Book excerpt: The power to witness effectively in these troubled times is the basis for this book in which Speaks challenges today's church to offer more than pep pills of personal piety, laxatives of racial tolerance, and the surgery of social revolution. Speaks dares the church to build temples of love on the dung hills of hate, to build a new community of brotherhood upon the shifting sands of racism, and to build a new society of peace upon the wastelands of human strife.

Book excerpt: How did Pentecostalism become the fastest growing movement within Christendom in the twentieth century? Faupel contends that Pentecostalism was propelled onto the world stage when early adherents felt commissioned by God to announce that Christ would soon return to establish his kingdom on earth. The gift of tongues would equip them supernaturally to proclaim this message to the nations in the language of the people. Although this expectation was soon disproved, the eschatological hope nevertheless remained the motivating force for Pentecostalism’s rapid growth. This book has been prescribed reading on the Pentecostal hope for many years. This edition makes it available once again to a worldwide readership.

Worship changes through the seasons, from Christmas, through Lent and Easter, and beyond. The way worship relates to your church’s mission should change, too. This book explores those seasonal changes by examining both worship and mission as aspects of union with Christ. Just as we are to follow Christ through the various stages of his life and work in worship during the church year, we can follow him in our mission through these same stages of his life and work.

This is a question that Laurence Wood has taken up as his concern throughout his career. In order to honor his work, this collection takes up this question through a series of essays designed to show how Wesleyan Theology, while distinctive, has a continued relevance to the wider world of theological scholarship. This collection does this in two ways. First, by showing how the Wesleyan distinctives have been present throughout the history of theology. And secondly, the collection brings the Wesleyan distinctives into conversation with various contemporary theological conversations, ranging from theological hermeneutics and the science-religion dialogue to the practice of preaching and spirituality. The result is a volume that puts Wesleyan theology into continued dialogue with the broader theological world, showing its vitality and importance for the contemporary situation.

Book excerpt: Why read Dove's Song? The world is fascinated with Aliens from other planets. Also, this book handles our concerns: 1. Market Crash 2. Recession 3. Loss of Jobs 4. Unwed Pregnancies 5. Late Term Abortions 6. Secular Churches 7. Dirty Water 8. Power Failure 9. Food Shortages 10. Anthrax 11. Bad Parenting 12. Media Immorality We read to entertain and for our help. Short Synopsis: I promised Dove I'd write this true story. In June, early in the twenty-first century, I, Elias Rees, ranch owner in rural Oklahoma, heard strange music at my buffalo wallow; but nowhere else. I saw no one. That day the Superintendent at Buffalo Community High School fired me from teaching the new Quantum Physics. Teaching made me forget the market crash, food shortages, the recession; even about losing custody of my beloved daughter, Fleur, to my former wife, Thora. I lost my fight with the Superintendent, too. Why oh why didn't I choose Alice, my high school sweetheart, instead of Thora (flirt turned drunk)? No wonder Fleur got pregnant by a kid named Lewis. My black friend, Gabe, football Coach, Computer Science teacher, and Manager of my ranch, tried to help. Alice urged me to come back to our country church. The minister was all money; no spirituality. The strange music at my buffalo wallow turned out to be the mission statement of beautiful Dove, who saved me from despair. How can I explain this missionary from some faraway place she wouldn't reveal? She wore a body suit with a scarf around her waist, and thongs. Each day when I rode around the ranch checking fences, it wasn't her beauty but her spirituality that brought me peace. I was happy when Thora brought Fleur to live at the ranch, though Fleur was five months pregnant with a son. When Lewis was killed in a suitcase bombing, I tried everything to save my grandson from a late term abortion. But Fleur didn't want a kid with no father. Me losing again? Fleur got sick with anthrax. When Doc gave her only a few days to live, I was devastated. Dove finally got me to pray; to see Fleur as perfect whatever she said or did. For a moment in time I had absolute faith that MIND healed her. Doc's next exam showed her perfectly well. Dove convinced me that MIND can do anything. We danced around the circle of the wallow. Dove hadn't been kissed before. The U.S. was hit with a ballistic missile. Food, water, and power shortages made life miserable. Dove urged sharing with the community my deep well water, fish in my lake, even my cattle; although Gabe warned we might all starve. Despite the horrible drought, Alice's apple pies brought Fleur and me to the July 4th church picnic where Gabe played his guitar. We sang. God, I hated taking Fleur to that abortion Doc. Dove just smiled. 'See her as perfect in MIND's image' It worked before. So, I did. When we got there, Fleur said, 'I can't do this. Let's go home.' We hugged and cried. With Dove's and my help, Fleur had her baby at home. Then Dove admitted she was an alien. Just before Dove vanished for her home on a distant planet near the tail of the Little Dipper, Thora got a picture of Dove's changed body (as she looked on her own planet). Those pictures made Thora (the photographer) and Fleur (the owner of the camera) wealthy. Dove's scarf, which wrapped the baby, was woven of threads never found on earth. It was bought and displayed in the U.S. Museum of History in Washington, D.C. The Wall Street Journal's article and most of the media accepted Dove's validity. At nine months, my grandson, Zane, loves riding horseback. I hold him in front of me as I check the cattle. When Alice's husband passed on, she and I were happily married. The whole Buffalo Community is coming out of the depression with the faith of Dove's messages. On my Web site for all questions about Dove, I have answered people from thirty-seven nations. A music arranger taped Dove's song,

Book excerpt: "Odette Mainville's...book, The Spirit in Luke-Acts, is a most careful, enlightening, and fresh interpretation of the Holy Spirit's Role in Luke and Acts, from the surprising starting point of a single verse, Acts 2:33...I wholeheartedly endorse this book...." -William S. Kurz, S.J., Emeritus Professor of New Testament, Marquette University "...As someone who has devoted a whole book to a theological exposition of Acts 2:33, I regard this as a most worthwhile endeavor. What emerges is a work that engages fully with the Spirit's vitality in the life of Jesus and in the mission of the church...." -William P. Atkinson, PhD, Senior Lecturer, London School of Theology "...I warmly recommend this insightful reading of Luke-Acts to you. It is filled with interesting exegesis and challenging observations....I trust that you will find this book as enjoyable, enriching, and edifying as I did." -Robert P. Menzies, PhD, Missionary-Scholar (China), from the foreword "Mainville's...work...integrates the central theme in Luke-Acts, in a way that traditional systematic theology does not, viz, Jesus's experiences with the Spirit toward the end of creating a 'community of prophets'..." -Jon Mark Ruthven, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Regent University School of Divinity "...Using a redactional and literary approach, Mainville demonstrates that the role of the Holy Spirit is not to be relegated to a mere appendage of Pauline soteriology..." -James B Shelton, PhD, Professor of New Testament, Oral Roberts University Mainville's work is helpful both for its engagement with traditional approaches and for its fresh contributions and insights....This is surely a welcome study." -Craig S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon the answers which thinkers give to the question What is Man? depend on the answers they give to every other question--hence the importance of this matter in the world's life and future. Much that is current in theological discussion centers in the same inquiry. It is evident that the Christian must know what the Bible says: and Dr. Ryder Smith is supremely qualified to expound the Bible teaching. The author finds that the Doctrine of Man is implied rather than stated in Holy Writ: he has made it his task to draw out the doctrine, largely by examining the meaning of the Hebrew and Greek terms. He has included a treatment of the Septuagint, because the New Testament usually starts with the Septuagintal use. There is special treatment of the important phrase The Image of God, so frequently encountered in current theological discussion. this is the more advantageous because, Dr. Ryder Smith maintains, the usage has changed since the days of the Bible writers. There are chapters on What ought a man to be? as well as on What is a man?-- and to the writer the former question is the more important. This book, which seeks to put in its right perspective the whole question of the Biblical doctrine of Man, will take its place as the classical and fundamental treatment of this doctrine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a culture intrigued by various forms of “spirituality,” this study invites readers to explore the deep, historically rooted resources of the Christian spiritual classics. It is an invitation to seek the transformative presence of God – the kingdom of God within our hearts – through the spiritual classics. These classics, formed in the matrix of meditation on Scripture, are like road maps that provide invaluable wisdom and guidance for the spiritual journey. Illustrating the importance of theologically grounded spirituality, A Luminous Life draws from Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant classics that stem from rich trinitarian and christological reflection. This book explores key themes in the spiritual classics, including biblical images and historical models of spiritual development, prayer, fasting, solitude and community, the cross and suffering, the desert, spiritual direction, and contemplation and action. This study seeks to bridge the academic and ecclesial, demonstrating that the life of the mind and life in the Spirit are unified, that theological reflection and spiritual formation go together. Considering exemplary writings from diverse traditions, such as the Desert Fathers, Maximus the Confessor, Teresa of Avila, and John Calvin, A Luminous Life draws readers into worshipful reflection on God and formation in Christ. The book concludes with the encouragement to ongoing, prayerful study of the spiritual classics: as fuel for the luminous life.

Book excerpt: God targets man and visits him from morning until evening and from evening until morning. Continually and from all eternity, God waits patiently at the door of man’s heart, and when He finds a tiny opening, namely, a little humility and gratitude, He enters in, and of course, when He does, He makes a feast with man. The book of Revelation calls this first visit of God ‘our first love’. This is the beginning of our walk with God, and we must always be mindful of walking worthily…

The author tries to see how the poem arose in an inspired mind, by what processes of divination its author explored the realm of supernatural truth, how he used the images of his Old Testament faith and gave them fresh meaning in the context of his scheme. Here the reader may follow the workings of a late first-century Christian imagination in which the Scriptures and the stars, the liturgy of the temple and the magic of numbers, the elements of nature and the march of human history are closely interwoven.

Book excerpt: In Worship, Its Theology and Practice, Jean-Jacques von Allmen establishes the broader framework of a doctrine of worship, to then see how it can be applied in practice. The book's two parts, 'Problems of Principle' and 'Problems of Celebration' allows for a holistic approach to worship in all its forms. Covering a wide range of liturgical study, von Allmen places regular Sunday worship in its historical and theological context, affirming its nature as the 'recapitulation of the history of salvation' and a sacred sign of Christ's presence, while fully acknowledging its practical role in building the Church. At its core, Worship, Its Theology and Practice envisions an experience of worship with deeper participation and simple obedience to Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the nature of God and creativity from the author of the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, with an introduction by Madeleine L’Engle. From the first pages of Genesis, it is clear that God and man share one vital trait: the ability to create great works out of nothing. More than any other group, artists feel impelled to create, and this urge brings them closer to God. By contemplating the creative drive of humanity, we can better understand the works of God, and by reading deeply into the tenets of Christianity, we can better understand the creative spirit of man. Dorothy L. Sayers explores the concept of the Holy Trinity within the context of invention: the creative idea, the creative energy, and the creative power. In this searching, wide-ranging treatise, one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century shows us what it means to be an artist—and what it takes to make humankind.

Morgan told me after that sermon, “You must free yourself from the manuscript.” I couldn’t imagine doing that, and asked Morgan for help. Our journey continued for fifteen years. I shared my sermons (written and video) with Morgan and we engaged in conversations about preaching, congregations, struggles, God, and life. Join us and watch as I learn to preach, Morgan shares a lifetime of wisdom with me, and we both receive the blessing of friendship and sharing ministry. For anyone who presumes to preach, and those who listen to their sermons, this book peeks behind the screen to the place where sermons are made.
