It deals with bipolar devices as well as field-effect power transistors. The book provides an up-to-date account of the progress made in power transistor design. This volume consists of three parts. Part I examines general considerations and reviews semiconductor surface theory as a background to understanding surface phenomena. It also discusses the effect of high carrier concentration on the semiconductor properties. Part II deals with bipolar transistors and the basic structures of power transistors. Part III discusses junction field-effect and surface field-effect transistors. This book is written for electrical engineers who design power transistor circuits, device physicists and designers, and university students. The reader should have some familiarity with small signal transistor physics as the presentation is at the senior undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Book excerpt: This report was prepared by the Office of Technology Assessment of the United States Congress to review the health effects of high-voltage transmission lines. For about two decades, there has been some concern about the health effects of electric and magnetic fields produced by transmission lines. Recent studies have heightened this concern. Health effects research is still preliminary and inconclusive, but a growing number of studies suggest that under certain circumstances even relatively weak electric and magnetic fields can produce biologic changes. This report discusses the present state of knowledge on the health effects of low-frequency electric and magnetic fields and describes current U. S. funding levels and research programs. Also, the report provides information on regulatory activity, including existing and proposed field exposure standards.

Book excerpt: In this, the first collection in English of feminist-oriented research on Japanese art and visual culture, an international group of scholars examines representations of women in a wide range of visual work. The volume begins with Chino Kaori's now-classic essay "Gender in Japanese Art," which introduced feminist theory to Japanese art. This is followed by a closer look at a famous thirteenth-century battle scroll and the production of bijin (beautiful women) prints within the world of Edo-period advertising. A rare homoerotic picture-book is used to extrapolate the "grammar of desire" as represented in late seventeenth-century Edo. In the modern period, contributors consider the introduction to Meiji Japan of the Western nude and oil-painting and examine Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and the role of one of its famous artists. The book then shifts its focus to an examination of paintings produced for the Japanese-sponsored annual salons held in colonial Korea. The postwar period comes under scrutiny in a study of the novel Woman in the Dunes and its film adaptation. The critical discourse that surrounded women artists of the late twentieth-century--the "Super Girls of Art"--is analyzed, followed by a consideration of gender ambiguity and cross-gender identification in contemporary anime and manga. Contributors: Grunhild Borggreen, Norman Bryson, Chino Kaori, Doris Croissant, Ikeda Shinobu, Kim Hye-shin, Chigusa Kimura-Steven, Joshua S. Mostow, Sharalyn Orbaugh, David Pollack.

Book excerpt: Joseph Nye coined the term "soft power" in the late 1980s. It is now used frequently—and often incorrectly—by political leaders, editorial writers, and academics around the world. So what is soft power? Soft power lies in the ability to attract and persuade. Whereas hard power—the ability to coerce—grows out of a country's military or economic might, soft power arises from the attractiveness of a country's culture, political ideals, and policies. Hard power remains crucial in a world of states trying to guard their independence and of non-state groups willing to turn to violence. It forms the core of the Bush administration's new national security strategy. But according to Nye, the neo-conservatives who advise the president are making a major miscalculation: They focus too heavily on using America's military power to force other nations to do our will, and they pay too little heed to our soft power. It is soft power that will help prevent terrorists from recruiting supporters from among the moderate majority. And it is soft power that will help us deal with critical global issues that require multilateral cooperation among states. That is why it is so essential that America better understands and applies our soft power. This book is our guide.

Book excerpt: Unique, multi-level textbook is adaptable to introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels This revolutionary textbook takes a unique approach to electromagnetic theory, comparing both conventional and modern theories. It explores both the Maxwell-Poynting representation as well as the Alternate representation, which the author demonstrates is generally simpler and more suitable for analyzing modern electromagnetic environments. Throughout the text, students and researchers have the opportunity to examine both of these theories and discover how each one can be applied to solve problems. The text is divided into four parts: Part I: Basic Electromagnetic Theory includes Maxwell's equations, quasistatics, power and energy, stress and momentum, and electromagnetic wave theorems and principles Part II: Four-Dimensional Electromagnetism includes four-dimensional vectors and tensors and energy-momentum tensors Part III: Electromagnetic Examples includes statics and quasistatics, accelerating charges, plane waves, transmission lines, waveguides, antennas and diffraction, and ferrites Part IV: Backmatter includes a summary, appendices, and references Designed to accommodate a broad range of interests and backgrounds, the text's companion DVD enables readers to reconfigure the material as an introductory-, intermediate-, or advanced-level text. Moreover, the text and its DVD offer a broad range of features that make it possible for readers to quickly grasp new concepts and apply them in practice: Practice problems provide the opportunity to solve real-world problems using electromagnetic theory Forty animations illustrate electric and magnetic field transients Line drawings and computer-generated mathematical figures clarify complex concepts and procedures. Maxima, a powerful symbolic mathematics program, helps readers explore four-dimensional electromagnetic theory as well as perform numerical and graphical analyses Adaptable to multiple levels, this text can be used for both undergraduate and graduate coursework. It is also recommended as a reference for researchers in such fields as electrical engineering, laser physics, materials science, and biomedical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive overview of the development and use of artillery makes the complex artillery systems of today understandable, while at the same time showing how they have evolved and how they are likely to change in the future. The author, until recently chief of artillery for the British Army, is considered one of the world's foremost experts on the subject. Unlike other books that either describe the technical aspects of present-day firepower or outline its history during specific wars, this work provides both a detailed explanation of the modern artillery system and a history of its development over the past six hundred fifty years, identifying its enduring principles and changing practices against an ever-changing background of technology, tactics, and strategy. When an earlier version of this book was published in 1989, it became known as the best single source on field artillery in the English language. This new edition has been fully updated and substantially expanded to cover a wide range of contemporary military debates and the role of firepower, and is certain to be regarded as the ultimate work on the subject for years to come. J. B. A. Bailey assesses major developments over the past decade, analyzing artillery operations in airborne, urban, littoral, desert, jungle, mountain, artic, and nocturnal environments. He examines direct fire, counterfire, the suppression of enemy air defenses, and force protection methods. He explains field artillery from its primitive beginnings to its dominance as an art in World War II and its potent utility in operations since 1945 and into the future. The book will be of particular interest to military historians and those engaged in debating firepower's future. Published in cooperation with the Association of the United States Army. 15 photographs. 8 line drawings. Appendixes. Notes. Bibliography. Index. 7 x 10 inches.
