Download or read book Brothers, Sisters, and Special Needs written by Debra J. Lobato and published by Brookes Publishing Company. This book was released on 1990 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children learn some of their earliest lessons about sharing, competition, and compromise through negotiations with their siblings. As early as age 3, children can recognize special problems their brother or sister has due to a developmental disability or chronic illness. "Brothers, sisters, and special needs" shows professionals and parents how they can help a child's understanding of disability or chronic illness develop in a healthy, adaptive direction during the preschool and elementary school years. This explicit curriculum and activity guide, designed especially for children ages 3 to 8, sets up a series of fun work-shops to help siblings get to know their own personal strengths, recognize positive characteristics of their handicapped brother or sister and other family members, and learn ways of coping constructively with stressful family events. "Brothers, sisters, and special needs" will be of interest to professionals, early interventionists, parents, social workers, psychologists, and pediatricians

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the memory and work of Lisa Capps, this volume is a forum for scholars and practitioners interested in the typical and atypical development of persons with autism. Each chapter is focused on theoretical considerations and the empirical evidence regarding a specific aspect of functioning, but common themes of development are considered throughout. Within this framework, the contributors provide a detailed and comprehensive account of the development of persons with autism. The book is divided into four sections: (1) Developmental, Neurobiological, Genetic, and Family Considerations; (2) Attention and Perception; (3) Cognition, Theory of Mind, and Executive Functioning; and (4) Social and Adaptive Behaviors. With the consideration of this broad range of topics, this volume is both a state-of-the-art resource about autism and a unique contribution to the study of development. It will be of interest to researchers and care providers from several domains, including psychology, psychiatry, social work, developmental psychology, and education. This volume can be used as a text in graduate and advanced undergraduate courses, and as a resource in applied settings.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study1 examined whether siblings of children with autism were at risk for experiencing psychosocial adjustment difficulties, and whether severity of the child's disability and siblings' knowledge of autism were related to siblings' adjustment. This study also systematically evaluated the effectiveness of a sibling support group. Participants included 31 siblings of children with autism, between ages 6 to 16, that received group intervention. Results indicated that these siblings exhibited significantly more internalizing problems than average, but did not show more externalizing behaviours, total problem behaviours, or poor self-concepts. In this group, there were no significant relationships between severity of the child's disability and siblings' knowledge of autism with siblings' psychosocial adjustment. However, siblings did significantly improve their self-concepts and knowledge of autism from the beginning to the end of the sibling support group. Clinical implications are discussed and directions for future research are presented. 1These data were collected as part of the ongoing study, "Sibling Groups for Siblings of Autistic Children" of the Treatment, Research and Education for Autism and Developmental Disorders (TRE-ADD) Program at Thistletown Regional Centre, investigated by Dr. Adrienne Perry and her collaborators.

Download or read book Adjustment in Siblings of Children with Disabilities written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic illness and developmental disabilities affect a significant portion of the pediatric population. For each child who suffers with a disabling condition there are frequently one or more brothers and sisters in the home who are also affected by their sibling's illness. Previous research has provided equivocal results regarding how a child's emotional adjustment is impacted by the presence of a disabled sibling, although the bulk of research points to a sibling of a disabled child being at an increased risk for negative adjustment. This study investigated the adjustment of 62 siblings of children with disabilities. The diagnosis of the children with disabilities included (a) Mental Retardation, (b) Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorder, (c) physical illness, and (d) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/Learning Disabled. Using archival data collected through a Sibling Support Program, analysis was conducted on subjects' scores on the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), and the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC). Results were different than what was expected and showed either no differences in adjustment or positive findings.Positive findings were indicated in that, siblings of children with disabilities showed significantly better global self-worth, higher perceptions of their academic abilities, and a more positive view of their physical appearance, when compared to normative samples. These findings were especially true for girls. It was also determined that female siblings of children with disabilities reported less anxiety than normative samples.Negative adjustment was indicated in that a higher percentage of subjects than normally expected reported clinically significant depressive symptoms and boys showed higher levels of worry/oversensitivity on the RCMAS.Although no difference in adjustment scores was evident when comparisons were made between siblings of children with Autism/PDD and other disability groups, when compared to normative samples, siblings of Autistic and physically ill children scored higher in the areas of Scholastic Competence and Physical Appearance. Additionally in most areas of adjustment birth order did not appear to affect sibling scores, however within group analysis revealed that older siblings of disabled children fared better than younger siblings of disabled children in the areas of Global Self-Worth and Physical Appearance.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This paper reviews the body of literature examining the well-being and adjustment of siblings of children with developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Results within this body of research are mixed. Although a few studies have concluded there are no significant differences between siblings of children with developmental disorders and siblings of typically developing children, the majority of the research indicates that this sibling population is at increased risk of behavioral, psychological, and emotional problems. Specific factors influencing siblings' well-being and coping have been identified. Included in these factors are static variables such as family size, birth order, and socioeconomic status, as well as dynamic variables such as quality of family engagement, parental stress and well-being, and quality of peer relationships. Each sibling in this population expresses varying attitudes and has a wide range of life experiences. Nevertheless, there are common factors that seem to influence their individual experiences. Keywords: sibling, developmental disability, ASD, well-being, adjustment, coping.

Book excerpt: Rehabilitation practitioners face the difficult task of helping clients adjust to chronic illness or disability. This can be a long and trying process for both practitioner and client. With this handbook, however, practitioners and students can gain a wealth of insight into the critical issues clients face daily. This book presents the dominant theories, models, and evidence-based techniques necessary to help the psychosocial adjustment of chronically ill or disabled persons. Each chapter is written from an evidence-based practice (EBP) perspective, and explores how important issues (i.e., social stigma, social support, sexuality, family, depression, and substance abuse) affect persons adjusting to chronic illness and disability. Key features include: A review of psychopharmacological treatment options for depression, anxiety, and other disorders coinciding with rehabilitation The effect of rehabilitation on the family, including key family intervention strategies Strategies for using positive psychology and motivational interviewing in rehabilitation Multiculturalism and the effect of culture on the adjustment process Ancillary materials including an instructor's manual with a syllabus, examination items, PowerPoint presentation, and answers to class exercises By incorporating research-based knowledge into clinical rehabilitation practice, health care professionals can ensure that people with chronic illness and disability receive only the best treatment.
