Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

Book excerpt: For every real treasure, there's a map, a piece of paper that tells you exactly how to get to the good stuff. Here's the amazing part: you probably already have a copy of the treasure map that points you to God. This map that points you straight to Him probably sits on your bookshelf or by your bed.The step-by-step directions you need to find the greatest treasure ever are contained in a book that you probably already own. This book is the Bible. Think about it: If you had a map showing the location of buried jewels and gold, you would work hard to figure out how the map could lead you to that treasure. You would press your nose up close to the map and move your eyes from corner to corner to corner to corner. You would study the map. No, not exactly the kind of studying you do at school, but the intense attention you give to things you love and enjoy. When you poke your nose into God's map, the Bible, and study it, you will come to understand its biggest point?that you can know Jesus as your Savior and friend and enjoy the great life He has planned for you. God is the greatest treasure you can ever find, and He's given you a map to get to Him-an exciting map that you need to understand, trust, and follow. Do you want to find the really good stuff? Then let's go on a treasure hunt

Book excerpt: I have deep feelings for this guy, but he says I'm like a sister to him. What should I do?" "Why should a man still be expected to initiate romance?" "Isn't it okay to spend time together if we're just friends?" "If I never marry, will God take that desire away?" These are some of the many questions posed in letters to Elisabeth Elliot by readers of her bestselling book Passion and Purity. In this beautifully repackaged edition of Quest for Love, she responds with sound, biblical guidance, dusting off "antiquated" concepts such as commitment, integrity, honor, and servanthood, and showing how they still apply to dating and singleness today. Intertwined are hopeful true stories of discovering love through God's direction.

Book excerpt: • Gold-medal winner of the Nautilus Book Award for memoir (2020) • Gold-medal winner of the National Indie Excellence Award for memoir (2020) • Featured on Moms Don't Have Time to Read Books podcast. (2020) "A stirring memoir that beautifully and humorously captures the pain of unresolved loss.” — Kirkus Reviews The true story of a woman whose life is up-ended when she begins an armchair treasure hunt—a search for $10,000 worth of gold coins buried in New York City, of all places—with a man who, as she points out, is not her husband. In this eloquent, hilarious, sharply realized memoir, Sandra A. Miller grapples with the death of her difficult mother and the regret and confusion that so often accompanies middle age. In a very real way, Miller has spent her life hunting for buried treasure. As a child, she trained herself to find things: dropped hair clips, shiny bits of broken glass, discarded lighters. Looking to escape from her volatile parents and often-unhappy childhood, Miller found deeper meaning, and a good deal of hope, in each of these objects. Now an adult and facing the loss of her last living parent—her mother who is at once cold, difficult, and wildly funny—Miller finds herself, as she so often did as a little girl, pressed against a wall of her own longing. Her search for gold, which soon becomes an obsession, forces her to dredge up painful pieces of her past, confront the true source of her sorrow, and finally discover what it is she has been looking for all these years. "Trove is the treasure. It's the kind of story that gives you a new best friend in a narrator. Your get to travel with her on an emotional journey with laughs and tears. I am happy to be shut in with this wonderful story that has taken me to so many places." — Meredith Goldstein, advice columnist and entertainment reporter for The Boston Globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It started on a summer afternoon in 1795 when a young man named Daniel McGinnis found what appeared to be an old site on an island off the Acadian coast, a coastline fabled for the skullduggery of pirates. The notorious Captain Kidd was rumored to have left part of his treasure somewhere along here, and as McGinnis and two friends started to dig, they found what turned out to be an elaborately engineered shaft constructed of oak logs, nonindigenous coconut mats, and landfill that came to be known as the Money Pit. Ever since that summer day in 1795, the possibility of what might be hidden in the depths of a small island off the south coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, has made it the site of the world's longest, most expensive, and most perplexing treasure hunt. Author D'Arcy O'Connor recounts the fascinating stories and amazing discoveries of past and current treasure seekers who have sought Oak Island's fabled treasure for over two hundred years. It has baffled scientists and madmen, scholars and idiots, millionaires and get-rich-quick schemers, psychics, engineers, charlatans, and even a former president of the United States. The island has consumed the fortunes-and in some cases, the lives-of those who have obsessively set out to unlock its secret. Despite all their efforts, the mystery remains unsolved, and not a single dime of treasure has ever been recovered. The present-day search is an archaeological dig exceeding anything ever done anywhere for similar purposes, and it may well result in the discovery of one of the world's richest and most historically significant treasures. But this is also the story of individuals who have dedicated years of their lives to discover what was buried long ago beneath this strange island. They are driven by a lust for gold, by archaeological curiosity, and by their determination to outwit the engineer who was responsible for the Oak Island enigma.

Book excerpt: Forrest Fenn’s ‘Thrill of the Chase’ was the greatest treasure hunt of the modern-day era. ‘The Pearl Necklace’ tells the mostly true story of one family’s quest to recover the gold-laden chest. Supposedly the $2 million horde of gold and precious gemstones was found in 2020. This tale of adventure and intrigue casts serious doubt on the legitimacy of that discovery. In doing so, it reveals the solution to the hunt that has baffled thousands of searchers over the last 13 years. It also poses a number of questions. Was the hunt a cryptological masterpiece? Or was it merely an elaborate hoax to keep an aging gentleman amused in his later years? And was there a larger, more sinister back story to the Chase? All is revealed in The Pearl Necklace as well as the introduction of a new treasure quest to enthral the next generation of fortune seekers The Hunt for the Sacred Idol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there more to life? Is there more to me? Is it all worth it? What does it mean to be one with God, and what does that have to do with the mess and challenges of everyday life? These are some of the issues addressed in An Untold Story as it follows the mystical-heroic quest to find our true selves. In coming to a better understanding of what it is to be a hero and what it is to be a mystic, we come to a better understanding of what it is to be ourselves. The stories are connected. The classic hero's journey of myth and legend is at the heart of the mystical journey to life with God. And together they show the way to our true selves and our true stories. With the guidance of mystical theologian John of Ruusbroec and other teachers, and with help from many favorite heroic stories and characters, An Untold Story presents a path of spiritual formation that is at once epic and everyday, fantastical and practical, otherworldly and ordinary. This is a guide for any would-be mystic-hero longing for their own wondertale to no longer be an untold story.
