Book excerpt: “The Primitive Mind Cure” is an 1885 treatise on the ability of the mind to heal with reference to Christian philosophy and transcendental medicine, by Warren Felt Evans. This vintage book is highly recommended for those with an interest in the power of the mind and the New Thought movement in particular. Contents include: “What are Ideas, and What is Idealism?”, “The Application of the Idealistic Philosophy of the Cure of Mental and Bodily Maladies”, “The Triune Constitution of Man and the Discovery of the True Self”, “The Saving Power of the Spirit of Man”, “Happiness and Health, and Where they are to be Found”, etc. Warren Felt Evans (1817–1889) was an American author famous for his writings related to the New Thought movement, a movement originating from 19th century United States based upon the ideas that God exists everywhere, sickness originates in the mind, and that thinking “correctly” has the ability to heal. He became a proponent of the movement during 1863 as a result of seeking healing from Phineas P. Quimby, the movement's founder. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with an essay by William Al-Sharif.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface. THIS volume is designed to contribute something toward supplying the demand in the public for further light on the subject upon which it treats, -the cure of disease in ourselves and others by mental and spiritual agencies. The first work of the author having a relation to the subject, was published over twenty-two years ago. It was followed, at intervals of different length, by four other volumes, which have had an extensive circulation in every part of the country, and to some extent in Europe. It is not an incredible supposition that they have had an influence, more or less, towards generating in the public mind the widely-spread and growing belief of the mental origin of disease, and of the relation of the mind to its cure. The work is intended to take the reader up where the last volume of the author, ''The Divine Law of Cure," leaves him, and conduct him still further along the same path of inquiry. It does not claim to have exhausted the subject, or to have said all that might be said; for the subject is one too vast to be crowded into so limited a compass, which would be like condensing the ocean into the dimensions of a lake. But it is to be hoped that enough has been said to vindicate the propriety of the title, -that of "Elementary Lessons in Christian Philosophy and Transcendental Medicine." It was our aim to furnish the teachers and pupils of the spiritual philosophy of healing, with a text-book which should elevate the subject into the dignity of a science....

Excerpt: ... chapter V. happiness and health, and wheee thet abe to be found. Blessedness and health are so closely related that they may be viewed as identical and inseparable. Disease has its spiritual counterpart in some mental unhappiness, some inharmony of the inner nature, some spiritual wretchedness, which ultimates itself in the body. For this antecedent mental disturbance we must first find a remedy, or the cure of the body is impossible; or, if it were possible, is of trifling value. To learn how and where to find true happiness, is to discover the best remedy for disease. To begin our search for this panacea and true elixir vitce, let it be observed that all desirable mental conditions are already in the spirit of every man as a possibility; or, as it is expressed in philosophical language, in potentia, though they may, for the present, be beyond the region of consciousness or sensation, though they exist as a fact in our inner being, and only wait recognition. They may be in a state of latency, like the germ of a plant in the seed, but are capable of being awakened into conscious activity. It has been said of the lotus, the sacred and expressive symbol in the religion of the Hindus and the Egyptians, that its seeds, even before they germinate, contain perfectly formed leaves, and the miniature representation of the perfected plant. This is an instance of preformation or antecedent ideal creation, which has its application to the subject before us. All the happy feelings and emotions that go to make up a state of tranquil blessedness, or spiritual healthfulness, are already in us, and can be aroused from their dormancy or quiescence, and be made to exist in actu, or in actual consciousn

Book excerpt: ""In Religion and Medicine, Dr. Jeff Levin, distinguished Baylor University epidemiologist, outlines the longstanding history of multifaceted interconnections between the institutions of religion and medicine. He traces the history of the encounter between these two institutions from antiquity through to the present day, highlighting a myriad of contemporary alliances between the faith-based and medical sectors. Religion and Medicine tells the story of: religious healers and religiously branded hospitals and healthcare institutions; pastoral professionals involved in medical missions, healthcare chaplaincy, and psychological counseling; congregational health promotion and disease prevention programs and global health initiatives; research studies on the impact of religious and spiritual beliefs and practices on physical and mental health, well-being, and healing; programs and centers for medical research and education within major universities and academic institutions; religiously informed bioethics and clinical decision-making; and faith-based health policy initiatives and advocacy for healthcare reform. Religion and Medicine is the first book to cover the full breadth of this subject. It documents religion-medicine alliances across religious traditions, throughout the world, and over the course of history. It summarizes a wide range of material of relevance to historians, medical professionals, pastors and theologians, bioethicists, scientists, public health educators, and policymakers. The product of decades of rigorous and focused research, Dr. Levin has produced the most comprehensive history of these developments and the finest introduction to this emerging field of scholarship.""--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ambitious history of desire in Anglo-American religion across three centuries. The pursuit of happiness weaves disparate strands of Anglo-American religious history together. In The Delight Makers, Catherine L. Albanese unravels a theology of desire tying Jonathan Edwards to Ralph Waldo Emerson to the religiously unaffiliated today. As others emphasize redemptive suffering, this tradition stresses the “metaphysical” connection between natural beauty and spiritual fulfillment. In the earth’s abundance, these thinkers see an expansive God intent on fulfilling human desire through prosperity, health, and sexual freedom. Through careful readings of Cotton Mather, Andrew Jackson Davis, William James, Esther Hicks, and more, Albanese reveals how a theology of delight evolved alongside political overtures to natural law and individual liberty in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many twenty-first-century evangelical charismatics in Britain are looking for a faith that works. They want to experience the miraculous in terms of healings and Godsent financial provision. Many have left the mainstream churches to join independentcharismatic churches led by those who are perceived to have special insights and to teach principles that will help believers experience the miraculous. But all is not rosy in this promised paradise, and when people are not healed or they remain poor they are often told that it is because they did not have enough faith. This study discovers the origin of the principles that are taught by some charismatic leaders. Glyn Ackerley identifies them as the same ideas that are taught by the positive confession, health, wealth, and prosperity movement, originating in the United States. The origins of the ideas are traced back to New Thought metaphysics and its background philosophies of subjective idealism and pragmatism. These principles were imported into the UK through contact between British leaders and those influenced by American word of faith teachers. Glyn Ackerley explains the persuasiveness of such teachers by examining case studies, suggesting their miracles may well have socialand psychological explanations rather than divine origins.
