This book was released on 2009-09-14 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Led by Theodore Roosevelt, the Progressive Party made the 1912 campaign a passionate contest for the soul of the American people. Promoting an ambitious program of economic, social, and political reform-"New Nationalism"-that posed profound challenges to constitutional government, TR and his Progressive supporters provoked an extraordinary debate about the future of the country. Sidney Milkis revisits this emotionally charged contest to show how a party seemingly consumed by its leader's ambition dominated the election and left an enduring legacy that set in motion the rise of mass democracy and the expansion of national administrative power. Milkis depicts the Progressive Party as a collective enterprise of activists, spearheaded by TR, who pursued a program of reform dedicated to direct democracy and social justice and a balance between rights and civic duty. These reformers hoped to create a new concept of citizenship that would fulfill the lofty aspirations of "we the people" in a quest for a "more perfect union"-a quest hampered by fierce infighting over civil rights and antitrust policy. Milkis shows that the Progressive campaign aroused not just an important debate over reforms but also a battle for the very meaning of Progressivism. He describes how Roosevelt gave focus to the party with his dedication to "pure democracy"-even shoehorning judicial recall into his professed "true conservative" stance. Although this pledge to make the American people "masters of their Constitution" provoked considerable controversy, Milkis contends that the Progressives were not all that far removed from the more nationally minded of the Founders. As Milkis reveals, the party's faith in a more plebiscitary form of democracy would ultimately rob it of the very organization it needed in order to survive after Roosevelt. Yet the Progressive Party's program of social reform and "direct democracy" has reverberated through American politics-especially in 2008, with Barack Obama appealing to similar instincts. By probing the deep historical roots of contemporary developments in American politics, his book shows that Progressivism continues to shape American politics a century later.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume tells the story of the Progressive Party from 1912 to 1916. It was a political party created by a split in the Republican Party in the presidential election of 1912. It was formed by Theodore Roosevelt when he lost the Republican nomination to William Howard Taft and pulled his delegates out of the convention. The party is colloquially also known as the Bull Moose Party, after the party's emblem and after Roosevelt's boast that he was "as strong as a bull moose". Though the author, Amos Pinchot (1872-1944), was a member of Roosevelt's inner circle during the Bull Moose campaign of 1912, Amos exasperated the former president with his moralistic criticism of the role of big business in the party, including his criticism of the party chairman, George W. Perkins, who was a leading industrialist and sat on the board of U.S. Steel. Pinchot ultimately joined the Democratic Party, defended the rights of workers, and became acquainted with leftist intellectuals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Progressive Party, 1912-1916 As a glance at the footnotes for the Biographical Introduction will indicate, the great bulk of my information comes from two sources manuscript material and the personal recollections of people who knew Amos Pinchot. My most important source has been the Amos Pinchot Papers, which are in the Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. Here are deposited carbon copies of his letters, letters to him, drafts of books and articles, memoranda, rough notes, and most of his published material. Second in impor tance for my purposes have been the Gifford Pinchot Papers, that huge repository of material that is also in the Library of Congress. In addition, I have used the lane Addams Papers, the Ray Stannard Baker Papers, the Albert J. Beveridge Papers, the Harold L. Ickes Papers, the Theodore Roosevelt Papers, the Woodrow Wilson Papers, the William Allen White Papers, and the Robert Woolley Papers, all at the Library of Congress. I have also used the William Kent Papers at Yale University. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
