Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The participants in the planning of an urban development project describe in original essays how the renewal scheme was formulated. City officials, community leaders, a team of planners, and faculty members of the University of Cincinnati worked together in an attempt to create a safe, attractive neighbourhood out of a decaying slum. Organized, applied research involving several disciplines; legally mandated citizen participation; a commitment to establishing a racially integrated neighbourhood: these are some of the elements that made the project unique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaches to urban regeneration have changed dramatically throughout Europe and the USA over recent decades, drawing on notions of public-private partnership, growth coalitions and local spatial alliances. In this engaging book John McCarthy provides critical consideration of such theories in terms of their application to practice. He shows how these notions are used to explain the nature and underlying processes of urban development and to further objectives for urban regeneration. To test their applicability, he examines the case of Dundee, including the role of the Dundee Partnership, a model for many aspects of partnership working. The resulting conclusions suggest ways in which the practice of urban regeneration can be improved in terms of inclusion, equity and sustainability.

Book excerpt: This practical and concrete guide shows you how to establish a collaborative approach in program planning, resource-based learning, teaching information process, and evaluation. It will give you an understanding of the integrated school library program as well as an appreciation of its benefits. After describing changes in the role of the teacher-librarian (or school library media specialist), the authors provide a rationale for creating an active partnership among teachers, librarians, and students. Innovative resource-based units of study for all elementary grades demonstrate how the partnership works in relation to author studies, literary themes, social studies, and science. All projects have been successfully classroom tested. This practical approach will appeal equally to teacher-librarians and classroom teachers. The book can also be used in introductory courses on school library programs and in courses on resource-based learning.

Book excerpt: This handbook explores two guiding questions – how can university-community partnerships in planning education work, and how can they be transformative? University-community partnerships – often referred to as service-learning or community-engaged teaching and learning – are traditionally based on a collaborative relationship between an academic partner and a community-based partner, in which students from the academic partner work within the community on a project. Transformational approaches to university-community partnerships are approaches that develop and sustain mutually beneficial collaborations where knowledge is co-created and new ways of knowing and doing are discovered. This edited volume examines a variety of university-community partnerships in planning education, from a number of different perspectives, with a focus on transformative models. The authors explore broader theoretical issues, including topics relating to pedagogy, planning theory, and curriculum; along with more practical topics relating to best practices, logistics, institutional support, outcome measures, and the various forms these partnerships can take – all through an array of case studies. The authors, which include academics, professional practitioners, academic practitioners, and students, bring an incredible depth and breadth of knowledge and experience from across the globe – Australia, Canada, Chile, Europe (including Germany, Spain, Slovakia, and Sweden), India, Jamaica, South Korea, and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes in detail how to create a strategic plan to identify and meet the requirements of any organization. A solid survey of the techniques of the subject. --Long Range Planning "I′ve finally had an opportunity to read through (this) remarkable guide to strategic planning. (It has) indeed captured the critical elements of this important if messy process. All of this is, of course, applicable to universities, and some of it could even be done without causing riots and revolutions. Every one of us who does university administration should probably read your book, if only to recognize what we are not able to do for lack of good data and good analytical tools." --John V. Lombardi, President, University of Florida "Dr. Kaufman′s approach to strategic planning is new, different, and innovative . . . the target audience of middle managers and executives should find the book an important informational source for achieving organizational and societal objectives. Furthermore, it will probably provide some interesting dialogue at strategic planning sessions." --Melvin T. Stith, Ph.D., Dean, College of Business, Florida State University "Just when the detrimental effects of trendy, short-term, process-oriented management practices are beginning to dramatically weaken altogether too many organizations, along comes Strategic Planning Plus. This book is a solid, reality-based management guide. It is filled with helpful advice and procedures that can improve your odds of doing the right things and doing them well. Reading it will give you a new perspective on the importance and value of planning for organizational success. Putting it to work in your organization can be a driving force in your long-term success." --Wess Roberts, Ph.D., Author, Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun "A fresh approach to a timeworn subject . . . I believe planning is something all managers would like to do better." --Peter Economy, Director of Administration Horizons Technology, Inc., San Diego, California Current strategic planning and development is often too myopic, and much more must be considered before practical planning is accomplished. Filled with fresh, new ideas and proven methods, Strategic Planning Plus covers strategic planning at three levels--micro, macro, and mega--and describes, in detail, how to create a strategic plan to identify and meet the requirements of any organization. This book shows how to identify the direction an organization must take, gives a six-step process for identifying and solving organizational problems, and provides methods for evaluating progress and revising strategic plans. Strategic Planning Plus also contains handy checklists, flowcharts, procedures, and case studies.

Book excerpt: "Urban environments have enormous impacts on health of populations, with close to 80% of the U.S. population living in cities; public health and planning professional are presented real challenges to create the healthiest environment possible. Traditionally, the discipline of urban planning has concerned itself with the built environment -- buildings, roads, utilities, and the like -- while public health concerns itself with the health of people who live in that environment. A major challenge, then, is how to incorporate concerns for health as an integral part of urban planning initiatives, rather than simply measuring the health outcomes after planning decisions have been made. This book now equips public health professionals to participate effectively in the planning process, building positive health outcomes into planning schemes. This book not only provides real guidance on how to solve these issues, but also has case studies that show how effective these policies can be."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most striking characteristics of urban protest and social conflict in the United States, Britain, and other nations of the West over the last three decades is the frequency with which these political events have been organized not where people work, but where they live. The residential communities in which people have their homes, raise their children, and relate to each other more as neighbors than as co-workers have become veritable seedbeds of collective action. Contested Ground provides a new approach to understanding how and why such community-based action occurs. Drawing critically and selectively from Marxian theories of conflict and neo-Weberian theories of "housing classes," John Emmeus Davis argues that the political life of residential communities can be explained largely in terms of the competing interests that groups possess by virtue of different and distinctive ways of relating to their community's "domestic property"land and buildings that are used for shelter. In Part I of his book he proposes domestic property interests as the cornerstone of a theoretical framework for exploring the appearance and disappearance, the development and decline, and the cooperation and conflict of the organized groups of the "homeplace." In Part II he tests the plausibility of this framework against the social and political realities of an inner-city neighborhood known as the West End in Cincinnati, Ohio. A neighborhood shaped by successive waves of priyate investment and disinvestment, city neglect and city planning, urban renewal and gentrification, the domestic property of the West End has been the contested ground from which many community organizations have grown. Using archival records, oral histories, and organizational documents, Davis unfolds the story of the rise and fall of these grassroots groups. Davis's concluding chapters evaluate the theoretical and practical implications of his approach. He believes that his analysis may complement neo-Marxian theories of urban development and capitalist reproduction and also provide new insight into ways in which planners, activists, and policy makers can influence the internal politics of the urban neighborhood.
