The price of the horses included grooms. The cash, by the way - miserable, battered. Verdigris-covered coins, apparently compounded of an alloy of tin and dirt - have actually been debased by the Korean Government for illicit profit, while they bear on them such gracious inscriptions as Used for Public Benefit, and Enrich the People. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peoples and Politics of the Far East: Travels and Studies in the British, French, Spanish and Portugues Colonies, Siberia, China, Japan, Korea, Siam and Malaya I did not visit, and in every one I remained long enough, and was fortunate enough in learning the views and experiences of the local authorities and best-informed residents, to make sure at any rate that I was not misled into mere hasty impressions. If I appear to present some of my conclusions with excessive confidence, this fault is to be explained, and I trust excused, first, by my conviction of the importance to Great Britain of the issues involved, and second, by my faith in the accuracy and wisdom of my many informants. Download or read book Politics and Economics in the Russian Far East written by Tsuneo Akaha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics and Economics in the Russian Far East addresses the key issue of what the Russian Far East and its Northeast Asian neighbours can do to further closen economic and co-operative relationships. The question of to what extent the state should intervene to stimulate economic growth in the Russian Far East is covered, as are the options for a more laissez-faire approach. The possibilities for economic co-operation with the more successful market economies of the region are discussed as are the problems and opportunities presented by the exploitation of Russia's vast natural resources. This book will be essential reading for all those wishing to obtain a deeper understanding of the complexity of the issues involved in the development of co-operative relationships between Russia and its Asia-Pacific neighbours.
Book Synopsis Democracy and the Eastern Question by : Thomas Franklin Fairfax Millard
Download or read book Democracy and the Eastern Question written by Thomas Franklin Fairfax Millard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and the Eastern Question: The Problem of the Far East as Demonstrated by the Great War, and Its Relation to the United States of America This work is not presented as a non-partizan or an impartial discussion of the subject. It could not be that, for it embodies the deep convictions formed and accumulated in the course of years of close contact with the matters at issue, and the Opin ions which, I hope, shine through the presentation Of the mate rial were born in the process Of living with the problem. Few foreigners that is, few Westerners could live in the far East during the last twenty years and still be impartial on the questions included in the position Of China and her contacts with Japan. Some Of the facts and much of the criticism presented in the following pages were suppressed or repressed during the Great War for reasons at times connected with the war politics of nations. And at times because of legal restraints upon their publication. That time Of restricted publicity has passed with the need, or the fancied need for it, and foreign residents of China and Japan now feel that the truth, and nothing less than the whole truth, about these matters should be known to Western peoples. The design of this work, therefore, is to present the case as it appears to an overwhelming majority of foreign residents of the East. I have not encumbered the book by giving much of the contrary side of events and of the contrary arguments. As in the case of Germany and the re sponsibility of the German military party for the Great War, the evidence is decisively preponderating, although in this case Japan, like Germany, can put in a more or less plausible de fense. I leave that defense to the extensive Japanese props ganda in America and elsewhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
