Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1418 – Pre-Columbian Mexico Fifteen-year old crown prince Acolmiztli wants nothing more than to see his city-state of Tetzcoco thrive. A singer, poet, and burgeoning philosophical mind, he has big plans about infrastructure projects and cultural initiatives that will bring honor to his family and help his people flourish. But the two sides of his family, the kingdoms of Mexico and Acolhuacan, have been at war his entire life – after his father risked the wrath of the Tepanec emperor to win his mother's love. When a power struggle leaves his father dead and his mother and siblings in exile, Acolmiztli must run for his life, seeking refuge in the wilderness. After a coyote helps him find his way in the wild, he takes on a new name – Nezahualcoyotl, or "fasting coyote" ("Neza" for short). Biding his time until he can form new alliances and reconnect with his family, Neza goes undercover, and falls in love with a commoner girl, Sekalli. Can Neza survive his plotting uncles' scheme to wipe out his line for good? Will the empire he dreams of in Tetzcoco ever come to life? And is he willing to risk the lives of those he loves in the process? This action-packed tale blends prose and poetry – including translations of surviving poems by Nezahualcoytl himself, translated from classical Nahuatl by the author. And the book is packed with queer rep – queer love stories, and a thoughtful of pre-Columbian understandings of gender that defy the contemporary Western gender binary. From Pura Belpré honoree David Bowles comes a young adult epic about one of the greatest minds of the Americas (honored to this day on Mexico's 100-peso bill).

Wilson Literary Science Writing Award "A masterly synthesis of scientific research and personal observation." -Wall Street Journal Legends don't come close to capturing the incredible story of the coyote. Book excerpt: In this bat-mad collection of twisted tales, Peter Hargitai lets out all the stops: he is irreverent, funny, and irresistible. Learn about the real Vlad the Impaler and his poor performance on the Hamilton Depression Scale due to Dracula wannabees like Bla Lugosi; goddesses pursuing shepherds hunkering after sheep; straight serpent-like creatures and gay super-heroes; tattooed dragon slayers, medieval shepherds whose lies tell the truth, talking cocks stalking Turkish emperors; an artistic lad who wants to be called Andr and join the Merchant Marine in land-locked Transylvania; a blind princess under the spell of an evil sorceress; a blood countess who wants to be forever young through a combination of Botox and an Iron Maiden. And one damsel who fulfills her impossible dream of becoming a king after a sex-change operation in nearby Serbia. Who Let the Bats Out? Twisted Tales from Transylvania, a hilarious tweaking of folk tales from the Hungarian oral tradition, will make you laugh out loud on every page. They are about fantastical beings as in the story of Hunor and Magor, twin hunters who come to earth like two falling stars, obsessed by the behind of a magical white hind. The elusive creature leads them to a meadow of beautiful moon maidens they are destined to marry were it not for their forbidding pre-nuptials...

The animals tell stories of the Skinless Ones, whose cities and roads once covered the earth, but the Skinless disappeared long ago. Casseomae is content to live alone, apart from the other bears in her tribe, until one of the ancients' sky vehicles crashes to the ground, and from it emerges a Skinless One, a child. Rather than turn him over to the wolves, Casseomae chooses to protect this human cub, to find someplace safe for him to live. But where among the animals will a human child be safe? And is Casseomae threatening the safety of the Forest and all its tribes by protecting him? Middle-grade fans of postapocalyptic fiction are in for a treat with this fanciful and engaging animal story by the author of the Clockwork Dark trilogy.

Unfortunately, the pack’s hapless patron can’t help but thwart him at every turn. After being magically attached to the Coyote group for more than a century, Willa Matheson has a soft spot for them—even the dangerous ones threatening to expose them to humans. She may have hired Blue to rein in the pack, but the two constantly disagree on strategy. She’s afraid to ruffle feathers, but take-charge Blue will do whatever it takes to get his Coyotes in line. And to complicate things even more: all signs point to the anxious demigoddess being his mate. Developing a tenderness for Willa will be an obstacle to Blue’s determination to be as ruthless as he needs to be, but if the duo can’t find a way to retract their claws, and soon, it may be too late to protect the pack’s secret—and their own hearts.

Frank Dobie melds natural history with tales and lore in articulating the complex and often contentious relationship between coyotes and humans. Based on his own life experiences in Texas and twenty-five years of research, Dobie forges a sympathetic and nuanced picture of the coyote prefiguring later environmental and conservation movements. He recognizes the impact of human action on the coyote while also examining the prominent role of the coyote in the myths and legends of the West.

Book excerpt: Coyote's Song: Part Two concludes the tale of the rising, young Coyote and the changes for the former Coyote as the latter becomes an incarnation of Vishnu. Though Coyote is not to be totally trusted, various figures of power, considered good or evil, try to recruit him to further their causes, whether hunting for enlightenment or for sport. Some characters take comfort in philosophy, others in self-imagery, as if it seems the whole world is preoccupied with looking at itself. Where does the inner-god end and ego-driven narcissism begin? Perhaps it is only a prank by the Heavens and gravity arranging stars and planets to effect and reflect our lives until Coyote rearranges the stories of the universe. Coyote's Song is written in pentameter rhyming couplets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1940's Jules Busch is a poor but independent bachelor who lives in the Little Dixie part of Missouri called Possum Walk. Possum Walk is a small agricultural community (not a town) and it is primitive (mud roads, no electricity, no indoor plumbing, wood stoves for heating and cooking, and the like). The people of Possum Walk work their subsistence farms and only a few can afford tractors. Most use horse drawn and hand equipment. The depression, which is over in certain places, still holds a firm grip here. The nearest towns, Mexico and Centralia, are also small. Jules leads a somewhat dissolute life and some refer to him as "poor white trash." Certainly he is so regarded in the community, as is his brother and mother. He has yearnings however of which he is not fully conscious. He is not sure who his father was, and even the one who so claimed, died before Jules knew him. Jules is rejected by the Army for duty in WW II because of a heart murmur. He only has a eighth grade education, however he is quite intelligent, a fact of which he is not initially aware. He has two friends, John Harrison and Willy Woolf. Harrison is a poor but well respected farmer and Woolf own a large property and is the area's rich man. Jules roams the country roads on his horse Rhony, and wears two revolvers like an old time bad man. Most respectable people keep well clear of him, at least in public, but he seems to have ample lady friends. He lives on a small isolated acreage in the middle of forest land owned by Woolf. Woolf sold him the property after Jules won a big poker pot. Wiley, his dog, is Jules' closest companion, and helps protect the property when Jules is away. Harrison encourages Jules to give up his destructive ways which include adultery, general philandering, gambling, and drinking. This good advice has little effect until Harrison dies and Jules takes a close look at himself and doesn't like what he sees. He has promised Harrison to reform sometime and realizes it's now time. He listened to Harrison, because Harrison always treated him with respect, something that few others did. Harrison also helped get him out of jail more than once. Jules believes he needs to repay his moral debt to John by helping the Harrison family (Eloise the mother, and Mary, Jany, and Jimmy the children). In particular he believes he needs to advise Harrison's young son Jimmy, more or less as John Harrison advised him. He begins to clean up his life by dropping a relationship with a married woman, Grecia Kuhn, and by getting a part time job. Along with "Uncle Tyrone," Harrison's somewhat disreputable hobo brother who arrives after John's death, Jules begins to help the Harrison family. The Harrison's sell their farm and move to Columbia, MO where the children can economically obtain degrees at the University of Missouri. Jules further troubles include the suicide of his brother triggered by the brother and his wife accidentally smothering their baby who slept in their bed. In addition the anger of the brothers (Heintz and Herman) of Klaus Kuhn, who Jules has cuckolded, causes problems. Jules is convinced by Willy Woolf that he needs to further his education as an aid to turning his life around and resolving the moral debts he owes to others and indeed to himself. To that end he works to earn a High School Equivalency and then goes to the University of Missouri where he earns a bachelor's degree (in physics), and eventually a law degree. Hard continuous study, as well as living in a cosmopolitan (for its time) town and being judged by students and professors, is a difficult adjustment for Jules After graduation, Woolf helps him join a law firm in Mexico and Jules takes over the job of working with farmers to assist them with government programs, obtaining loans, taxes, and in other ways. He also has the opportunity to aid John Harrison's son and thus square his obliga
