Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychic Health of Jesus The task of coming to a newer and fresher understanding of Jesus is the bounden duty of all confessed Christians, whether orthodox or liberal, theological or lay. The present study has been made with this one thought in mind. From the more strictly scientific point of view this study aims at two things: 1) a comprehensive survey of the pathographic judg ment against Jesus in both its early and its developed stages; a determination of the correctness of the pathographic posi tion as based upon a sifting of the New Testament sources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind Science of Christ Jesus: A Treatise on Christian Psychology Showing the Power of Suggestion and Revealing the Secrets of Mental and Spiritual Healing The teachings herein contained are in harmony with the Bible, with scientific investigations and with every day practical experience. No man needs so much to realize these truths, as does the true minister of Jesus Christ. Multitudes of people, though earnestly desiring to know the real truth of God, are so dissatisfied with the sermons which they hear when they at tend regular church services, that they refuse to identify themselves with any of the orthodox de nominations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Aspects of the Life of Jesus: From the Psychological and Psycho-Analytic Point of View IT is not the object of this work to repeat what has already been said, and well said, by others. It makes no attempt to follow that fashion of modern erudition which delights in reopening questions that have been settled in order to settle them again with a great parade of impressive citations. Nor does it attempt either to raise or to solve all the theological, critical, or practical problems which the Life of Jesus presents. Its aim is at once more modest and quite different. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus, the Christ, in the Light of Psychology, Vol. 2 These phenomena raise the question which was first elevated to importance by the school Of Durkheim, viz., as to whether in such phenomena the individual or the groupleads. Very many phenomena connected with the various Mana theories now seem to indicate that the most primitive phenomenon is a sense Of one great unifying principle which springs out Of the collective soul when tribes celebrate together, in which case the soul Of the individual is completely submerged in that of his community. Messianic phenomena, however, would seem to indicate that it is the individual that in uences the group. He strives to take into himself the social mind Of his community, and mould and guide it, for without him the group would be blind and dumb. The group makes the Messiah possible, but in him scattered rays, too dim to be otherwise e ective, are focussed, and although his power is wholly psychic, it may become hardly less complete than that Of the soul over the body. In Messianity we have, then, the most per feet Of all paradigms Of the relation between leader and led. Each creates and depends upon the other. In no psychologically essential aspect did Scriptural Messianity di er from that Of a more primitive type. In the former, however, the phenomena are far more clearly wrought out and more adequately recorded, and especially the e orts Of the Messiah are given a higher spiritual interpretation, which rises far above the material or political sphere in which the cruder forms Of Messianism find their field Of interpretation. Wallis sums up by saying, The social seems merely a polarity or a dimension in which personality finds meaning and by which it is conditioned in its expres sion. Social in uences are responsible for the ability Of the leader to grasp their meaning, and each is equally creative Of the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People living with mental health challenges are not excluded from God’s love or even the fullness of life promised by Jesus. Unfortunately, this hope is often lost amid the well-meaning labels and medical treatments that dominate the mental health field today. In Finding Jesus in the Storm, John Swinton makes the case for reclaiming that hope by changing the way we talk about mental health and remembering that, above all, people are people, regardless of how unconventionally they experience life. Finding Jesus in the Storm is a call for the church to be an epicenter of compassion for those experiencing depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and related difficulties. That means breaking free of the assumptions that often accompany these diagnoses, allowing for the possibility that people living within unconventional states of mental health might experience God in unique ways that are real and perhaps even revelatory. In each chapter, Swinton gives voice to those experiencing the mental health challenges in question, so readers can see firsthand what God’s healing looks like in a variety of circumstances. The result is a book about people instead of symptoms, description instead of diagnosis, and lifegiving hope for everyone in the midst of the storm.

Theories as to collective betterment are futile, if the personal Will to righteousness is wanting. Spiritual forces in the personal soul are the dynamic of progress. The Religion of Jesus is the reality of life. If a sense of unreality haunts men with regard to religion, Jesus is misunderstood or misrepresented. There is nothing remote, occult or unreal about Him. He is vital. He strips religion of everything artificial and reveals life. He is at once simpler and deeper than all expositions concerning Him. Book excerpt: "It is manifestly evident that religion is not always led to mental health." I remember reading this statement from the book, The Psychology of Christian Personality by Ernest Ligon in the early 1960s. I was struck by it, because as a child growing up, I was told just the opposite. Subsequent empirical evidence has shown that Ligon was correct, but why? Religion is supposed to change people. Where was the disconnect? Does religion change people, or maybe do people change religion? In various ways, this statement has been a source of direction and study for me over my forty plus years in teaching and counseling. This book explores these questions and possible answers in light of mental health and the integration of Psychology and Religion.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Consciousness of Jesus Christ that the evangel was uttered, but, rather, that men should receive Christ and live into his conscious being, as he in the house of his humanity lived into the con scious life of the Father. A too great ex bibit of the detail of the earthly walk of Jesus would have defeated the exclusive ends of that which was written that, read ing, we might believe, and that, believing, we might be saved. A strictly scientific study of the consciousness of Jesus would fall short of the ends at which we aim. Every thoughtful student of modern-day theological literature has noted the too fre quent absence of both the spirit and the letter Of subjective inquiry from the methods of criticism. The critics have contented themselves with examining the aspects of the Old and New Testament Scriptures rather than looking deeply into the spirit and pur pose of their writers. Stress is laid upon his torical accidents, textual peculiarities and difficulties, rather than upon the tremendous facts symbolized by, and latent in, the writ ings, whose peculiarities and difficulties are.
