Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book springs from the pronounced reaction of the several thousand men I have trained under conditions of combat realism, and from my own convictions of its necessity. The chapters to follow speak for many. In the support of realism in training, I have experienced strong and genuine support from those above and below me. The only point of argument has been: "How best to implement realism?" This text deals with implementation. Its primary mission is to provide imaginative ideas, acknowledging that no single person, service, or staff has a monopoly on imagination. The men who have experienced the measures of realism I projected in training, have always wanted and asked for more--not in degree--but in more hours and days of it. Realistic training is dangerous, unless carefully controlled. This training is conducted under rigid control and safety supervision. Of the very few "casualties" resulting from the variety of courses and exercises I have conducted, I became the only serious hospital case. Of negative reaction, there were two soldiers who foolishly blasted a tree down on themselves and swore to get the author for creating a course that would kill them. Battles are fought by rifle squads, tank crews and companies, artillery batteries and battalions, combat engineer platoons, and multiplied combinations of these elements. This text is devoted to the training of these men and those who immediately support them. This text is not designed to develop strategy, or tactics, but to help these units"--Preface.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to adapt drill development guidelines so that they would be suitable for use by armor units, to incorporate tactical platoon leader training into these guidelines, and to implement the revised methodology for drill development by preparing a set of drills for tank platoons and leadership exercises for tank platoon leaders. A review was conducted of the drill development guidelines prepared by ARI and by TRADOC. The need for modified and new guidelines for armor training was determined. Supplemental guidelines were prepared including guidelines for the preparation of tactical leadership exercises for platoon leaders, and the guidelines were implemented in the preparation of a prototype battle exercise comprised of tank platoon drills and platoon leader exercises. In addition, assistance was provided to the ARI Field Unit at Fort Knox and to the Directorate of Training Development of the U.S. Army Armor School in the preparation of armor platoon drills based on the Division 86 concept.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the formulation of doctrine since World War II. In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. One means of doing so is to pay particular attention to the business of how the Army's doctrine has developed historically, with a view to improving methods of future development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the human factors issues associated with the development, testing, and implementation of helmet-mounted display technology in the 21st Century Land Warrior System. Because the framework of analysis is soldier performance with the system in the full range of environments and missions, the book discusses both the military context and the characteristics of the infantry soldiers who will use the system. The major issues covered include the positive and negative effects of such a display on the local and global situation awareness of the individual soldier, an analysis of the visual and psychomotor factors associated with each design feature, design considerations for auditory displays, and physical sources of stress and the implications of the display for affecting the soldier's workload. The book proposes an innovative approach to research and testing based on a three-stage strategy that begins in the laboratory, moves to controlled field studies, and culminates in operational testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is about winning in combat. Winning requires many things: excellence in techniques, an appreciation of the enemy, exemplary leadership, battlefield judgment, and focused combat power. Yet these factors by themselves do not ensure success in battle. Many armies, both winners and losers, have possessed many or all of these attributes. When we examine closely the differences between victor and vanquished, we draw one conclusion. Success went to the armies whose leaders, senior and junior, could best focus their efforts-their skills and their resources-toward a decisive end. Their success arose not merely from excellence in techniques, procedures, and material but from their leaders' abilities to uniquely and effectively combine them. Winning in combat depends upon tactical leaders who can think creatively and act decisively.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is evident to virtually everyone that future military operations will include urban operations far more often than not. In fact, operations in densely populated, built-up areas already frequently dominate U.S. armed forces deployments. Over the past decade, Service training initiatives have reflected a renewed interest in preparing for such contingencies. However, members of Congress have expressed concern that these efforts were insufficiently coordinated. Therefore, Congress requested that a study be conducted of how the military community might better orchestrate its resources to improve readiness for forcewide urban operations. Three sponsors -- the Office of the Secretary of Defense Readiness; J7, U.S. Joint Forces Command; and Joint Urban Operations Office, J9, U.S. Joint Forces Command -- asked the RAND Corporation to undertake the task of developing a joint urban training strategy for the period 2005-2011 to assist in meeting this objective. This monograph presents that strategy. It will be of interest to individuals in the government, nongovernmental organizations, private volunteer organizations, and the commercial sector whose responsibilities include the planning, policy, doctrine, training, funding, and conduct of actions undertaken in or near urban areas in both the immediate future and the longer term. This research was conducted for the Department of Defense within the International Security and Defense Policy Center and the Forces and Resources Policy Center of the RAND National Defense Research Institute, a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff, the Unified Combatant Commands, the Department of the Navy, the Marine Corps, the defense agencies, and the defense Intelligence Community.
