Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Church and National Education I. - To the Irish Church, its ministers and its people, the question of Education is now one of the deepest interest and of paramount importance. So it is universally felt to be. Whatever side men may take in the controversy respecting it, all allow that it is a question on the decision of which depends, in a great measure, the moral and religious condition of our country. II. - The state of the Church of Ireland on the education question is felt to be most unsatisfactory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ruin of Education in Ireland: And the Irish Fanar In placing before the public the accompanying summary of my experiences of Irish education, in the form of an Outline of Evidence for the University Commission, I may be accused of a certain precipitation. I am supported, however, by other pioneers of reform in Ireland in thinking that not a moment can be lost in making known, at least, a sketch of our position. We have recognised well-known influences at work before the University Commission. We have marked the familiar selection of evidence. All the pliant personages, with whom the Senate of the Royal University was stuffed, are answering to the roll call. A full exposition of the struggle in Ireland between an incompetent but overwhelming dictatorship, and the unorganised and intimidated aspirations of the educated Laity, would fill a large volume, and easily two; nor need the revelations be wanting in piquancy any more than in importance. Hatred of England is all very well in its way, and so long as it keeps its head we cannot have too much of it while England rules us; but we cannot propose to build an Irish Republic upon a vacuum, nor yet upon half-a-dozen different foundations at once, without catastrophe Side by side with our efforts to expel the enemy we must be at work thinking out how we shall fill his place; we must contemplate no makeshift interregnum in Ireland, but have an ordered plan of a commonwealth to put into practice at once. The old vicious circle, that without expelling English rule you can construct nothing, and that in order to expel it you must construct something, can only be solved by aiming to do both together. It would be a sounder and a nobler thing to fight for a Roisin Dubh of flesh and blood whom we can clearly visualise than for a will-o'-the-wisp, a phantom clothed in a tricolor of whom we do not know whether she may turn out a beautiful queen or a hide ous grinning monster or worst of all perhaps a colourless and vapid suburban lady. Reconstruction for us must mean more than grants i-n aid and salaries to innumerable fat Controllers, or a discreet burying of the Labour tomahawk. In Ireland we must have not alone a reconstruction of industry, we must not alone disguise Tweedledum as a benevolent Tweedledee in economics and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The System of National Education in Ireland, Its Principle and Practice The object of these pages may be briefly stated. It is not, I entreat the public to understand, the exposure of Mr. Carlile, or of any of the Commissioners of the Board of National Education. That object would never have induced me to take up the pen. The conduct of the Commissioners is a matter quite incidental to the question, and on which, if I could have avoided it, I should have been glad to pronounce no opinion. My object was the exposure of the system, and of that system the Commissioners form but a small part. The evil lies in the machine, not in the men who work it. They of course become implicated by their position, but if they were changed again and again, the mischief would remain unmitigated. That evil lies in uniting together men of opposite religious opinions, and committing to them the superintendence of popular education. That is the inherent vice of the system, and wherever that vice is repeated, the same results will appear. It is all the more necessary to bring this before the public at the present time, that an attempt is made to infuse the venom of this system both into England and Scotland. A struggle has commenced; and with the same party, a struggle to establish Liberalism in education. Liberalism in religion (or the Voluntary System), has for some years been obtruded upon us. Liberalism in education is now thrust on our notice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University Education in Ireland The political condition of Ireland is, at present, grave and, in the event of a war with the United States, would become menacing, to England. Irish politicians assert - and it is partly admitted by their opponents - that, in the existing state of Ireland, three questions demand an immediate solution: these questions are, the Land Question, the Church Question. P God loves us, and sent his Son to save us. The word of God tells us to, love him. If we are bad, God will not love us, and we will not go to him when we go from this world. God gave this law to men, that they should love him more than all things in the world. It was God that made me at first; it is he that still keeps me in life it is from him that all good things come which are in my lot; and it was he who sent Christ to save me. I wish that I could love him, and fear him, and do his will, and pray to him as I ought. It is a great sin to break the Lord's 'day, or to take his name in vain, or to go with those who walk in the path of sin. He hates all such things, and in his wrath will come upon those who do them, and who will not turn from them. I pray that I may not think bad thoughts, nor speak bad, words, nor do bad deeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Points at Issue Between the Established Church and the National Board of Education in Ireland Of this petition I had never heard. But it is not my object, as far as I am concerned, to attribute any blame to the conductors. If the excellent Prelate, who of course must have taken the lead, had concluded that, as I have the happiness of agreeing with him on so many points, I concurred with him also m the prayer of this petition; and had he actually put down my name, I should not have been offended nor surprised, but rather have been grateful to his lordship for such a proof of free and friendly confidence. But let this matter stand as it may, - let it be that by an error of the Evening Mail, the diocese of Cashel has been mentioned, or that, by a momentary inadvertence on the part of Mr. Shaw, these words were introduced; still the appearance of them in the public papers has turned the balance, so as to decide me on the publication of the following pages. If I cannot reasonably suppose that they will have much influence upon others, it will be a satisfaction to my own mind not to be misunderstood on points so frequently discussed and on which it is so painful either to give an apparent consent by silence, or to engage in endless disputation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Politics of Education: The Problem of Free Education Considered The subject of Free Education suffers under two serious disadvantages, which tend to bias unfavourably the public judgment. In the first place, the ever-increasing claims of the Education Department upon the taxpayer, together with the gourd-like growth of School Board claims upon the ratepay er, try the public patience to a 'degree which reaches the point of alarm, when further millions are asked' for in order to free our elementary schools from the payment of fees. In the second place, Free Education has, unfortunately, been made a party cry, and, as a consequence, the advocates of the fee system come to the discussion of the question with the appearance of party feeling and a lack of sympathy for the poor. The Conserva tive instinct that leads us along the old ways which have served us well in the past, until we see our way clear to something better, thus plays as it were into the hands of extremists, and gives to destructives a seeming monopoly of sentiment and sympathy for distress. If there is any one subject that should be lifted out of the sphere of party politics it is that of national education, the influence of which is universal and permeates every grade of society and every individual citizen. The example of our clergy, who, ' Conservative by tradition, office, habit, and feeling, nobly bore, for generations before the era of School Boards. This is indeed a way of getting funds, but we doubt whether it is an honest way; it is one we should hesitate to adopt, whilst we ask nothing more than an Open sanction of such schools, as, in this case, are silently and secretly permitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Endowed Schools of Ireland These chapters, which have appeared in the Daily News during the Parliamentary recess, are reprinted before the opening of the session, in the hope of awakening the attention of the friends of education in general, and of our legislators in particular, to the danger of the misapplication of Irish Endowments. It is understood that Government is likely to bring forward a measure opposed to the recommendations of the Report of the majority of the Commissioners. The passage of such a measure can scarcely happen if the Report does but obtain due and timely attention from the members of the Legislature, as it assuredly could not be proposed, under the guidance of Mr. Stephens, by any Ministers who had fairly collated the statements of his "Letter to Sir George Grey" with the evidence and the Report which is grounded upon it. Yet it is only too possible that the bigotry, cupidity, tyranny, and craft of a small section of Irish society may obtain an advantage over the better will, mind, and intent of the majority of the friends of Ireland - over the aims of the founders of trusts - and over the educational interests of the great middle classes, if instant care be not taken to do justice to the old Endowments. In such a crisis, the humblest friends of the rising middle class of Ireland should put forth their efforts: and mine have taken form in this free exposition of the case of Irish Intermediate Education, and of the Report in which it is thoroughly illustrated. These articles were collected into a small volume and published in that form at the end of the year 1871. The Chief Secretary for Ireland having declared, in the House of Commons, on the 14th of this month, that Her Majesty's Government has before it a scheme for the settlement of the important question of Intermediate Education, the circumstances of the pre sent time seem to call for a republication of this most valuable and trustworthy work.
