Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arno C. Gaebelein's commentary on the Biblical prophet Ezekiel remains an authoritative and useful analysis of a pivotal figure in the Old Testament. The author accounts for Ezekiel's life in terms of the prophesies he made. Between the prophetic words of the subject, Gaebelein makes but one division: the destruction of Jerusalem. Throughout his accounts, Gaebelein offers the reader an in-depth discussion of the prophesies made by Ezekiel, particularly those concerning the emergence of a formal Jewish nation. It is uncommon in the modern day for the Book of Ezekiel to receive much reading or quotation by church pastors or preachers. There is thus a refreshing air of redress to Gaebelein's commentary, as it brings aspects of the Biblical lore uncommonly studied by believers to the fore. Gaebelein's close reading of the text brings certain insights of Ezekiel's story to light - subtleties which could easy pass even the experienced Bible reader by. Although a theologian, the author is keen to express his analyses in accessible language. Treading a line between the devotional and the academic, Gaebelein is keen to appeal to a range of readers - formal students in the university and the seminary, as well as the general Christian audience, will find satisfaction in this book. A Methodist minister in the 19th century, Arno C. Gaebelein was one of the most prominent figures of his denomination during the early 20th century. Forging links between Christians and Jews, the author successfully encouraged a strengthening of relations between the creeds. He did however disagree with Zionism, believing it to be an incorrect representation of Israel's restoration.

It has been stated by some that this is not the original name of the prophet, but his official title, which he adopted on account of his ministry among the people. Very interesting on this controverted point is the statement of a rabbinical com ment. The declaration is made that the prophets of God received their significant names, so closely linked with and expressive Of the character of their messages, from above and not according to the will of their earthly parents. God called them to their work and had them named accordingly before they ever entered upon their Offices as prophets. We believe this may be correct, especially in View of Jeremiah i:5. He was a prominent teacher and conference speaker. He was also the father of educator and philosopher of Christian education Frank E. Gaebelein. In the Nov-Dec 1896 issue of "Our Hope" one of the best statements of Hebrew Christians (Messianic Jews) was written under the heading, The Principles of the Hope of Israel Moment. "The Hope of Israel Movement aims to bring the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to His brethren according to the flesh. We hold that Scriptural - not Talmudic or Rabbinical, still less Reformed - Judaism is as much as divine revelation as Christianity. The canon of the New Testament has no higher Dicine authorith than has that of the Old. Neither is complete without the other. Salvation is from the Jews, John iv:22. And the gospel is "to the Jew first," Rom. i:18. The Jew is not a Gentile. The term "proselyte," therefore, can never apply to the Jew. The promice of God are Israel's Rom. ix:4, 5. Gentile believers are the real "proselytes," once far off, now made nigh, Eph. Ii:12, 13. The root of God's good olive tree, Israel, bears us; not we the root, Rom. xi:17, 18. To "proselyte" the Jew, then, is to ignore and to reverse the Divine order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the opening verses of the Book, which bears the name of the prophet Ezekiel, we learn that he was the son of Buzi the priest, and belonged consequently to the much honored Zadok family. That he knew the nobility of Jerusalem well and was intimate with them may be indirectly learned from the eleventh chapter. Rabbinical tradition identifies Buzi (which means "contempt") with Jeremiah and makes him a son of that prophet. There is, however, no positive evidence for this. Eleven years before the complete ruin of the city and the temple was effected by the King of Babylon, Ezekiel was carried away into the captivity. This deportation is recorded in 2 Kings xxiv:14. "And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valor, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths, none remained save the poorest sort of the people of the land." Before Ezekiel with the princes and the mighty men were taken into captivity, others had been removed to Babylon, notably Daniel and his three companions. This was in fulfillment of Isaiah xxxiv:6-7. Ezekiel must have known Daniel personally. His name is found three times in this book (chapters xiv:14, 20; xxviii:3).
