Book excerpt: "In God's dispensation and economy, the leading ministry is the priesthood. In this universe God has an administration, a divine economy. His economy is the way He arranges or dispenses. Therefore, it is a kind of dispensation. According to the Bible there are three main ministries in God's divine dispensation: the priesthood, the kingship, and the prophethood. The priesthood is the leading ministry of the three and brings the kingship and prophethood into function. In other words, both the kingship and the prophethood depend upon the leading ministry of the priesthood."

This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there anything in the New Testament about the need for priests in the Church? Many Protestants would argue no. And if you point out that there is a priesthood in the Old Testament, they are likely to say it was a feature of the Old Covenant that was undone by Christ. How should a Catholic respond? In Jesus and the Old Testament Roots of the Priesthood, biblical scholar John Bergsma convinces readers that Jesus did, in fact, intend for a ministerial priesthood to be a key feature of the New Covenant. Bergsma shows how the priesthood is a major thread holding together the biblical story line—beginning with Adam’s loss of the gift of priesthood in the Fall and the long process of restoring his descendants to a priestly status over the centuries, culminating with Christ. With chapter summaries and discussion questions included, Jesus and the Old Testament Roots of the Priesthood can readily be adapted into a four-part study for personal or small group use.
Book Synopsis Jesus Our Priest by : Gerald O'Collins
Download or read book Jesus Our Priest written by Gerald O'Collins and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-03-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years many books have been published in the area of Christology (who is Jesus in himself?) and soteriology (what did he do as Saviour?). A number of notable, ecumenical documents on Christian ministry have also appeared. But in all this literature there is surprisingly little reflection on the priesthood of Christ, from which derives all ministry, whether the priesthood of all the faithful or ministerial priesthood. This present work aims to fill that gap by examining, in the light of the Scriptures and the Christian tradition, what it means to call Christ our priest. Beginning with a study of the biblical material, the book then moves to the witness to Christ's priesthood coming from the fathers of the Church, Thomas Aquinas, Luther and Calvin, the Council of Trent, the seventeenth-century 'French School', John Henry Newman, Tom Torrance and the Second Vatican Council. The two concluding chapters describe and define in twelve theses the key characteristics of Christ's priesthood and what sharing in that priesthood, through baptism and ordination, involves.

Book Synopsis Melchizedek by : John L. Mastrogiovanni
Download or read book Melchizedek written by John L. Mastrogiovanni and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most relevant spiritual issues of this hour concerns the contrast between Grace vs. Law, Faith vs. Works and Good vs. Evil. Up until now, Christians have tried to balance the one with the other, and in doing so, unknowingly diluted the revelation of the Gospel at its core. Adding to our struggle to touch humanity with the message of Christ, it seems that the unbeliever is wise to the conflict, thus having no desire to embrace the frustration such religiosity brings to spirituality. For us, the Church at large, to resolve such contrasts and settle the conflict of religiosity and spirituality, we must rethink and embrace the high-priestly ministry found in Christ Jesus, known as the Order of Melchizedek. When we think of being kings and priests as the scripture states, many times we see the Aaronic high-priest going into the Holies of Holies sacrificing a lamb for the sins of the people. But in the New Testament, quoting King David from Psalms, we read that Jesus is a high priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek. So why do we insert Christ into the practice of the Aaronic or Levitical priesthood? Who is Melchizedek? How is this Melchizedekian order different from the Aaronic order? Surely Christ (the Messiah) is not a high-priest that has a dagger in His hand slaying a lamb... The scripture adds that there's much to say about this Melchizedek, but it's difficult to explain. Why? Could it be that in Melchizedek, the Mosaic Law, its commandments and its temple aren't applicable in the way we have traditionally applied them? If so, what does holy living look like? Within the pages of "Melchizedek, Our Gracious King-Priesthood in Christ," we will discover the enigmas regarding this king-priesthood, which is founded in the very origins of creation and the Garden of Eden. Thus, if Adam partaking of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil brought the fall and death to humanity, why do we Christians believe that the preaching of good and evil will bring Life? This study-book can change how we perceive everything in both the physical and spiritual world as we know it, and open up the realty of the priesthood we have in Christ because we, too, are of the order of Melchizedek!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the declining numbers of priests in the Catholic Church, the priesthood of the faithful, as defined in Lumen Gentium of Vatican II, is a sign of hope for the future of the church. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set apart. 1 Peter 2:9. Growing numbers of ecclesial lay ministers are helping fulfill the needs of the Body of Christ. This book gives innovative suggestions for an expanded role of the laity in the mission of the Church.
Book Synopsis Theology of the Priesthood by : Jean Galot
Download or read book Theology of the Priesthood written by Jean Galot and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of Vatican II, in 1965, more active involvement of the laity has led many people to wonder about the priestಙs place in the Church. In this masterful work, theologian Jean Galot, S.J., clarifies the nature of the priesthood. He explains how the Jewish priesthood, the perfect priestly ministry of Jesus, and the role of the Twelve help us understand the ministerial priesthood. He considers how the ಜpriesthood of the faithfulಝ and the ministerial priesthood relate to each other, and how the latter is, by Godಙs design, necessary for the former. Theology of the Priesthood carefully examines the priestಙs role as minister of sacrifice and the sacraments, prophet of the Word, and leader of the Church. These and other aspects are summed up, according to Galot, in the priestಙs ministry as shepherd. This ministery is itself a sharing in Jesusಙ role as Shepherd: ಜThe priest does not draw the inspiration for his pastoral zeal from his own feelings, from his own personal resolve to create a better worldಝ, Fr. Galot writes. ಜHe is shepherd on the strength of Godಙs pastoral intention and represents specifically Christ the shepherd. Consequently, he is called upon to fulfill his pastoral mission not according to ideas of his own and his own personal ambitions, but in keeping with Godಙs own dispensation and the design of salvation devised by the Father and carried out by Christ. Like Jesus himself, the priest is at the service of the Father.ಝ The book also explores the spiritual life of priests, including the role of celibacy. It concludes with a discussion demonstrating that the male character of the ministerial priesthood is based on the will of Jesus and is not contrary to womenಙs dignity on their role in the Church.
Book Synopsis On the Priesthood by : Matthew Levering
Download or read book On the Priesthood written by Matthew Levering and published by Sheed & Ward. This book was released on 2003-08-18 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversy about the Catholic priesthood is nothing new. Just like laity, priests (including bishops and popes) have always been sinners. Some priests, like some laity, have caused grave scandal throughout the 2000-year history of the Church. Two questions arise from this reality. Why did Jesus Christ establish a ministerial priesthood for his Church, if the priesthood would sometimes cause scandal—what did he intend for the priesthood? Second, what has the Catholic Church in past times done about scandal in the priesthood—how has the Church corrected its priests and encouraged priests to lead lives of holiness? Amidst the noisy din of talking heads and self-proclaimed experts, this book offers solid warnings and directions about the priesthood from 15 saints of the past two millennia. On the Priesthood serves as a readable guide for priests, seminarians, and educated readers seeking to learn more about the simultaneous unworthiness and dignity of the priesthood. Always challenging and penetrating, the selections unite around one key point; the need for holiness.

Download or read book The Theology of Priesthood written by Donald J. Goergen and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By engaging in conversation with those whose experience, perspectives, and theological traditions vary from their own, the contributors to The Theology of Priesthood explore in detail the fundamental questions being asked about the ordained priesthood today. Priests, deacons, and students of theology will find these articles an engaging means to understanding Church, ministry, and priesthood more deeply. The Theology of Priesthood includes ten essays that explore facets of ordained ministry and the ministerial priesthood. Paul Philibert, OP, begins with an overview of issues involved in the contemporary discussion on priesthood within the Roman Catholic tradition. Frank Quinn, OP, addresses the significance of language as it pertains to priesthood and ministry and how language is manifested in rites of ordination. Thomas O'Meara, OP, situates the discussion on priesthood within the context of an expansion of ministry in the Church since Vatican II and the implications of this expansion for ministry in the future. Stephen DeLeers articulates a theology of priesthood grounded in Vatican II and post-Vatican II documents which focuses on the primacy of preaching. Thomas Rausch, SJ, then takes up the issue of diversity within ministerial priesthood as he reflects on priesthood within the context of apostolic religious life. Jack Risley, OP, returns to the question of the relationship between ordained ministry and lay ministry. The final three articles reflect on ordained ministry from distinctive perspectives. Benedict Ashley, OP, takes the Letter to the Hebrews as his starting point. Paul Wesche looks at priesthood through the lens of an Eastern Orthodox priest. Donald Goergen, OP, asks what insights African theology, specifically African Christology, might offer a contemporary Catholic theology of priesthood. Paul Philibert, OP, provides a concluding reflection. Donald J. Goergen, OP, is a preacher, teacher, lecturer, author, and theologian who taught systematic theology for many years. He was also previously the provincial for the Dominican friars of the Central Province. He is the editor of A Theology of Jesus series, and Being a Priest Today published by Liturgical Press.
Book Synopsis The Widening Circle by : Graham Tomlin
Download or read book The Widening Circle written by Graham Tomlin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Widening Circle, Graham Tomlin explores an exhilarating new approach to priesthood. he author suggests that 'priest' is much more than a term to describe certain Christian ministers -- it is a vital category for understanding God's way of blessing his world. This world was made for joy: the joy of God and the joy of creation. But to know that joy, the world needs the divine blessing that is focused in Jesus Christ, the only true high priest. His priestly ministry consists of mediating between God and the world, perfecting that very creation, and then offering this perfected creation back to the God from whom it came. Yet this very ministry is enacted through others. As we explore how this priesthood of Christ has an impact on everyday life, we discover that the human race is chosen to play a priestly role between God and creation. The church is then called out to be a kingdom of priests, enabling humanity to fulfil its divine calling. And, finally, the minister himself or herself -- experiencing as Christ did, both strands of priestly reality, the mundane and the heavenly, the routine and the remarkable, the normal and the numinous -- is called to enable the rest of the Church to play its distinct part. In each case, the part is the means by which the whole becomes all that it is intended to be, in an ever widening circle of divine blessing, so that the world might know the joy for which it was created.
