Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quest of Glory The Austrian guns had ceased with the early sunset, and the desolate city of Prague was silent, encompassed by the enemy and the hard, continuous cold of a Bohemian December: in the hall of Vladislav in the Hradcany, that ancient palace of ancient kings that rose above the town, several French officers wrapped in heavy cloaks were walking up and down, as they had done night after night since the dragging siege began. In the vast spaces of the huge pillarless hall with the high arched Gothic roof, bare walls and floor, imperfectly lit by a few low-placed lamps, their figures looked slight to insignificance, and the sound of their lowered voices was a mere murmur in the great frozen stillness. At one end of the hall rose a tall carved wooden throne and rows of benches divided from the main hall by a light railing; these, which had once been the seats of the King and nobility of Bohemia, were now decayed and broken, and behind the empty chair of state was thrust a Bourbon flag tied with the blue and white colours that the French carried in compliment to the Elector of Bavaria, whom they, for many intricate reasons, - some wise, and some foolish, and none just, - were seeking to place on the Austrian throne as Charles II. These officers, who were the unquestioning instruments of this policy of France, ceased talking presently and gathered round the degraded throne before which burnt a handful of charcoal over an iron tripod. We have added six more numbers to the files which our children and our children's children will look back upon some day, perhaps in amusement, perhaps in soft sorrow. For another six times we have repeated to our little world the fleeting joys, the momentary successes, the simple and awful little tragedies that make up the daily life Of our community and its people. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Full Glory of D'iantha But she cannot work out her destiny save through law and order. She needs man in all the glory of his acquired angelhood, with the earth in him suppressed, to hold her close, to protect her, to give her the joys of companionship, and also that which is his hardest task, to be willing for her to keep her immortal soul, all of which will make of this world a heaven so sweet and so beautiful that earth here below makes dim the promised delights of the beyond. It sometimes happens that true-mates do find each other. With the possibility of winning such a guerdon as this, why should not a young woman enter upon such a quest with all her heart and all her soul, turning to all points of the compass to watch for the coming of his blessed presence? Lilith and her beauty are a legend we would not be with out; she is the glowing mystery that lies back of the beginning of the race. Lilith without beauty would be life without meaning, stars Without light. Eve, we feel, must have been beautiful or that lovely lost garden east of the sun and West of the moon would not have evolved her as its crowning glory. Envious, creeping Wisdom gliding along the apple branch to drive out beauty, so that men might care only for knowledge, would not have found her worthy of his hate. Beauty is the shimmering, high answer to the deep hunger of mortals; beauty of living, beauty that is mystery and poetry and faith, beauty of line and color.
