Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welsh is the oldest surviving Celtic language, and the most flourishing. For around fifteen centuries Welsh poets have expressed an intense awareness of what it is like to be human in this part of the world in poems of extraordinary range and depth. And despite the global tendency towards homogenisation, Welsh poets have fought back, drawing inspiration from both the traditional and the contemporary to forge a new and rainbow-like modernism. This wide-ranging anthology of 20th-century Welsh-language poetry in English translation - by far the most comprehensive of its kind - will be a revelation for most readers. It will dispel the romantic images of Welsh poets as bards or druids and blow away any preconceived mists of Celtic twilight. This poetry is full of vitality, combining old craftsmanship and daring innovation, humour and angst, the oral and the literary. The selection brings together poets of every hue: from magisterial figures like T Gwynn Jones, R Williams Parry and Saunders Lewis to folk poets such as Alun Cilie and Dic Jones; from cerebral poets Pennar Davies and Bobi Jones to popular entertainers Geraint Løvgreen and Ifor ap Glyn. There are Chaplinesque poets, rebellious and subversive ones, lyrical voices and storytellers. The variety is enormous: from Welsh performance poetry to song lyrics; from the wry social comment of Grahame Davies to the contemporary parables of Gwyneth Lewis, who writes different kinds of poems in Welsh and English. This exuberant chorus of voices from the margins of Europe proves that poetry in this minority language is far from stagnant. Poetry Book Society Recommended Translation.

Book Synopsis A Bibliography of Welsh Literature in English Translation by : S. Rhian Reynolds
Download or read book A Bibliography of Welsh Literature in English Translation written by S. Rhian Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bibliography of Welsh Literature in English Translation is a groundbreaking volume that maps for the first time the translation history of Wales's two languages. This is also the first listing of Welsh-English literary translations and should be an indispensable tool not only for scholars but also for lay readers and for students of Celtic and Welsh literatures. As a resource that opens up for the first time one of the richest fields of translation in the British context, this bibliography is also a pioneering Welsh contribution to the burgeoning academic field of translation studies. The Centre for Research into the English Literature and Language of Wales (CREW), directed by Professor M. Wynn Thomas, received a prestitgious research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board for a one-year project in 2001 that was to culminate in a web-based database, an international conference and this published volume. S. Rhian Reynolds was employed as the postdoctoral research officer for the project, which grew far beyond the expected lifespan due to the wealth and quantity of the material uncovered. Translation practice has encompased the whole wealth of Welsh-language literature and among the thousands of translations recorded here are the acknowledged classics of European culture---The Mabinogion, the work of Dafydd ap Gwilym, the hymns of William Williams Pantycelyn and the plays, fiction, and political writings of Saunders Lewis. Ever since Welsh-English translation was first instigated in the eighteenth century it has provided an invaluable interface between Wales and the wider world (even non-anglophone cultures usually discover Welsh-language literature through the medium of English), between Wales and the other countries of the British Isles and (most importantly of all, perhaps) between the two cultures of Wales itself.

Download or read book Love from Wales written by Siân James and published by Learning Links. This book was released on 1991 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Who made an ache under my rib?'. Asks the poet on the first page of Love from Wales, and just what makes the Welsh a passionate race? This new selection of poetry and prose on the theme of love by Welsh poet Tony Curtis and novelist Sian James offers some lively answers. Love from Wales features extracts from novels and short stories, as well as complete poems and letters, ranging from the eleventh century to the present. The book includes many translations from the original Welsh. We begin in the Spring section, with the awkward adolescents of Dylan Thomas's Extraordinary Little Cough and Dannie Abse's Ash on a Young Man's Sleeve, then move towards the full Summer love of Gillian Clarke's Choughs who 'mate for life' and John Ormond's lovely poem to his wife, Design for a Quilt. Then it's onward to Autumn where love ripens into Alun Richards's The Scandalous Thoughts of Elmyra Mouth. Here we find Caradoc Evans's sly tale of a farmer's son sent off to market to find a wife akin to A Heifer Without Blemish. Finally, to Winter and Alun Lewis's poignant Post-script for Gweno, R.S. Thomas's stern Like That, and Vernon Watkin's moving Great Night Returning. Other writers featured include: Jean Earle, Gwyn Thomas, David Lloyd George, Richard Llewellyn, Emyr Humphreys, Jean Rhys, Idris Davies, John Tripp, and many more.
