Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bank Liquidity Creation and Financial Crises delivers a consistent, logical presentation of bank liquidity creation and addresses questions of research and policy interest that can be easily understood by readers with no advanced or specialized industry knowledge. Authors Allen Berger and Christa Bouwman examine ways to measure bank liquidity creation, how much liquidity banks create in different countries, the effects of monetary policy (including interest rate policy, lender of last resort, and quantitative easing), the effects of capital, the effects of regulatory interventions, the effects of bailouts, and much more. They also analyze bank liquidity creation in the US over the past three decades during both normal times and financial crises. Narrowing the gap between the "academic world" (focused on theories) and the "practitioner world" (dedicated to solving real-world problems), this book is a helpful new tool for evaluating a bank’s performance over time and comparing it to its peer group. Explains that bank liquidity creation is a more comprehensive measure of a bank’s output than traditional measures and can also be used to measure bank liquidity Describes how high levels of bank liquidity creation may cause or predict future financial crises Addresses questions of research and policy interest related to bank liquidity creation around the world and provides links to websites with data and other materials to address these questions Includes such hot-button topics as the effects of monetary policy (including interest rate policy, lender of last resort, and quantitative easing), the effects of capital, the effects of regulatory interventions, and the effects of bailouts

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the evolution of bank funding structures in the run up to the global financial crisis and studies the implications for financial stability, exploiting a bank-level dataset that covers about 11,000 banks in the U.S. and Europe during 2001?09. The results show that banks with weaker structural liquidity and higher leverage in the pre-crisis period were more likely to fail afterward. The likelihood of bank failure also increases with bank risk-taking. In the cross-section, the smaller domestically-oriented banks were relatively more vulnerable to liquidity risk, while the large cross-border banks were more susceptible to solvency risk due to excessive leverage. The results support the proposed Basel III regulations on structural liquidity and leverage, but suggest that emphasis should be placed on the latter, particularly for the systemically-important institutions. Macroeconomic and monetary conditions are also shown to be related with the likelihood of bank failure, providing a case for the introduction of a macro-prudential approach to banking regulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent turmoil on financial markets has made evident the importance of efficient liquidity risk management for the stability of banks. The measurement and management of liquidity risk must take into account economic factors such as the impact area, the timeframe of the analysis, the origin and the economic scenario in which the risk becomes manifest. Basel III, among other things, has introduced harmonized international minimum requirements and has developed global liquidity standards and supervisory monitoring procedures. The short book analyses the economic impact of the new regulation on profitability, on assets composition and business mix, on liabilities structure and replacement effects on banking and financial products.

Book excerpt: In general, the distribution made by the commercial banks for their resources to the various aspects of usage, is governed by two considerations:The first consideration is the profitability, as when the commercial banks take the form of special projects, they aim from the conduct of their business to make profits for their owners and shareholders. The commercial banks get their interests from the benefits they obtain as a return for their loans and investments. The achievement of profit remains a point of consideration for the single bank, even if the banking system is composed of a number of banks which compete with each other in conducting the ordinary banking business, as although the achievement of the profits is not the goal of the banking system in its entirety, the ability of the single bank to make profits is inevitably under consideration by the authorities governing the banks in the field of assessing its efficiency in practicing the banking activity, compared to the other banks. The profitability is not the only consideration that governs the banks in selecting their assets and directing their policy, as there is the liquidity consideration, which is very important. It is the fundamental problem in the management of commercial banks.the book includes the management of liquidity in deposit banks , and the impact of the liquidity problem on the financing of economic development .the book also includes a solution that serves the interest of the national economy as well as the interest of the bank

Book excerpt: This book discusses the risks and opportunities that arise in Emerging Asia given the context of a new environment in global liquidity and capital flows. It elaborates on the need to ensure financial and overall economic stability in the region through improved financial regulation and other policy measures to minimize the emergent risks. "Managing Elevated Risk: Global Liquidity, Capital Flows, and Macroprudential Policy—An Asian Perspective" also explores the range of policy options that may be deployed to address the impact of global liquidity on domestic financial and socio-economic conditions including income inequality. The book is primarily aimed at policy makers, financial market regulators and supervisory agencies to help them improve national regulatory systems and to promote harmonization of national regulations and practices in line with global standards. Scholars and researchers will also gain important information and knowledge about the overall impacts of changing global liquidity from the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the fall in overall productivity growth in the United States and other developed countries related to the rising share of the service sectors in the economy? Since services represent well over half of the U.S. gross national product, it is also important to ask whether these sectors have had a slow rate of growth, as this would act as a major drag on the productivity growth of the overall economy and on its competitive performance. In this timely volume, leading experts from government and academia argue that faulty statistics have prevented a clear understanding of these issues.

Book excerpt: A solid and stable financial sector is essential to any functioning national economy and to ensuring balanced liquidity within the economy. Appropriate liquidity management is a de facto condition of price and foreign exchange control, stability, and economic growth. Despite establishing regulatory agencies and monetary policies, Nigeria has actually been suffering excess liquidity for a period of some time. There is a basic knowledge gap in the causes and nature of this feature of the economy, and the likely institutional deficiencies. Most seriously, there is severe lack of reliable national economic data and statistics, a problem that is hampering all aspects of economic planning and growth. This book aims to fill these gaps.
