Book Synopsis Rich Man's War, Poor Man's Fight by : Jeanette Keith
Download or read book Rich Man's War, Poor Man's Fight written by Jeanette Keith and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I, thousands of rural southern men, black and white, refused to serve in the military. Some failed to register for the draft, while others deserted after being inducted. In the countryside, armed bands of deserters defied local authorities; capturing them required the dispatch of federal troops into three southern states. Jeanette Keith traces southern draft resistance to several sources, including whites' long-term political opposition to militarism, southern blacks' reluctance to serve a nation that refused to respect their rights, the peace witness of southern churches, and, above all, anger at class bias in federal conscription policies. Keith shows how draft dodgers' success in avoiding service resulted from the failure of southern states to create effective mechanisms for identifying and classifying individuals. Lacking local-level data on draft evaders, the federal government used agencies of surveillance both to find reluctant conscripts and to squelch antiwar dissent in rural areas. Drawing upon rarely used local draft board reports, Selective Service archives, Bureau of Investigation reports, and southern political leaders' constituent files, Keith offers new insights into rural southern politics and society as well as the growing power of the nation-state in early twentieth-century America.

Download or read book Rich Man's War written by David Williams and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rich Man's War historian David Williams focuses on the Civil War experience of people in the Chattahoochee River Valley of Georgia and Alabama to illustrate how the exploitation of enslaved blacks and poor whites by a planter oligarchy generated overwhelming class conflict across the South, eventually leading to Confederate defeat. This conflict was so clearly highlighted by the perception that the Civil War was "a rich man's war and a poor man's fight" that growing numbers of oppressed whites and blacks openly rebelled against Confederate authority, undermining the fight for independence. After the war, however, the upper classes encouraged enmity between freedpeople and poor whites to prevent a class revolution. Trapped by racism and poverty, the poor remained in virtual economic slavery, still dominated by an almost unchanged planter elite. The publication of this book was supported by the Historic Chattahoochee Commission.

Download or read book Rich Man Poor Man written by Adam Carolla and published by Crown/Archetype. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you turn on the evening news or listen to NPR you’ll be bombarded with a non-stop parade of commentators pontificating on the ever expanding gap between the rich and the poor. But is the chasm really that wide? In Rich Man Poor Man, comedian and bestselling author Adam Carolla exposes the phenomena that are embraced by the really rich and the really poor--but never the middle class--like having an outdoor shower, wearing your pajamas all day, or always having your dog with you. Combining Adam's inimitable comedic voice and four-color illustrations by his friend Michael Narren, Rich Man Poor Man is a hilariously accurate look at what the people born with silver spoons in their mouths have in common with the people whose only utensils are plastic sporks stolen from a Shakey's.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Hell by : Christopher M. Date
Download or read book Rethinking Hell written by Christopher M. Date and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most evangelical Christians believe that those people who are not saved before they die will be punished in hell forever. But is this what the Bible truly teaches? Do Christians need to rethink their understanding of hell? In the late twentieth century, a growing number of evangelical theologians, biblical scholars, and philosophers began to reject the traditional doctrine of eternal conscious torment in hell in favor of a minority theological perspective called conditional immortality. This view contends that the unsaved are resurrected to face divine judgment, just as Christians have always believed, but due to the fact that immortality is only given to those who are in Christ, the unsaved do not exist forever in hell. Instead, they face the punishment of the "second death"--an end to their conscious existence. This volume brings together excerpts from a variety of well-respected evangelical thinkers, including John Stott, John Wenham, and E. Earl Ellis, as they articulate the biblical, theological, and philosophical arguments for conditionalism. These readings will give thoughtful Christians strong evidence that there are indeed compelling reasons for rethinking hell.
Book Synopsis Rich Man Poor Man in Proverbs by : Henry Trocino
Download or read book Rich Man Poor Man in Proverbs written by Henry Trocino and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author covers the theme of poverty and prosperity in the book of Proverbs. Money is nearer to our hearts than most of us would care to admit. Perhaps it is one reason why Jesus taught about money more than anything. Prosperity pastors tell us to claim the blessing of material prosperity. Yet what does God say about it? Proverbs will set us free from false beliefs about God's will on wealth. The book of Proverbs is not a book of finances. It does not prescribe neat ethical laws governing prosperity and poverty. Instead, Proverbs teaches us tested truths about wealth and want in light of the social reality of Proverbs. It makes us rethink the tribulations of poverty and, yes, even the troubles of prosperity (Prov. 15:16). This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about wealth and want from the book of Proverbs.

Book excerpt: Some of our noted economists now postulate that income and wealth disparities in the United States, which have resulted in declining spending power of the wage and salaried workers of society, will engender perpetuating economic decline. This writing discusses some of the major pitfalls that have enabled this perilous condition to prevail as control of the electoral process has fallen victim to the power of money, a condition which impedes equality of opportunity for the workers and endangers sustainability of a vibrant free-enterprise economy.
Book Synopsis Christ's Object Lessons—Illustrated by : Ellen G. White
Download or read book Christ's Object Lessons—Illustrated written by Ellen G. White and published by Digital Inspiration. This book was released on 1941 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage Edition—Over 100 illustrations of a century ago. Unabridged, original text consisting of inspiring and profound lessons from the stories and parables which Jesus told. Christ the Great Teacher gave much of His instruction as He walked with His disciples through the hills and valleys of Palestine or rested by the lake or river. In His parable teaching He linked divine truth with common things and incidents, as may be found in the experiences of the shepherd, the builder, the tiller of the soil, the traveler, and the homemaker. Familiar objects were associated with thoughts true and beautiful—thoughts of God’s loving interest in us, of the grateful homage that is His due, and of the care we should have one for another. Thus lessons of divine wisdom and practical truth were made forcible and impressive. The Scripture says, “All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; . . . that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.” Matt. 13:34, 35. Natural things were the medium for the spiritual; the things of nature and the life-experience of His hearers were connected with the truths of the written word. Leading thus from the natural to the spiritual kingdom, Christ’s parables are links in the chain of truth that unites man with God, and earth with heaven. In this volume the parables are grouped according to their subjects, and their lessons are developed and illustrated. The book is full of gems of truth, and to many readers it will give a richer meaning to the common surroundings of everyday life.
