Down to the sixteenth century, this translation had almost the honours of an original. The Latin is pre-eminent as being the first version that was made in the atmosphere and light of the Christian faith. It was translated from the Greek alone, and it has no immediate contact with the Hebrew. Distant though it is from the original by a second remove, mechanical as it seems when verbally scanned, it has nevertheless within it a spring of emotion which is original in itself, radiating the warmth of primitive Christianity.
