Book excerpt: "Hypersonics, speeds greater than Mach 5, have the capacity to change how the United States views strategic deterrence, forward presence, and military action. The USAF officially recognizes three principal missions utilizing hypersonics: (1) cruise missiles (2) reentry from space as a boost-glide vehicle, and (3) a high-speed accelerator used as a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) or reusable booster. The ability for the United States in general and the USAF, in particular, to operate offensively is inseparably tied to technology. In order for the US to maintain its offensive style of warfare, it must maintain a technological edge against other nations of the world. The first application of hypersonic technology into air-breathing military operations is the hypersonic cruise missile (HCM). It will re-create the capability gap between US offense and others’ defense and reinstate the dominance of Global Strike. The HCM is the natural evolution of a standoff strategic-bombing doctrine. A non-nuclear HCM provides flexibility to act as a firebreak to nuclear escalation. The US should field an autonomous, precision-guided nuclear and non-nuclear version of the long-range HCM with the intention of replacing current subsonic cruise missiles. The second hypersonic application is boost-glide reentry vehicle. A boost-glide reentry vehicle is expected to have precision accuracy and enable Prompt Global Strike (PGS) concepts, the ability to reach any target on the planet within an hour without relying on forward-based forces. A PGS system could revolutionize how the United States views strategy and reduce reliance on nuclear weapons by providing a range of options to achieve strategic effects, making the President less likely to authorize the use of nuclear weapons. The US should pursue hypersonic boost-glide with the intention of fielding a non-nuclear, intercontinental, PGS system. The third application of hypersonics provides access to space, in the form of reusable, single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO). The best way to achieve SSTO is to allow commercial ventures to develop business-based, cost-effective, reusable SSTO, enabling the flow of goods and services in and through space, allowing a space economy to grow and develop. Low-cost access to space would energize and drive the need for a significant security presence in space. Technological change of this magnitude will not occur without strategic implications. Policy makers and military planners need to consider both as we move forward."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: These three volumes entitled Advances in Hypersonics contain the Proceedings of the Second and Third Joint US/Europe Short Course in Hypersonics which took place in Colorado Springs and Aachen. The Second Course was organized at the US Air Force Academy, USA in January 1989 and the Third Course at Aachen, Germany in October 1990. The main idea of these Courses was to present to chemists, com puter scientists, engineers, experimentalists, mathematicians, and physicists state of the art lectures in scientific and technical dis ciplines including mathematical modeling, computational methods, and experimental measurements necessary to define the aerothermo dynamic environments for space vehicles such as the US Orbiter or the European Hermes flying at hypersonic speeds. The subjects can be grouped into the following areas: Phys ical environments, configuration requirements, propulsion systems (including airbreathing systems), experimental methods for external and internal flow, theoretical and numerical methods. Since hyper sonic flight requires highly integrated systems, the Short Courses not only aimed to give in-depth analysis of hypersonic research and technology but also tried to broaden the view of attendees to give them the ability to understand the complex problem of hypersonic flight. Most of the participants in the Short Courses prepared a docu ment based on their presentation for reproduction in the three vol umes. Some authors spent considerable time and energy going well beyond their oral presentation to provide a quality assessment of the state of the art in their area of expertise as of 1989 and 1991.

Book excerpt: Hypersonics is the study of flight at speeds where aerodynamic heating dominates the physics of the problem. Typically this is Mach 5 and higher. Hypersonics is an engineering science with close links to supersonics and engine design. Within this field, many of the most important results have been experimental. The principal facilities have been wind tunnels and related devices, which have produced flows with speeds up to orbital velocity. Why is it important? Hypersonics has had two major applications. The first has been to provide thermal protection during atmospheric entry. Success in this enterprise has supported ballistic-missile nose cones, has returned strategic reconnaissance photos from orbit and astronauts from the Moon, and has even dropped an instrument package into the atmosphere of Jupiter. The last of these approached Jupiter at four times the speed of a lunar mission returning to Earth. Work with re-entry has advanced rapidly because of its obvious importance. The second application has involved high-speed propulsion and has sought to develop the scramjet as an advanced airbreathing ramjet. Scramjets are built to run cool and thereby to achieve near-orbital speeds. They were important during the Strategic Defense Initiative, when a set of these engines was to power the experimental X-30 as a major new launch vehicle. This effort fell short, but the X-43A, carrying a scramjet, has recently flown at Mach 9.65 by using a rocket. Atmospheric entry today is fully mature as an engineering discipline. Still, the Jupiter experience shows that work with its applications continues to reach for new achievements. Studies of scramjets, by contrast, still seek full success, in which such engines can accelerate a vehicle without the use of rockets. Hence, there is much to do in this area as well. For instance, work with computers may soon show just how good scramjets can become. NASA SP-2007-4232
