Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Schools in the United States of America In modern times the ideas of popular Education have Sprung up as necessities. But these ideas, to a great ex tent, have been transplanted from the countries of Europe to the United States of America, hardly differently from the manner in which the Secondary School was introdu ced, the history of which extends back to the beginning of civilization in Europe. Yet the schools of Europe have gradually assumed a character, so peculiar to the different nations, that it is easy to know the German from the French or English institution. And still, though it is true that the nature of educational institutions is certainly determined to a great extent by nationality, social and political interests and the standard of civilization which has been reached by each particular nation, nevertheless the achievements of one nation in the department of education like the re searches of science, cannot long remain unknown to others. And for that reason, despite their national peculiarities, we find that the schools of all European countries have much in common, and that the fundamental ideas pervading those of England, France, Germany and Switzerland are at the present day much the same. That the results' which are achieved in the different countries are so dissimilar is ow ing to two things: Knowledge or ignorance of the best methods and the skill or deficiency of the instructors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of the Public School System of the United States Our national greatness, and the permanence of our American government, are to a great extent founded in our system of public schools. In these schools pupils learn patriotism and obedience to constituted authority to an extent untaught and unpracticed in many homes. The acquirement of knowledge is ofiered in a system which only enormous funds and the painstaking endeav ors of selected instructors could make possible. As the State furnishes so it benefits. The child of today is the statesman of tomorrow. Competence is so general that no man is considered unreplaceable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free School System of the United States The aim of the following pages is to supply for English Educational reformers the means of insight into the operation of the American system of Elementary Education. If it should be objected that the social conditions of England and the United States lie at extremes which render comparisons useless or fallacious, it may be replied, that successive Governments have recognised the policy of examining the educational systems of various countries, with the view of adopting for our own use the best methods found anywhere in practice. Moreover, international comparisons are now forced upon all countries by international competition. That the experience of the United States furnishes valuable lessons for England the writer trusts will be made clear. Notwithstanding the differences which exist in the circumstances of the two countries, the type of the inhabitants is. essentially the same. Nor are the ideas to which Americans attach the greatest importance in education foreign to England. Local self-government is not the conception of American politicians. The people of the United States borrowed the principle from England, and making it the foundation of their Education system, demonstrated the advantages of its application in such a manner. Neither is free education an exotic in England. Of all English schools the free schools have been the most popular. By making education universally free the Americans have made the common school the most popular and successful institution of that country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reorganization of the Public School System A little more than two decades ago Charles W. Eliot, convinced that the age at which the college graduate completes his course and begins supporting himself was too high, put the question, Can school programs be shortened and enriched? This query precipitated a discussion which, while ranging over the entire field of educational theory and practice, centered particularly upon the purpose and place of the common school, the high school, and the institutions of higher learning. This critical examination of the principal parts of the system has set in clearer light their characteristics and has led to the belief that a proper regard for the distinctive functions of each makes imperative a reorganization, or at least a readjustment, of the chief divisions of the system with respect to articulation, to internal organization, to grade span, and to defined purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States The object aimed at in the preparation of this book was to produce a systematic, brief, clear, and authentic history of the United States for the use of schools. The plan is simple. N o arbitrary division into historical periods and eras is employed, but each chapter embraces associated events and forms a natural link in an unbroken chain. A strictly chronological order of arrangement is followed, whereby occurrences are shown in their true relation to one another, and to their causes. The most important dates are made prominent in the text by a peculiar type. A condensed record of general progress is placed at the end of almost every chapter, designed to interest the pupil in the civil and domestic character of the country, and in employments, institutions, and ideas not directly connected with wars, politics, or national legislation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Schools and the War The following pages represent an endeavor to study the effects of the war upon schools in other countries and especi ally in the United States. The first four chapters deal with some specific problems of the public schools in connection with the war and were written when the great world con ict was still going on. They show the revolutionary changes which the public schools have made in adjusting themselves to the needs of the war, and suggest the unmistakable tendencies of our educational reconstruction which is yet to come. The last two chapters were written whentthe great war had just come to an end. In them the author has tried to show, in the light of the experience of many school systems in this country, how American public education can be reorganized in order to meet the needs of the coming new world order. It is the author's hope that they may be of some value to the general discussion of educational reform. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic School System in the United States: Its Principles, Origin, and Establishment It has been the aim of the author in the present volume to exhibit a coherent view of the Catholic school movement in the United States from the earliest times down to the great immigration period, which began about the year 1840. The characteristic feature of the movement during all this time was the steady effort to build and equip schools, provide teachers, and overcome fundamental difficulties both from within and from without. It was the period of the establishment of the schools. There was comparatively little in the way of academic progress. This came later on, when the influx of religious Orders from Europe and their rapid growth provided a greater supply of teachers, and thus made it possible to give to the teacher a better training. It is the intention to present a study of this second period, that of the development of the schools, in another volume. The educational work of Bishop Hughes obviously belongs to the first of these two periods rather than to the second, and for this reason, notwithstanding some disturbance of the chronological order, it is dealt with in the present volume. The first four chapters of the work, together with the Introduction, appeared in successive numbers of "The Catholic University Bulletin" during 1906-7.
