Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Volcanism The following chapters on phases Of the problem Of volcanism were prepared for the course Of Silliman Lectures at Yale University for the year 1914, and represent the lectures as they were then given, with slight elaboration in some parts. They were intended both for students Of geology and for others who, while not having made a Special study of the earth, are interested in its history and in theories respecting its origin and the possible causes Of volcanic activity at or near its surface. For this reason the attempt was made to avoid, as far as possible, the use of somewhat technical terms; and when their use seemed unavoidable, they were generally defined, at the risk Of making the treat ment appear elementary. It seemed desirable also to reduce the problem to its simplest elements, and to attempt to trace each back to its fundamental basis, or to express it in terms Of elemental principles. It is hoped that in this manner the discussion may appeal to a wider range Of readers than would be interested in a more technical treatment Of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Volcanoes: What They Are and What They Teach Since the date Of the appearance of the last editions of Scrope's works, inquiry and speculation concerning the nature and origin Of volcanoes have been alike active, and many Of the problems which were discussed by him, now present themselves under aspects entirely new and different from those in which he was accus tomed to regard them. NO one was ever more ready to welcome original views or to submit to having long cherished principles exposed to the ordeal Of free criticism than was Scrope; and few men retained to S0 advanced an age the power Of subjecting novel theories to the test of a rigorous and logical com parison with ascertained facts. All of his thoughts are very important to him, and when he has something to say, his words rumble and grumble in his tummy, they wiggle and jiggle on his tongue and then they push on his teeth, right before he ERUPTS (or interrupts). His mouth is a volcano! But when others begin to interrupt Louis, he learns how to respectfully wait for his turn to talk. My Mouth Is A Volcano takes an empathetic approach to the habit of interrupting and teaches children a witty technique to help them manage their rambunctious thoughts and words. Told from Louis' perspective, this story provides parents, teachers, and counselors with an entertaining way to teach children the value of respecting others by listening and waiting for their turn to speak.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Papers on Some Controverted Questions of Geology The presence Of water in Volcanic Eruptions is another subject on which a difference Of Opinion as to its origin and effects, exists. The cause Of the vast escape Of steam from Volcanoes has been held to be due to steam held or. Occluded, wholly or in great part, in the lava in the Volcanic foci. The Object Of the fourth Article is to show on the 'con trary that lava in the Volcanic foci does not contain occluded water, but that the 'waters which give rise, as well to the escape of steam as to explosions, are surface waters, which in their descent come in contact with the lava in the duct of the volcano as it approaches the surface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Volcanic Studies in Many Lands: Being Reproductions of Photographs Taken by the Author Mr. George Yeld, a yet closer friend and frequent companion in travel of Dr. Anderson, the matter was ultimately arranged, and the result is now in the readers' hands. The appearance has been retarded by more than one obstacle. It was some time before the Society was in a position, as inheritors of Dr. Anderson's collection of photographs and of a handsome legacy, to move in the matter, and delays arose from other causes, for which I am not responsible - one or two of them indirectly connected with the war. With one exception this volume includes work done Since 1902. The former volume, published at the end of that year, was in the press when Dr. Anderson, together with Dr. J. S. Flett, a distinguished member of our Geological Survey, were commis sioned by the Royal Society, in the early summer, to investigate the recent disastrous eruptions of the Soufriere in St. Vincent and Mont Pelee in Martinique. So striking were the effects of these that he kept the book back in order to include three illustrations of the former and one of the latter. The full account of the expedition was, however, published as a Joint Report to the Royal Society, in the Philosophical Transactions, and was illustrated by many reproduced photographs. In the later months of 1906 Dr. Anderson visited in succession the volcanic districts of Mexico and Guatemala, and in the earlier part of 1907 returned to St. Vincent and Martinique in order to study the effects of denudation and the new growth of vegetation during the interval. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Volcanoes: Their Structure and Significance The plan which I have adopted has occasionally brought about some slight repetition. From this I have not shrunk, for the average reader prefers, I think, reading on continuously, to turning back in order to refresh his memory. This plan also has obliged me occasionally to use a somewhat technical term before I have reached the place where it would naturally be explained. That difficulty I have tried to overcome by the aid of a short glossary. If I were writing a formal text-book, I should begin with a number of definitions; but when these come first, they prove anything but a whet to the appetite of the ordinary reader, even if scientifically inclined, and such a one it is whom I have kept in view. In his interest I have avoided, as far as possible, all technical terms. Indeed, I must ask critics to remember that my aim in writing has not been the examination-room. They will, I fear, detect mistakes; for these I ask pardon in advance. Humanum est errare, both in authors and in printers. They will doubtless be able to suggest improvements. That these might be made I am fully conscious, for I am an unnatural father, and when my literary offspring go forth into the world, I feel little disposition to dismiss them with a blessing. Turning, in conclusion, to a more grateful task, I have to express my thanks to friends for aid of various kinds. To the Rev. E. Hill for kindly reading the proof of the last chapter, and making valuable sugges tions thereon; to Professor Judd, on whose book I have more than once freely drawn; to the Council of the Royal Society for Figures 4. And 5; to that of the Geological Society for those of 8, 9, and 17; to Messrs. Cassell for Figures I and 3, which appeared in T lie Story of our Planet; and to Sir A. Geikie for kindly lending me Figures 13 and 15, which came from his Ancient Volcanoes of Great Britain. I have to thank my old pupil, Mr. A. S. Reid, for the photograph which has been reproduced on Plate XII., and am deeply indebted to Dr. Tempest Anderson for those which appear on Plates VIII IX., and X. His collection of photographic studies, taken with his own hand, of volcanic phenomena, is, I believe, unequalled in Britain, and I hope some day he will publish a selection of them, with a descriptive text. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanic eruptions are common, with more than 50 volcanic eruptions in the United States alone in the past 31 years. These eruptions can have devastating economic and social consequences, even at great distances from the volcano. Fortunately many eruptions are preceded by unrest that can be detected using ground, airborne, and spaceborne instruments. Data from these instruments, combined with basic understanding of how volcanoes work, form the basis for forecasting eruptionsâ€"where, when, how big, how long, and the consequences. Accurate forecasts of the likelihood and magnitude of an eruption in a specified timeframe are rooted in a scientific understanding of the processes that govern the storage, ascent, and eruption of magma. Yet our understanding of volcanic systems is incomplete and biased by the limited number of volcanoes and eruption styles observed with advanced instrumentation. Volcanic Eruptions and Their Repose, Unrest, Precursors, and Timing identifies key science questions, research and observation priorities, and approaches for building a volcano science community capable of tackling them. This report presents goals for making major advances in volcano science.
