Aztlan as well as with the Empire of China an ocean away. Kain juggles his military life and personal life with the role of single parent as he struggles to raise his feisty teen sister Nancy who herself dreams of following in the footsteps of her brother. Their tranquility is shattered the day he comes back into their life. The sadistic warlock Noknor, who orphaned Kain and Nancy as children by murdering their parents in their own home, has returned. In a bid to conquer all of Aztlan and bring the realm under his cruel fist, Noknor has launched a siege on the Kingdom of Kuberica. With his massive Dark Army, Noknor has seized the castle, murdered the king, and subjugated the Kuberican people. With the call for help sent out, Kain and Nancy may finally have their chance to bring peace to his parents' souls. Kain musters his army to counterattack, while Nancy convinces him to allow her to join his cause by proving a warrior skill so amazing even he is shocked.Noknor, however, will not be brought down so easily. The warlock has discovered a powerful faery amulet that gives him incredible power, making him nearly immortal. Together, Kain and Nancy set out to find a weapon equal to Noknor's amulet: the Elemental Sword. Their quest to find the Ladys of the Elements to ask for their sword will be long and fraught with peril as they adventure all over Aztlan to find the four faery queens. If the siblings have any hope to survive, they will need to have their full wits about them - a difficult prospect when Nancy is consumed by a zealous thirst for revenge and Kain, terrified that she may be losing her innocence, watches his baby sister grow up way too fast. The people of Kuberica suffer under the warlock's tyranny. With Noknor's red glowing eyes set on their kingdom next, Kain and Nancy must rush to find the Elemental Sword and defeat the warlock before he becomes unstoppable. However, as their quest leads them further away from home, neither realize that they have left the only family they have left vulnerable to Noknor's schemes. With inspiration drawn from Hispanic, Chinese, and American mythos and set against a backdrop of swords-&-sorcery fantasy, The Quest Saga is a familiar tale made refreshingly unique in its diverse culture fusion, martial-arts action, and magickal wonder.

Book excerpt: In a world where technology melds with ancient ways and overlords have absolute power over all land dry and marsh, a group of orphaned boys ban together to survive the mean streets of Filon Bora's village. Being without a protector in the fortress's village is a hard life. Lawlessness abounds and the streets are a dangerous place for anyone to be let alone a child. For them being turned out to wander the village alone is more often than not a death sentence. Well if the child is a young boy at any rate. Girls most often get taken in, for the pleasure houses are always in need of fresh blood. Orphaned boys on the other hand are in less demand in those sorts of places, and so the majority of them end up roaming the streets. Karnin and his little gang are such discarded boys, and for them the future is bleak. All they have to look forward to is a life of squalor and an early death, but one day their fortunes change. Karnin catches the eye of a highly placed man looking for a boy with the wherewithal to do a few things for him on the sly. Their benefactor has more in mind though; he is looking to right a great wrong. The plot that he hatches sends Karnin and his followers on an adventure that forever alters their lives, and changes the futures of all those dwelling within the shadow of Filon Bora.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Stephenie Meyer’s first novel, Twilight, was published in 2005, it had an astounding reception, selling millions of copies. The three sequels that followed—New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn—became international bestsellers as well. The worldwide success of the movie adaptations further cemented the series as a cultural force on par with other popular franchises such as Harry Potter. But why is this? What is it about Twilight that makes it so appealing to people? And what does Twilight’s success reveal about transnational cultural trends? In The Twilight Saga: Exploring the Global Phenomenon, Claudia Bucciferro has assembled a collection of essays that examine the series from a variety of perspectives. The essays in this volume consider both the books and the movies, emphasizing the relationships among the texts, the audience, the entertainment industry, and other aspects of the multimillion-dollar franchise. Organized into five sections, the chapters offer a contextualization of the series’ appeal, explore different types of Twilight audiences, analyze the cultural referents associated with the main characters, and present new ideas regarding representations of gender, sex, class, and race. Concluding essays examine the saga’s influence, unveiling its links to newer workssuch as The Hunger Games, True Blood, and Fifty Shades of Grey. Making sense of how the popular franchise fits within larger contexts, this collection addresses Twilight from an interdisciplinary framework, including insights from history, philosophy, literature, sociology, fan studies, intercultural communication, film studies, and more. Featuring contributions by scholars from the United States, France, Spain, Chile, and Australia, this book emphasizes the international and intercultural relevance of the Twilight phenomenon. The collection is aimed at scholars and students of media and popular culture, but it will also appeal to general readers who are familiar with the series.

But when it comes to video games, which are inextricably linked to technological evolution, it is not so easy to predict which games will age well and stand the test of time. Uncharted has the feel of a classic grand adventure, with thrilling action and great dialogue. One thing is certain: few video game series have earned that label. Mixing a form inherited from the Hollywood pulp classics with great writing made the saga instantly enjoyable, thrilling and exciting. In addition to discovering the secrets of the creation of each title in the saga, you'll also be able to immerse yourself in its universe and discover its historical inspirations. A way to create your own adventure.

Book excerpt: "It was commonly accepted that judging a book by it’s cover was just about the rudest and un-wisest thing you could do. But that’s not going to stop you, is it? And that’s something I’ve always respected about you. If the ideas of the trials and tribulations of a pair of wizards travelling through time and space do nothing for you, then you’ve most likely already put this book down. To those who remain, may I just take a moment to introduce Kiko and Kara. Kiko was a bookish, kind (but slightly bizarre) human girl with a razor-sharp intellect and Kara was the kind of Half-Elf to punch me in the face if she heard me say anything bad about her, so I won’t be doing that. Both girls lived a life of magic and mystery on the thirteenth paralleled Earth, which was part of the Thirteenth parallel Universe; which is where this book is set."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover all the secrets and mechanics of the famous Japanese video game Dragon Quest ! This book looks back at the entire Dragon Quest saga, tells the story of the series' birth, retraces its history and deciphers its mechanics. In this book, the author shares us all his expertise and his passion in Japanese gaming to decipher the creation and the story of this saga and his creator, Yuji Horii. EXTRAIT Even with only limited knowledge of Japanese and somewhat difficult technical conditions, the story was very well told. This was perhaps what surprised players most. Dragon Quest V is a large family cycle of emotions, as transparent as an epic tale by Alexandre Dumas, the author of famous works such as The Three Musketeers. In the end, I was lucky that my first taste of the series was this excellent episode, since VI was far more extravagant, with its tales of parallel universes and heroes traveling on flying beds. A slightly puzzling game, but not without levity nor offbeat humor. One of the most emotional moments of Dragon Quest V is when we end up going back in time to change the past, thus saving the future. The time travel theme has been so often used in science fiction, particularly during the 1980s, that it should have left me impassive. It was not even the first time I had experienced it in a video game. But this adventure, with its simple graphics and persistent melodies, glanced lightly upon feelings that leave no one unmoved. “What would I have done differently if I could have changed things” is a very common concept used in fiction, from A Distant Neighborhood by Jirô Taniguchi to the Quantum Leap series. Well-told, it is so simple and so effective that it affects each and every one of us. - Nixotane, Sens Critique À PROPOS DE L'AUTEUR Daniel Andreyev is an author and journalist of Russian origin. His career in video game journalism began twenty years ago, during the golden years of video gaming, with Player One, Consoles + and Animeland, with a particular interest in Japan. Having spent some time on translation, he is now part of the New Games Journalism movement, which places the player at the heart of the video game experience. He produces the After Hate and Super Ciné Battle podcasts. He also trades memories with his friends in Gaijin Dash, the Gamekult show on Japanese video games. He is a fan of far too many things to list them all here. But when he is not writing, not watching a movie, not reading comics and graphic novels, not climbing mountains or exploring ruined buildings, he might be cooking, exercising or dreaming of one day owning a dog.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rewriting of Njáls saga concerns itself with the process which enables literary texts to cross cultures and endure history. Through six interrelated case studies, Jón Karl Helgason focuses on the reception of Njáls saga, the most distinguished of the Icelandic sagas, in Britain, the United States, Denmark, Norway and Iceland, between 1861 and 1945. The editions and translations in question claim to represent a medieval narrative to their audience, but Helgason emphasises how these texts simultaneously reflect the rewriters' contemporary ideas about race, culture, politics and poetics. Introducing the principles of comparative Translation Studies to the field of Medieval Literature, Helgason's book identifies the dialogue between literary (re)production and society.

The narrative type arose from the introduction of French narratives into the alien literary environment of Iceland and the acculturation of the import to indigenous literary traditions. The study focuses on the oldest Icelandic copies of three chansons de geste and four of the earliest indigenous romances, both types transmitted in an Icelandic codex from around 1300. The impact of the translated epic poems on the origin and development of the Icelandic romances was considerable, yet they have been largely neglected by scholars in favour of the courtly romances. This study attests the role played by the epic poems in the composition of romance in Iceland, which introduced the motifs of the aggressive female wooer and of Christian-heathen conflict.
