Early in its history such instruction was a part of the curriculum of general horticulture, lectures in floriculture being given by those engaged in teaching other branches. Within the last ten years there has been, a breaking up of general horticultural instruction. Separate departments of pomology, market-gardening, and floriculture have been created, and each is supervised by one who devotes his entire time to his special subject. Floricultural education, as a distinct and separate department, is, therefore, of comparatively recent origin. Because of this, there are few precedents, and the courses given have resulted from the experiences of comparatively few men. The material here presented has been compiled largely from the author's lectures. The book is, therefore, the outgrowth of experience and general observations. Branches of the subject which seemed unimportant, and methods of teaching which proved ineffective, have been eliminated, and only those phases retained which have appeared to meet the needs of students. In the author's experience in teaching distinctly floricultural subjects, he has felt the need of a text-book. There are good books on special topics but no one work that treats of the general principles of flower-growing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to Floriculture: Containing Instructions to the Young Florist In regard to gardeners in general, in this country, the major part are self-taught: a reflection on this particular subject alone ought to encourage those possessing a natural taste for the science, that the art is attainable; this will better enable any to cultivate with a prospect of success. The Scotch gardeners are considered the best ln Europe; we seldom find an English gardener, on his arrival m this country, capable of conducting a green-house as it should be done. This leads a person. To suppose that those exotics are only employed in the drudgery of weeding in their na tive country, and when here wish to pass for bona fide gar deners; indeed, most of the experienced English gardeners find their knowledge of cultivation in this country deficient, as the difference of clime and soil varies materially to what they were accustomed to; but a scientific man will soon discover the difference and alter his mode, if not too old in his fixed principles or prejudice. There are other sciences attached to gardening that makes the system more complete, which is understood but partially in practice, and not at all in theory, I allude to Botany, that part which relates to plants; it is a branch that ought to be studied, as it leads the mind to a thorough knowledge of the distinct species of plants, their properties, sexes, order, and indeed the whole system, The ground work of this science leads, the mind to a knowledge of ma ny important particulars in relation to flowers. To know how to anatomize flowers is particularly interesting to the mind of the cultivator, though not absolutely necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers, How to Grow Them: A Practical Treatise Devoted Mainly to the Care of Indoor Flowers IN order to grow flowers well - and the true lover Of flowers will not be satisfied to grow them in any other way - one must understand their habits and requirements. Unless these are understood the cul tivation of flowers will be largely experimental in its nature, and no one will feel confident Of doing the right thing in the right way at the right time. The experiment may prove successful, but in many in stances it will prove to be a failure. It is therefore desirable that the beginner should understand cer tain general principles Upon Which successful flori culture is based, and it is the Object of this little book to teach these principles in a concise, common sense, practical manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Floriculture: A Guide to the Successful Cultivation of Florists' Plants, for the Amateur and Professional Florist I am often asked the question if it is necessary in order to become a florist to enter some large establishment for a few years, or whether it is possible to learn from reading only. I reply, if it can be afforded, it will be best, by all means, to serve at least two years in some well-conducted establishment - one that has been long enough established to have made the business a suc cess, for the best index of ability in any business is suc cess. I have said, if it can be afforded, as for the first two years, unless a youth proves himself unusually smart, he will not likely receive more than enough to pay his board, for he is simply an apprentice under instructions, who has come with the design of leaving when he has acquired a knowledge of the trade, and just at the time when he begins to be of use to his employer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Florist, 1846, Vol. 1 of 6: Or Lady's Journal of Horticulture Thus supported and encouraged, we shall be enabled to give our Journal each of the three qualities which such a work ought to possess, in order to effect all the good which it is capable of producing. In the first place we shall be enabled to explain, without the mystification of hypothesis, or the jargon of technical words, those general principles upon which the art of floriculture is founded, and which enable any florist to extend the field of his labours as he sees occasion. In the Second place, we shall be enabled to furnish descriptions of favourite flowers, and the best method of cultivating them by the most eminent parties who are engaged in that cultivation. In the third place, our pictorial illustrations will form one of the most unique and accurate, and therefore most valuable collections of floral portraits ever offered to the public. Besides these three grand qualities, we shall be always ready to answer questions, clear up doubts, or put our readers in possession of any information which they may desire, and we and out cooperators can supply. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Plant Physiology During the past five years since the first edition of this book appeared, it has met with more favor in the eyes of teachers and students of the subject than the author (or the publishers) had anticipated even in the most sanguine moments. But during those five years much phytophysiological water has passed under the botanical bridge. Once again has come the task of deciding what matter shall be included and what shall not. There is also the question of maintaining the book within a reasonable size. N o self-respecting student can be expected to carry an elementary book of more than 500 pages. Most gospels are small; but revisions have a tendency to get bigger and (let us hope) better. An elementary text should be up to date and yet not con tain many disputable data. However, if one included in a text book only those facts to which every plant physiologist subscribed wholeheartedly all of the time, the author would finish with a mere pamphlet. A happy medium must be sought. Whether the teacher professor who reads this will think this golden mean has here been attained, will depend upon his personal predilections and the number of fields in which he is not a specialist. So in this, as in the previous edition, there has been an attempt to hold as much as possible to the essentials of a general, elementary course, bearing in mind that this elementary course may be pre paring the student for courses in horticulture, agronomy, or forestry; for more advanced courses in plant physiology; or for a more appreciative life in the nonprofessional world.
