The piece was set during the Reconstruction period following the War Between the States, and the central character for the narrative was based on a direct descendant of Miles Stuart Ransom, the protagonist of The Queen's Captain. That short story was chosen for publication by a respected journal of Southern literature, and it was the first of my writings to be published. I still get a tingle up my spine when I remember it.The Ransom family continued to appear from time to time in my short stories, and the Will Ransom character in Jake's Revenge is the modern-day family member. In 2016, my brother, Steve, suggested that I use them as characters for a full-length historical novel. The Queen's Captain is the first in a series of books chronicling the lives and adventures of the Ransom family in the New World. Set during Queen Anne's War in 1710, the story introduces and follows Captain Miles Stuart Ransom, of the Royal Navy, as he recovers from battle wounds and makes the decision to seek his fortune in Colonial America.
