Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Phrenology Th following Treatise owes its origin to the conviction that there was both room and need for it. The only works which even pretend to give more than a mere outline, or grammar of Phrenology, offer to the public an account of the most popular of all sciences at the most anti-popular of all prices. The Author has endeavoured to furnish ample details of the theory of mind and morals, which forms the subject of this digest, at a cost which will render it accessible to the great body of the people. Phrenology has left the discoveries of its original expounders at a great distance behind. The Institutes of Gall and Spurzheim, excellent as in many respects they are, have now become almost obsolete. Mr. Combe's System contains an admirable exposition of the present state of the science; but as his views differ materially from those of many, and as his doctrines, both relative to the function of the organs and the applications of the principles of this new philosophy, were supposed to be liable to numerous and grave objections, the writer of this work was induced to undertake it for the double purpose of expounding his own opinions of the analysis of the faculties, and of exposing what he conceives to be the errors of others. That he himself has escaped from falling into many, he does not venture to hope - that he will be blamed for more than he has committed, he feels too well assured. But if he shall have succeeded in rendering a competent knowledge of the science more easily attainable, in exciting a healthy spirit of free inquiry, and, above all, in stimulating others to a more careful investigation of, and to fresh discoveries in, that most defective of all departments of Phrenology, its metaphysics, he shall rest satisfied that he has not written in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Principles of Phrenology Are the Only Principles Capable of Being Reconciled With the Immateriality and Immortality of the Soul AT the risk of being considered somewhat egotisti cal, I shall detail the history of my connexion with Phrenology. My medical education was commenced at Trinity College, Dublin, early in 1833. Towards the end of that year, it was arranged to take out Anatomical Dissections under Dr Power, who was highly spoken of as a lecturer at the Richmond School of Medicine. I repaired to his class-room, and there heard the first lecture on Anatomy I ever listened to. His subject was the Human Brain. There was a brain on the table, but the description he gave of it was quite unintelligible to me. He sliced it away from above downwards after the orthodox anatomical method. His descriptions of the different sections, as he used the scalpel, were very minute; but as he sliced away portion after portion he always took care to tell us that the use of this part, and this'part, and this part, was not known. The whole affair appeared such a farce that I had a strong idea of giving up the profession. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Phrenology: Or an Inquiry Into the Principles and Utility of the System of Drs; Gall and Spurzheim, and Into the Objections Made Against It The following are the circumstances which have led to the publication of this volume of Essays. My first information concerning the System of Drs Gall and Spurzheim, was derived from No. 49. of the Edinburgh Review. Led away by the boldness of that piece of criticism, I regarded the System as contemptibly absurd, and the authors of it as the most disingenuous of men. After this, however, in 1816, I accepted an invitation from a friend to attend a private dissection of a recent brain, to be performed by Dr Spurzheim. The subject was not altogether new, as I had previously attended a course of Demonstrative Lectures on Anatomy by Dr Barclay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from System of Phrenology The call for a third edition of this work is a proof that the public continues to take an interest in the subject of which it treats. In the Introduction to this edition, akfull exposition is presented of the principles on which Phren ology is founded, written for the information of readers who may be in doubt whether or not it is worthy of philosophical consideration. In other parts of the work, considerable additions have been made. Figures have been introduced to illustrate the forms of several of the heads described. These, although far from being sufficient to convey complete and correct notions of the objects represented, will be useful in giving more precision to the reader's conceptions, and may induce him to make observations in the great field of nature. It was my wish to have had all the figures drawn to a scale, but the engraver has not been successful in realizing this intention. The outline is accurate, and there is an approm'mation to one standard of proportion in the different figures; but it is not such as enables me to exhibit a scale. Hence there is as moderate an introduction as possible of technical or learned terms. The Author's leading desire is to prevent people from hastening to the more practical part of the Science without a due consideration of its principles, which are the more valuable part, inasmuch as they intimate to us the wisdom and will of the Deity as displayed in the constitution of the human mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New System of Phrenology The study of human nature has in all ages been deemed of the very first importance, and called into vigorous action the master minds of every civilized nation. But the numerous systems that have been successively produced and abandoned, afford sufficient evidence that the great fundamental principles of human nature had never been discovered. Some philosophers have shut themselves in their closets, and endeavored, by reflecting upon the operations of their own minds, to flame a system of mental philosophy, which would apply to all man kind: but the result was, that they only acquired an imperfect history of a few of their own mental powers, while they remained in total ignorance of the causes which produce the great diversity of human character. Others endeavored to acquire a knowledge of man by tra velling, and mingling With all classes and conditions of the human race. These were more successful; but however much knowledge might, by the experience of a whole life, be acquired in this manner, it necessarily died with the individual, as it was of such a nature that it could not be communicated. Anatomical investigation, was another mode of studying human nature; but although this led to more correct notions concerning the functions of the body, it shed no light upon the nature of the mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phrenology Made Easy: A New System of Mental Science Multum in parvo, much in little, is the author's motto in the preparation of his work. I have endeavored to present in a simple and comprehensive form the underlying principles of what mayjustly be said to be the most accurate system of mental science which has yet been presented to the reading public or taught by teachers, taking the liberty of introducing several new features in the way of grouping and explaining the various faculties previously discovered and located in the head, and at the same time to present a conception of a har monious development, which my observations have proven to me to be the true one, which is also apparently more in ao cord with Nature's universal rule of order, symmetry, and balance, than that heretofore advanced. I arrived at this conception after years of observation and study toward the one particular end, realizing that it is as impossible to teach or to arrive at any thing like accurate conclusions in regard to character from a study of the head without first having a standard of excellence or harmony, as it is to measure grain without having a standard bushel measure. I was greatly aided in my studies by two courses of instruction (in 1881 and 1884) taken in the American Institute of Phrenolog'y in New York city; but I remained as much in the dark, in regard to this special point when I graduated as I had been when I en tered, personal observation and study from life having taught me that the head presented by them as their ideal did not in a number of particulars correspond with the true proportions as discovered to accompany a harmonious character. I hope I have made the following explanations clear enough to leave the'impression that there is at least a strong plausibility as to the correctness of my assumptions, and if the study of the principles hereinafter set forth be followed by careful obser vations with the view of testing the accuracy of my standard, I believe that it will be universally indorsed.
