Book excerpt: In this study of Pennsylvania and the War of 1812, the author sees the political ambitions of the Republicans, rather than economic, diplomatic or expansionist motives as the primary impetus for the outbreak of the war. Fearful of the Federalists' growing strength, the Republicans exploited the friction with England to maintain their power and to secure the reelection of Madison to the presidency. In this strategy, Victor A. Sapio shows, Pennsylvania played a crucial but hitherto unrecognized part. The strongest Republican state, its politicians influential in their party's stance, Pennsylvania provided the largest number of votes for war, and willingly and consistently supported its prosecution.

Book excerpt: This first study to discuss the important ideological role of the military in the early political life of the nation examines the relationship between revolutionary doctrine and the practical considerations of military planning before and after the American Revolution. Americans wanted and effective army, but they realized that by its very nature the military could destroy freedom as well as preserve it. The security of the new nation was not in dispute but the nature of republicanism itself. Originally published 1982. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Pennsylvania during the War of 1812 was far more active than one today might imagine. It pitted the United States against Great Britain and Canada (a British Colony) with their Native American allies and cost the lives of some 20,000 men. Infantry forces fought in Canada, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., and naval units battled on the Oceans, on the Great Lakes, and in and around New Orleans. Western Pennsylvania's contributions to the war were significant and this two-volume work studies the conflict from regional voices and news reports of the day. I Consider It My Duty examines the regional impact of the war through newspapers, magazines, books, letters, diaries, and other archives that survive. This two volume work studies that era from the voices of the day in Western Pennsylvania. Here you will find how people felt about the war. How people lived lives during this time and all of the anguish, heart-break, and fears are reported through the newspapers, magazines, books, letters, diaries, and various archives that survive today.I Consider also explores the Native American perspective in participating in the war, a conflict that threatened their nation and way of life. Great Britain was allied with the Native Americans to agitate against U.S. expansion into the Western Territories. Beyond being an important history, this book is an excellent reference for those folks looking into their Western Pennsylvania Genealogy, the book presents a detailed reference source for genealogists: including materials from various Pennsylvania Archives; local and State militia roll calls; and Federal Army units.Author Mark Painter spent years researching and creating this archive: a detailed recording in the words of the people who lived and suffered through it. The work includes rare, first-hand accounts of war atrocities and battle strategies in soldiers' diaries and military communications that helped define future military policy and planning. I Consider chronicles citizen pride in the young untested nation and public reaction to their nation at war. Witness American fear of the British and potential loss of new freedoms won a generation earlier in Revolutionary War. There are so many ways you can read this two-volume work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Army Historical Foundation Book Award During the War of 1812, state militias were intended to be the primary fighting force. Unfortunately, while militiamen showed willingness to fight, they were untrained, undisciplined, and ill-equipped. These raw volunteers had no muskets, and many did not know how to use the weapons once they had been issued. Though established by the Constitution, state militias found themselves wholly unprepared for war. The federal government was empowered to use these militias to "execute the laws of the Union, suppress insurrections, and repel invasions;" but in a system of divided responsibility, it was the states' job to appoint officers and to train the soldiers. Edward Skeen reveals states' responses to federal requests for troops and provides in-depth descriptions of the conditions, morale, and experiences of the militia in camp and in battle. Skeen documents the failures and successes of the militias, concluding that the key lay in strong leadership. He also explores public perception of the force, both before and after the war, and examines how the militias changed in response to their performance in the War of 1812. After that time, the federal government increasingly neglected the militias in favor of a regular professional army.

Book excerpt: The volume begins with biographical sketches of the First Purchasers, in which the author explains to what extent each man figured in Nantucket's British beginnings and gives an account of that pioneer's immediate family and the circumstances of his death. The First Purchasers included: Thomas Macy, Benjamin Coffin, Tristram Coffin, Edward Starbuck, Richard Swain, William Bunker, John Swain, Thomas Barnard, Robert Barnard, Christopher Hussey, Thomas Mayhew, Peter Coffin, Stephen Greenleaf, William Pile, Robert Pike, Tristram Coffin, Jr., James Coffin, Thomas Coleman, Nathaniel Starbuck, Thomas Look, and John Smith. Many of these founders were well acquainted with one another and, in a number of instances, were connected through intermarriage as well. These relationships are clearly established by Mr. Starbuck's genealogies, which trace the founders from their origins in England through four or five generations to the eve of the American Revolution and beyond.

From the midnight ride of Paul Revere to the cold winter at Valley Forge, American freedom was a right proudly won. This book investigates the important battles, speeches, and founding fathers of this important war that ended in the creation of a proud new nation.

Grodzinski’s volume in the Routledge Research Guides to American Military Studies covers the origins of the War of 1812 - the major post-revolutionary conflict fought between the United States and the British Empire - providing a general overview of the significant battles that occurred at sea and in the area of the present-day Great Lakes and U.S.-Canadian border. The key features of this research guide are the bibliographical elements, namely lists of published books, articles, and on-line resources pertaining to the War of 1812, as well as references to archival resources available in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. The War of 1812 is a valuable supplementary resource for institutional libraries on both sides of the Atlantic.
