Book excerpt: This work, the ninth in a series of books about Maryland families, focuses on the Purdum families, primarily of Montgomery and Frederick Counties. Having early origins in the area, and being rather prolific, the Purdum families intermarried with many of those families found in the first eight books of his series, and some of the information presented there will be repeated here, rather than requiring the reader to move back and forth between the various volumes in the series. Following the custom of the earlier works in this series, the book begins with a look at the early history of the Maryland Colony and the formation of the counties. From there, it moves into early Purdum family records, including John Purdum (born before 1700), who appears to be the progenitor of virtually all of the Purdums thus far identified in the study. John had at least four children, one of whom was James Purdum (born about 1720). James had at least one son, and probably several other children, but the one that the author has identified is yet another John Purdum (born about 1739). Individual chapters focus on: John Purdum and his family of at least eleven children, Walter Purdum, the descendants of Joshua Purdum, and others. Some family members, not identified within the framework of the principal family study are also touched on. A bibliography of over 100 titles testifies to the wide range of sources used in this compilation, and a full-name index supplies over 4,500 names. This book is a must for anyone researching the Purdum surname in this area.

Book excerpt: In the most comprehensive biographical study of John Purdue (c. 1802-1876) to date, Purdue's great-great-grandniece describes her travels to the diverse places where Purdue had lived in order to learn about the mysterious relative known in her family as Uncle. Using fresh, unpublished source materials-including Purdue's personal correspondence, business ledgers, and the family oral histories-the author examines Purdue's beginning among illiterate, immigrant, Pennsylvania mountain-hollow folks. Uncle challenges a commonly held belief that Purdue was a cold-hearted business mogul. Instead the author shows Purdue as a human being and as a generous family man with a visionary nature.

Book excerpt: Preston Browning Jr. entered the world in 1929, a few months before the Crash and the onset of the Great Depression. In Culpeper, Virginia, Browning grew up amid the pervasive poverty of the times where he recalls being labeled by his father as the worlds worst grouch, led in song by Miss Lizzy Lovellwho banged on the piano at the local Episcopal church, and seated astride a cow who needed a lot of convincing to take him for a ride around the pasture beyond his house. With humor and exceptional detail, Browning shares a lively memoir that focuses on his coming-of-age journey and subsequent experiences in the rural South during the 1930s and 1940s, providing a compelling glimpse into how his family and others helped shape his emerging sense of self, his convictions, and his character. While providing snippets about the era and sketches of more than twenty relatives and ancestors that include an amusing retelling about his Uncle Sweets experiences at a hoochie-coochie show, Browning details the fascinating legacy of his Southern upbringing during a time when a struggle for racial, economic, and social justice prevailed in America. In this inspiring memoir, a Southerner reminisces about small-town Virginia before, during, and after the Great Depression through entertaining stories about his unconventional ancestors, his immediate family, and his own experiences.

Book excerpt: "Under the English rule of primogeniture...second sons and others who could not afford to pay their passage, sold themselves into virtual slavery as indentured servants...agreeing to serve their master for at least four years and often six or seven, on the plantations in the West Indies, or on the mainland in Maryland or Virginia. Upon completion of servitude and grant of freedom, the servant typically received a grant of fifty acres of land, a suit of clothes, corn for a year, and the tools of his trade. Millions of us are descended from these hardy adventurers." And so begins William Hurley's twenty-eighth quest to document the lineage of another local name, the Baker families, primarily of Montgomery and Frederick Counties. From Abednego Baker c. 1754, through his son Larkin Baker, his children and grandchildren, the author identifies hundreds of direct name descendants up to the present time. References to various collateral family surnames include Brandenburg, Burdette, Burroughs, Cromwell, Davis, Dorsey, Duvall, Hyatt, King, Kinsey, Mullineaux, Purdum, Riggs, Warthen, and Watkins. The second section of the book that deals with the Frederick County Bakers begins with Frederick Baker and his nine children and concludes with a chapter titled Baker Family Members of Frederick County. The volume also includes a chapter on miscellaneous Baker family members with origins other than Maryland. Mr. Hurley's signature solid research and easy to follow presentation is repeated in The Baker Families, as is an impressive bibliography and an extensive full name index.
