Book excerpt: Understanding and utilizing the interactions between environment and nanoscale materials is a new way to resolve the increasingly challenging environmental issues we are facing and will continue to face. Environanotechnology is the nanoscale technology developed for monitoring the quality of the environment, treating water and wastewater, as well as controlling air pollutants. Therefore, the applications of nanotechnology in environmental engineering have been of great interest to many fields and consequently a fair amount of research on the use of nanoscale materials for dealing with environmental issues has been conducted. The aim of this book is to report on the results recently achieved in different countries. It provides useful technological information for environmental scientists and will assist them in creating cost-effective nanotechnologies to solve critical environmental problems, including those associated with energy production. - Presents research results from a number of countries with various nanotechnologies in multidisciplinary environmental engineering fields - Gives a solid introduction to the basic theories needed for understanding how environanotechnologies can be developed cost-effectively, and when they should be applied in a responsible manner - Includes worked examples that put environmental problems in context to show the actual connections between nanotechnology and environmental engineering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are happy to introduce the Handbook of Charcoal-Making, a comprehensive survey written by a competent expert with international experience. The book was prepared by the Commission of the European Communities in the frame of its R + D programme on biomass. In the European Community today the biomass option is only little developed: a huge resource is waiting for use. Actually, there is ample scope for biomass utilisation as it bears promise in some of the vital sectors of modern society. Development of indigenous and renewable energy sources, creation of new employment, recycling of wastes and improvement of the environment, restructuring of European agriculture, development of the Third World, they are all concerned. It is important to note that the exploitation of the biomass resource is largely related to its conversion into a marketable product. However, as many of the conversion technologies are not yet well established or need improvement, R + D is more than ever the critical pathway to get access to the benefits of biomass utilisation. In the European Communities I R + D programme, thermal conversion of biomass is developed with priority. Gasification as well as pyrolysis development projects are being supported by the Commission in European industry and universities. Pyrolysis is particularly attractive because the conversion products charcoal and pyrolytic oil are very convenient in use, technologies are relatively simple and projected pay-back times favourable. -v- Charcoal making is just the simplest and oldest form of pyrolysis.

Book excerpt: Smart Food Industry: The Blockchain for Sustainable Engineering, Volume II - Current Status, Future Foods, and Global Issues reviews the literature and scientific frameworks to present a kind of sustainability compass. Disruptive approaches around potential sustainable foods are also widely investigated in order to be an alternative route for the industrial future. Thus, this book proposes new concepts and strategies to face future sustainability challenges that are on the horizon and can impact the next generation of foods. Divided into three parts, this book discusses the (i) status of sustainable food industry, (ii) next generation and future technology for sustainable foods, and (iii) policy, social, economic, and environmental aspects in food industries. Given the book's breadth, it provides readers with an invaluable reference resource for students, researchers, graduates, and professionals, in general, who wish to gain knowledge about the engineering and food processing area so as to achieve sustainable food production.
