The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the perceptions of empowerment and job satisfaction among high school teachers. Selected variables of empowerment were correlated with extrinsic job satisfaction and intrinsic job satisfaction. Procedure . A total of 311 teachers were randomly selected to participate in the study. Data for the study included participant responses from questionnaires on job satisfaction, teacher empowerment and demography. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation which showed statistically significant relationships between empowerment and job satisfaction; canonical analysis which verified that teacher empowerment accounted significantly for variance in job satisfaction, and analysis of variance which showed that no one school was more empowered than the other schools.

Six school systems in the Northeast Tennessee region were used in the study. Of the 600 teachers who were surveyed, 312 responded (52%). The Psychological Empowerment Instrument was used to survey the sample. Research supported the notion that teacher empowerment could be influenced by organizational structure, relationships, communication, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, motivation, job satisfaction, and transformational leadership. Teacher empowerment also involved servant leadership. One research question guided the study. From this question, 12 null hypotheses were generated. Means were compared for the 4 dimensions of the PEI (Meaning, Competence, Impact and Self-Determination). The grouping variables were years of experience, gender, and level of education. ANOVAs and independent samples t tests were computed to evaluate the data. The results of ANOVA and Independent Samples t tests were that there were significant differences in the 4 dimensions with teacher years of experience but not with gender or 3 level of education. Findings suggested that seasoned teachers often showed a higher level of empowerment than beginning teachers. The findings also suggested that gender and level of education did little to influence teacher empowerment in their schools. From the results of the study, conclusions and recommendations for future research were formulated. It was suggested that teachers be involved in a mentoring program. It was also suggested that administrators determine teacher empowerment through faculty assessments and follow up with professional development to ensure the continued empowerment of their staff.

Book excerpt: This study explored the relationship between teacher empowerment and teacher satisfaction for novice and veteran teachers. Research subjects were randomly selected, certificated classroom teachers from sixty secondary school sites located in the states of Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The teachers completed a survey assigned to a registered Internet site that included demographic questions, the School Participant Empowerment Scale, the Teacher Satisfaction Survey, and an open-ended question about empowerment perceptions. The data obtained through the completed surveys were printed from the electronic data collection procedures, coded, and processed using the following statistical analyser Pearson product-moment correlation, stepwise multiple regression, and multivariate analysis of variance. Statistical significance was determined for the three research hypotheses. The first null hypothesis was rejected because a correlation was established between the six dimensions of teacher empowerment and the nine subscales of teacher satisfaction for all teachers in the study. The second null hypothesis was rejected because predictive relationships between the teacher empowerment dimensions and the teacher satisfaction subscales were found for novice teachers, veteran teachers, and all participating teachers. The third null hypothesis was rejected because the multivariate analysis of variance for teacher empowerment showed statistical significance for novice and veteran participants. Two of the nine teacher satisfaction subscales were statistically significant for novice and veteran participants according to the multivariate analysis of variance. The rejection of the three null hypotheses supports the conclusion that a statistically significant relationship does exist between teacher empowerment and teacher satisfaction for novice and veteran teachers. Teacher empowerment, one element associated with teacher satisfaction, can help alleviate the possible loss of significant professional talent in the teaching profession. Teachers constitute the core of the educational system. The retention of competent staff members to maintain a professional academic community is the goal of successful scholastic sites. Administrators, in conjunction with the instructional educators, need to determine the characteristics constituting teacher empowerment that will lead to teacher satisfaction in their district. Individual districts can increase the professional image of teaching through empowerment strategies thereby having a positive effect on teacher satisfaction.
