Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After failing at university, socially isolated and driven by his stuttering to the point of despair, an unexpected encounter with a book about Zen provided a glimmer of hope. Then, little by little his fortune changed, and the stutter - which, previously had posed the greatest obstacle - became the catalyst for the development of a new and profoundly liberating perspective on life. Interwoven with Brocklehurst's personal story, The Perfect Stutter explores the nature of language and verbal communication, the significance of mistakes, and the roles that values and value-judgements play in our lives. In so doing, the book highlights the importance of our deepest desires and their relevance to our understanding of what it means to be a human being. About the Author After his stuttering ceased to be a problem, Paul Brocklehurst returned to university to study Speech Therapy, then Psycholinguistics, and then finally, he completed a doctorate in Experimental Psychology. As a researcher, he is best known for his investigation of the nature of inner speech, the relationship between stuttering and the fear of communication failure, and for his development of the Variable Release Threshold Hypothesis of stuttering. In recent years he has become an active member of the stuttering self-help community and is well known for his promotion of mindfulness in people who stutter and for his work as director of the Stammering Self-Empowerment Programme. After retiring from academic life, he moved to the French Pyrenees where he now divides his time between walking in the mountains, growing organic vegetables, running mindfulness groups, and writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Fraser knew from personal experience what the person who stutters is up against. His introduction to stuttering corrective procedures first came at the age of fifteen under the direction of Frederick Martin, M.D., who at that time was Superintendent of Speech Correction for the New York City schools. A few years later, he worked with J. Stanley Smith, L.L.D., a stutterer and philanthropist, who, for altruistic reasons, founded the Kingsley Clubs in Philadelphia and New York that were named after the English author, Charles Kingsley, who also stuttered. The Kingsley Clubs were small groups of adult stutterers who met one night a week to try out treatment ideas then in effect. In fact, they were actually practicing group therapy as they talked about their experiences and exchanged ideas. This exchange gave each of the members a better understanding of the problem. The founder often led the discussions at both clubs. In 1928 Malcolm Fraser joined his older brother Carlyle who founded the NAPA-Genuine Parts Company that year in Atlanta, Georgia. He became an important leader in the company and was particularly outstanding in training others for leadership roles. In 1947, with a successful career under way, he founded the Stuttering Foundation of America. In subsequent years, he added generously to the endowment so that at the present time, endowment income covers over fifty percent of the operating budget. In 1984, Malcolm Fraser received the fourth annual National Council on Communicative Disorders' Distinguished Service Award. The NCCD, a council of 32 national organizations, recognized the Foundation's efforts in "adding to stutterers', parents', clinicians', and the public's awareness and ability to deal constructively with stuttering." No Miracle Cures breaks down stuttering into many small problems'and shows you how to solve each one.

Book excerpt: This book presents historical perspectives, current political issues, and definition of terms in regard to stuttering, characteristics of the development of stuttering, as well as an overall description of new methods of treatment. It is coauthored by a leading expert in the field and a person who stutters. The stated purpose of this book is to provide information about newer assessment and therapy techniques that have not been widely disseminated. These include combining fluency-enhancing and stuttering modification techniques, the use of Gestalt experiential therapy and principles of 12-step recovery programs, as well as recommendations for treatment of preschool and school-aged children who are beginning to stutter. The authors state that this book is written for speech-language pathologists, for individuals who stutter, and for parents of children who stutter. The first author is well qualified with over 30 years of experience in the field of fluency disorders. The style is straightforward and easy to read. Unique features include a list of self-help organizations that are resources for the person who stutters, the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association Guidelines for Practice in Stuttering Treatment, and a story for group-telling for preschool children at risk for stuttering. This book is a helpful addition to the library of experienced clinicians who want to incorporate recent approaches into fluency treatment, as well as for more junior clinicians who want to learn about a broad array of therapy techniques. The inclusion of basic definitions and fundamental information about stuttering make it a usable resource for the lay person.

Book excerpt: This textbook presents a new paradigm for understanding the nature and treatment of stuttering based on recent discoveries in neuroscience. The authors illustrate how visible stuttering manifestations are actually a solution to a central problem, acting as a compensatory mechanism for a central involuntary block, rather than a problem in themselves. This book features methods that reduce stuttering by inhibiting this central block, through the use of sensory and motor tools, notably mirror neurons, and shows readers that stuttering is not a condition that can be effortlessly "trained out" of the system or eliminated via simple speech retraining.
