Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 128: June-July 1948 The number of layers on farms at the beginning of 1948 was 1 percent less than at the beginning of 1947. During the first half of this year the rate of culling was somewhat greater than a year earlier because of less favorable relationships between feed prices and egg prices. By June, the number of layers on farms was 4 percent less than in June 1947. The rate of production per bird during the first half of 1948, however, was at a record level. Total egg production during the first 6 months of 1948 was smaller than a year earlier by only 2 percent. Egg production will decrease. Seasonally through November. Output during the second half of the year will continue below 1947; however, it will be augmented'by the somewhat large r storage holdings of shell eggs which were accumulated during the second quarter of 1948. On July 1, the holdings of shell eggs in the United States totaled million cases compared with million cases on July 1, 1947. Consequently, supplies of eggs for consumption during the remainder of 1948 will be nearly as great as a year earlier.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 31: July 1, 1939 The poultry and egg situation in June showed little improvement over previous months of this year, reports the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Prices of' eggs were at the lowest level since 1931] and prices of chickens were lower than at any time since the winter of 1937. The lower prices this year than last reflect chiefly larger seasonal marketings of chickens and eggs and larger storage stocks of these products. A recent supporting factor to eggrprices has been the purchase of cars of eggs by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation for relief distribution. The feed egg price ratio continues much less favorable for farmers than a year earlier. Receipts of eggs at the four markets New York, Chicagp, Philadelphia and Boston have been declining seasonally but continue above last year. Since late May, combined storage holdings of shell and frozen eggs have been above last year. By August 1 holdings may be 5 to 10 percent larger than on that date last year. The number of chickens from this year's hatchings in farm flocks on June 1 was about 3 percent larger than on that date in 1938 as compared with 5 percent above last year on May 1. On the basis of past relationships be tween changes in numbers of chickens on January 1 and changes in number of chicks and young chickens the preceding June 1, the size of laying flocks on January 1, 19110 may be little if any larger than'in i939. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 169: Jan. 26, 1954 Several factors figure in this season's very moderate seasonal de cline. The low stocks of frozen egg are one of these factors. January 1 stocks of frozen egg were only M2 million pounds, even smaller than the small holdings of 50 million pounds on January 1, 1953, and considerably below the 67 million pounds of January 1, 1952. Because of the low current level of stocks, egg breaking in large volume probably will begin early in the season. If that occurs, a part of the seasonal surplus of eggs will be diverted before it becomes a serious price-depressing influence. Also affecting the situation is the long-time trend toward evening out seasonal variation in egg production, and with it a corresponding evening out of seasonal price changes. This has resulted largely from the increased rates of lay per hen in the fall. Rates of lay in the spring have increased relatively little. Partly as a result of the seasonal evening-out process, egg produc tion in the next few months is likely to exceed 1953 by only small margins. The possible increase will be due chiefly to the 3 percent increase from last year in January 1 numbers of potential layers on farms. Rates of lay are not likely to be significantly above a year ago. Production in October December 1953 was 6 percent higher than a year earlier, with the increased rate of lay the principal reason for the increase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 36: December 4, 1939 Market receipts of dressed poultry have been increasing seasonally to take care of the holiday demand. The into-storage movement for poultry is now well under way, and stocks at the 26 major storing cities on November 25 were 6 percent larger than at the same time last year. Supplies of poultry during the remainder of 1939 and early l9uo will continue larger than in the corresponding period of the 1938-39 marketing season. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 132: January 1949 Production of eggs in the fall and winter months has increased relative to spring. This change is due to the faster increase in rate of lay per bird in the october-january period compared with other months of the year. The upward trend in the rate of lay is primarily the result of progress in breeding and flock management. With this uptrend, the Nation's current egg requirements are being met with fewer layers than in earlier years, even when the increase in population is considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 86: February 1944 Weather so far this winter has been conducive to unusually high rates of egg production per layer. In the North Central States, rates of production prevailed on February 1 which are not usually reached until March 1. The average number of eggs laid per bird during January was 11 percent higher than a year earlier. With the record number of layers on farms, 17 percent more eggs were produced than during January l9uj. Although more eggs were used for noncivilian purposes in January than in January last year, civilian consumption apparently was considerably larger than in January 1933. Some retail egg prices in mid-february were a little higher than a year earlier despite increased movement of eggs into civilian channels, indicating a record strong demand for eggs for this season of the year. Supplies of eggs at prevailing prices have accumulated at some markets during the last several weeks largely because production has been timed with the weather while most seasonal uses storing, drying, and hatching are timed with the calendar. From late December 19h} to February 19, 19h the War Food Administration purchased 233,53h cases of shell eggs for price support purposes. Egg production will increase less than seasonally from the relatively high level of January and early February to the annual seasonal peak in April, while civilian demand may strengthen further as a result of seasonally reduced meat supplies.
