Making rough places smooth, and adapting the treatment of each topic to present needs, I have tried to make the book more serviceable to advanced students of English Composition. From Book I. Of Part I. Some elementary matters have been omitted, but so much material has been added that the total number of pages is increased; in Book II. Of Part I. The old material has been re arranged and new material has been introduced. In Part II. Still greater changes have been made: Description and Narration, which were originally treated together. Are now treated in separate chapters and with greater fulness; the chapters on Argument have been thrown into one and entirely rewritten; and a chapter on Exposition has been added. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Rhetoric: With Constructive and Critical Work in Composition "The art of instruction for the secondary school," it has been said, "may be summed up in one sentence: Inspire enthusiastic activity." It is not enough, however, to inspire such activity; provision for its proper exercise must be made. The material that forms the basis of this book was collected in my own classes during a period of years, for the purpose of arousing and satisfying the pupils interest and activity with reference to rhetoric and composition. Later, at the request of teachers, the material was put into the form of a book. That the book might meet general conditions in the classroom, it was submitted before its publication to able instructors and critics, teachers of English in a number of widely separated centres. Their suggestions were valuable, and are incorporated in the book as published. Because many text-books already in use contain admirable presentations of rhetorical principles, with exercises on some of them and with lists of composition subjects, ' it is by no means unnecessary for the author of a new rhetoric to state what differentiates his work from other books on the same subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric, or the Principles of Elocution and Rhetorical Composition An attempt to reduce the principles of read ing to a theoretic system of any considerable extent, is, i am aware, regarded by many, as impracticable and useless. It is said, that the oral expression should in all cases be adapted to the sense, and that as the latter is, so the former should be infinitely various; and there fore not to be regulated by specific rules. It is true, the sentiments we may have occasion to read, are infinitely various; and it is impossible to define by any rules, that can be given, all the diversities, a perfect elocution may require. But the like may with equal truth be afi'irmed of music, and almost every art that can be named. The questions, to be solved by arithmetic, are infinitely various; but still there are many anal ogies among them, whereby they are rendered susceptible of rules, the utility of which it were folly to deny. This book is a lively set of lessons on the subject. It is about rhetorical figures: practical ways of applying old and powerful principles--repetition and variety, suspense and relief, concealment and surprise, the creation of expectations and then the satisfaction or frustration of them--to the composition of a simple sentence or a complete paragraph. --from publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyers, law students and their teachers all too frequently overlook the most comprehensive, adaptable and practical analysis of legal discourse ever devised: the classical art of rhetoric. Classical analysis of legal reasoning, methods and strategy is the foundation and source for most modern theories on the topic. Beginning with Aristotle's Rhetoric and culminating with Cicero's De Oratore and Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria, Greek and Roman rhetoricians created a clear, experience-based theoretical framework for analyzing legal discourse. This book is the first to systematically examine the connections between classical rhetoric and modern legal discourse. It traces the history of legal rhetoric from the classical period to the present day and shows how modern theorists have unknowingly benefited from the classical works. It also applies classical rhetorical principles to modern appellate briefs and judicial opinions to demonstrate how a greater familiarity with the classical sources can deepen our understanding of legal reasoning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric -- the theory of oral discourse -- affected and indeed pervaded all aspects of classical thought. Bearing the stamp of its impact were the Homeric hymns, the Iliad and the Odyssey, Aeschylus' Eumenides, the great dramatic tragedies, the elegiac and lyric poetry, and the literature of the Romans, often formed in the Greek image. The rhetorical notion of probability had direct implications for the classical philosopher and mathematician as it does today. Departments of speech, English, philosophy and classics provide the key centers of interest in the new and the classical rhetorics. Despite the considerable enthusiasm for the study of rhetoric, no single work provides large selections of primary materials written by the classical rhetoricians themselves. Until now, only secondary sources containing tiny excerpts, or entire and expensive translations of the ancient rhetorical writings were available. This large anthology of primary readings of the classical rhetoricians in translation fills this large gap. The continuity and coherence of ancient rhetorical traditions is emphasized by organizing large excerpts into the topical divisions that later classical writers agreed upon. The first unit of this anthology sets forth major issues in the definition and scope of rhetoric, and its appropriate place among other modes of thought and discourse. Parts 2 through 5 are organized according to the traditional canons of oratory -- invention, disposition, style, memory, and delivery. In organizing the readings this way, the editors represent both the philosophical and theoretical issues in rhetoric and its pragmatic functions as a craft for making effective discourse. Selecting excerpts that illustrate the major conflicts within the unfolding tradition enables a sampling of not only the major points of view, but also the arguments supporting them. This volume includes selections not only from writings of the standard classical rhetoricians but also from less typical works which have special value. The editors have utilized the best accessible translations while remaining absolutely faithful to their texts.

Book excerpt: This book introduces a novel approach to the analysis and practice of persuasive speaking and writing: heuristic rhetoric. The new method has evolved to fulfil the need at universities, government departments, political organisations, business enterprises and other public institutions for a modern practical alternative to classical rhetoric, which is, in the author’s view, no longer capable of giving a complete description of contemporary, predominantly mediatised, forms of public persuasive discourse, whilst other competing disciplines, such as critical discourse analysis or strategic manoeuvring, have not yet produced a set of tools, which have the comprehensive nature and practical orientation of Classical Greek and Roman rhetorical system. The book expounds heuristic rhetoric as an inter-disciplinary method to develop advanced skills of critical and strategic reasoning. Applying a novel set of principles for the strategic analysis of persuasive reasoning in complex rhetorical situations, the method emphasizes preparing and continuously adjusting argumentation according to the demands of unpredictable circumstances.
