Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of Stomata In nearly all instances the experiments herein presented were repeated at, roughly speaking, yearly intervals, and in this way a valuable check upon all the work was obtained. If, as it may appear, but a beginning has been made toward the solution of the difficult problems which have been attacked, I may still venture to hope that the results will prove to be a stimulus to further studies in the same direction. If this has been accomplished, it is due in no small part to the personal concern which my colleagues have shown in this work, and to them, as well as to the Institutions mentioned above, I wish at this point to express my most earnest appreciation. Of these, I would especially mention Dr. Daniel Trembly macdougal, who has through out taken a most generous interest in my studies. The moral support of one's co-workers is frequently no small element in his success. I wish also to thank Prof. E. M. Blake for his help in making certain mathematical interpretations used in the section on transpiration and stomatal action. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Behavior of Stomata This investigation was undertaken to discover what changes take place in the apertures of stomata throughout the day and night, the in uence of physical factors upon such changes, and the final effect upon 'transpiration. Hence the investigation falls naturally into three subdivisions which form the sections of this volume. As previous investigators have usually worked with few plants and in one region, it was felt that considerable light could be thrown upon the subject by using many plants and working in several regions of diverse climate. Experiments which were first carried out at the American Smelting and Refining Company's laboratory near Salt Lake City were therefore continued at the Desert Laboratory at Tucson, Arizona, and at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as at Salt Lake City. A wide range of climate was thus available, since the spring climate of Minneapolis is rather humid, the summer climate of Salt Lake City dry and sometimes hot, and the winter in Tucson dry and warm. For a number of reasons, most of the experiments were made at the Salt Lake laboratory, where the water-content could be controlled readily and the range of humidity and temperature from day to day was almost as great as in the desert. At the outset, careful consideration was given the methods hitherto employed to determine changes in stomatal apertures. The horn and yucca hygroscopes used by Darwin (1898) were properly criticized by Lloyd (1908) as measures of transpiration rather than Of the condition of the stomata. Cobalt-chloride paper is open to the same Objection, and therefore only indirectly throws light upon the opening of the stomata. Petroleum ether, when dropped upon a leaf, passes through it if the stomata are open and some times gives it a water-soaked, translucent appearance. Hence this reagent may be used as a qualitative test for stomatal opening. These methods, however, are no longer in use, and this left but three methods to be considered for the purpose Of the investigation. The substantially revised text is thoroughly up to date and well illustrated with numerous line illustrations, photographs and comprehensive tables. The theory of gaseous diffusion through stomata is reviewed in a new chapter and sections on signal perception and transduction, guard cell ionic relations and guard cell metabolism have been added. A concluding chapter reviews the genetics and molecular biology of stomata. This work provides a comprhensive reference text which will appeal to advanced students, post-graduates and lecturers in plant physiology.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Plant Physiology Plant physiology is an inseparable part of botany. It is closely connected with the study of morphology and anatomy of plants, since without a sufficient knowledge of plant structure an effective study of physiology is hardly possible. Recently plant physiology has been forming connections not only with plant ecology and plant geography but also with taxonomy. Plant physiology is passing gradually from the study of activities common to all plants to a consideration of the physiological distinctions that exist between various groups or even species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical d104-Book of Plant Physiology The arrangement of the subject in the following pages is an effort to place before the student a method by which a working knowledge of the physiological complex of the plant 'may be ac quired. The disposition of the subject matter entailed by this treatment consists, briefly stated, in the study of the particular functions and properties of the organism, in connection with the agencies and forces which influence or initiate them, and a con sideration of the general processes of plant life. To this end the first portion of the book, inclusive of chapters I. - VII., is devoted chiefly to the special forms of irritability exhibited by typical organisms, and the second part is taken up with a more critical consideration of the broader phases of the activity of the plant a treatment of the subject well adapted to the convenience of the independent worker, and to the exigencies of instruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Physiology of Plants English language treating at all fully of the Physiology of Plants, so as to meet the requirements of advanced students, suggested to me, at an early stage in my career as a teacher of the subject, that I should publish my own lecture-notes just sufficiently expanded to make them readable. Of this suggestion, this volume is the outcome. The work of preparation began in 1877, but, on account of the pressure of other duties, it was not until 1882 that it had proceeded far enough to warrant going to press. I hoped at that time to have completed the Lectures within a twelvemonth at longest, but failing health and increasing demands upon my time have extended the period to four years. In consequence of this delay, it will be found that in the earlier Lectures the most recent researches have not been noticed. There will, I hope, be an opportunity to remedy this defect in a subsequent edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
