Book excerpt: Poetry. The poems in THE HOUSES ALONG THE WALL create a fictional history for sixteen of the houses along the Parrog near Newport, Pembrokeshire. From a man who quits drinking to marry his love, the life of ferryman Jack Price, Belgian immigrants, the disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh and Ondara House to a poem about a final resting place outside St Mary's Church, Newport. Together these poems celebrate a disappearing Welsh community through wonderful atmospheric poems which paint an authentic picture of life and scenery along the Parrog coastline. Two of the poems, "In His Cups" and "The Last House on the River," were set to music and performed by Roddy Williams at the Wigmore Hall for its At Lunch season in 2014, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

This for me was to complete the walk on the coastal path that completely envelopes the county of Pembrokeshire and, in doing so, to create a written and visual record of that journey. The history and mythology that engulf this little peninsular jutting out into the Irish Sea have always fascinated me, and I consider myself fortunate to be able to share the tale with you.

Book excerpt: Photographing Pembrokeshire: A Paradise for Pirates leads readers through Pembrokeshire locations frequented by pirates, smugglers, wreckers and others who have exploited the coastline from earliest times to the present day. Ieuan Morris' striking images and fascinating accompanying text in both Welsh and English throw new light on one of Britain's most stunning regions. People have been relocating to Pembrokeshire since the 12th century, not just from other parts of the UK but from all over the globe. Morris discusses notorious historic events and looks at the linguistic and cultural differences that exist across the north-south demarcation known as the 'Landsker Line'. As well as showcasing the county's natural beauty, Morris considers the impact of migration, tourism and industrial pollution. Can Pembrokeshire and its indigenous population survive as we know them today? This book documents this glorious county as it is now and raises questions about its future. Full-color, ilustrated throughout.

Book excerpt: Taken for Pearls is the vibrant and various collection of poems by Tony Curtis, published in 1993. Included are beautiful elegies for relatives and colleagues, as well as fascinating persona poems where characters from history reveal themselves to the reader. Also featured are fine occasional lyrics inspired by domestic incidents, as well as a series of love poems translated from the dialect of the Iraqi Marsh Arabs. Throughout, the clarity and precision of the author's style allows his subjects to shine through. Poems that meditate on the darker moments of history, such as the 1993 Dylan Thomas Prize-winner 'Incident on a Hospital Train from Calcutta, 1944' are counterbalanced by the humour of 'The Captain's Diary', a long poem in the voice of an Edwardian golf club captain. "Taken for Pearls is a powerful and sensuous new collection. Curtis's beautifully structured poems open up OP worlds and draw us in. These are poems to relish, to return to, to live with" Helen Dunmore "I see the colourful density of Tony Curtis's language drawing him towards the praise tradition" Poetry Wales Tony Curtis is Professor of Poetry at the University of Glamorgan where he directs an MPhil in Writing. He has published 26 books, including nine poetry collections. A selection of his poetry has recently been translated and published in Armenia. He is also the editor of several anthologies including After the First Death, a volume of war writing (2007).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1968, The Dragon Has Two Tongues was the first book-length study of the English-language literature of Wales. Glyn Jones (1905–95) was one of Wales’s major English-language writers of fiction and poetry, and the book includes chapters dealing with the work of Dylan Thomas, Caradoc Evans, Jack Jones, Gwyn Thomas and Idris Davies, all of whom the author knew personally. This first-hand knowledge of the writers, coupled with the shrewdness of Glyn Jones’s critical comments, established The Dragon Has Two Tongues as a classic and invaluable study of this generation of Welsh writers. It also contains Glyn Jones’s own autobiographical reflections on his life and literary career, his loss and rediscovery of the Welsh language, and the cultural shifts that resulted in the emergence of a distinctive English-language literature in Wales in the early decades of the twentieth century. This edition of The Dragon Has Two Tongues was edited by Tony Brown, who discussed the book with Glyn Jones before his death in 1995 with unique access to the author’s proposed revisions and manuscript drafts, and it was first published by the University of Wales Press in 2001.
